Hurling

County Hurling Champions

The hurlers captured the county intermediate title on Saturday last
the 29th of September in the Fitzgerald Stadium. In ideal weather
conditions on the resplendent surface of the stadium we defeated
Kilgarvan by 2-10 to 0-11 in a hugely entertaining and sporting game.
The foundation for this victory was laid down in the first quarter of
the game with Johnny Dunphy and Errol Tuohy scoring 2-3 to
Kilgarvan's solitary point. Even though Kilgarvan came more into the
game with a series of points further scores from Timmy Hourigan,
Seanie Morris and Ger Moroney gave us a half-time lead of 2-7 to 0-6.
The second half was played at a hectic pace and with fierce
determination by both sides with the result that scores were hard to
come by. Kilgarvan as expected piled on the pressure but our defence
stood firm with outstanding displays from John Cagney in goal, Gene o
Doherty, Gary Landers, Mick Buckley in the full back line while half
backs Seanie o Shea, Tom Clancy and Tim my Hourigan were equally
effective. At mid-field team Captain Larry Madden and the high
fielding Brian Darcy were magnificent through out the whole game. The
forwards got the scores when needed but also worked hard to close
down the opposition's defence whenever necessary. Even though
Kilgarvan outscored us by 0-5 to 0-3 in the second half our first
half dominance and tremendous defensive work ensured a great victory
for the hurlers. Afterwards, amid scenes of great joy and jubilation,
Willie O Connor P.R.O. of the County Board presented the cup to
inspirational captain Larry Madden.
