Championship Match Reports 2006

      Senior County Championship - Final

South Kerry  0-12  ------------ Dr Crokes  1-8. (Played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 12th Nov 06)

In a game that never reached the heights expected we lost our second final in a row against the same opposition as last year. While South Kerry might have been the better team on the day we still could have at least salvaged a draw. I think the quality of the game suffered because both sides were anxious to keep the quality players as quiet as possible. This was achieved by both back room staffs within the rules but it contributed to a stop start game, full of bunching and a minimum of open football.

South Kerry started the brighter and went into an early lead. They also had a few wides early on which allowed us to be level at three points each at the end of the first quarter. As we had the strong breeze in our favour in this first thirty minutes it was imperative that we had a lead at half time. This objective we did not realise and went in at the break 0-6 to 0-5 in arrears.

We equalised with a James Fleming point in the 31st minute but an injury to Maurice Fitzgerald a few minutes later held up the game for nine minutes. (This injury looked very serious but thank God he was released from hospital on the following day.) South Kerry went a point ahead on the resumption of play but when Kieran O'Leary sent the ball to the net at the threequarter stage to put us ahead for the first time in the game we were very much in the driving seat.We should have added to our two point lead in the next few minutes but wasted a few good chances. Our opponents fought back and drew level by the 30th minute. There were  still nine minutes of injury time to be played and both sides had points during this period to leave the teams still with equal scores with time running out. A marvellous pointed free by Brian Sheehan put our opponents ahead once again but our lads attacked and forced a free. Agonisingly from forty yards out  into the breeze our effort sailed narrowly wide. Our best players on the day were Keith McMahon, Eanna Kavanagh, Eoin Brosnan, Ambrose O'Donovan, James Fleming and Kieran O'Leary.

Team and Scorers; Kieran Cremin, Keith McMahon, James Cahillane, Luke Quinn; Mike Moloney, Brian McMahon, Shane Doolan; Ambrose O'Donovan, Kieran Brosnan; Brian Looney 0-1, Andrew Kennelly, James Fleming 0-4(0-3frees), Kieran O'Leary 1-1, Eoin Brosnan, Colm Cooper 0-1(free);  Subs; Bat Moriarty, Eanna Kavanagh 0-1, Vince Cooper.

Final Score;   South Kerry  0-12  ------------ Dr Crokes  1-8.

Senior County Championship - Semi- Final (Played in Tralee on Sunday 22nd Oct 06)

              Dr Crokes 3-8 -------- Mid Kerry 1-9

One could say we were flattered to win by as much as five points but at the end of the day victory was achieved because we were not as wasteful as our opponents at scoring( they kicked twelve wides to our three). Our goalkeeper Kieran Cremin was also in top form , bringing off some fine saves.

Even though we had the wind at our backs in the first half the game was level, three points each at the end of the first quarter. Within the next five minutes Colm Cooper struck for two goals, the first a brilliant effort when closely marked and the other from the penalty spot.Despite this set back our opponents did not lie down but had their most productive five minutes of the game, adding on 1-2 to leave us just the minimum in front. The last few minutes of the half belonged to us with a trademark goal from Eoin Brosnan and a fisted point from James Fleming. This left us 3-4 to 1-5 ahead at the interval.

We had a point at the start of the second half but two minors from Sean O'Sullivan brought the lead down to four points. Scores for the next ten minutes were scarce , two unanswered Colm Cooper points putting us six in front. In the last ten minutes our opponents attacked strongly but managed just two points to our one. There was drama in injury time when Mid Kerry forced a penalty but failed to convert the last kick of the game.

While we welcome our hard earned win improvement will have to be forthcoming if we are to win the Bishop Moynihan Cup.

Quarter Final ---- Senior County Championship.

                   Dr Crokes  2-10 -------- Milltown/Castlemaine 2-6 -(Played in Tralee on Sunday 1st Oct 06).

This was a game the pundits expected us to win but our management saw it as a match that would not be easily won unless our lads stepped up on recent displays. The contest was very even for 45 minutes butour greater experience pulled us through in the end.

Even though they were playing against the strong wind our opponents started the better and were 1-2 up after five minutes. Our first score didn't come until the 11th minute but we had a tally of 1-5 before half time whereas the boys from Mid Kerry failed to add to their early score of 1-2. This left us 1-5 to 1-2 ahead at the interval but we had to play against the strong breeze in the second half.

Milltown settled the better after the throw in for the second half and within ten minutes had gone in front, scoring 1-1 without reply. We dominated the last twenty minutes and registered 1-5 to our opponents one point. The losers added on two points in injury time to leave us winners by four points.

The highlight scores for us were our two goals, the first from Kieran O'Leary when he rounded the goalkeeper and the other a trademark major from Eoin Brosnan after a good passing movement involving several players.

Dr Crokes 4-14 ----------- Kenmare 1-6 (Played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 18th June 2006)   Round 1 of County Championship.

In a game which we always dominated we ran out easy winners over Kenmare. Our management did not treat the challenge of Kenmare lightly as they had a proven track record over the last few years in the competition. In fairness they did not do themselves justice on the night and they also met up with an in form Colm Cooper who orchestrated almost every Crokes movement from the under 11 position.
