Dr Crokes 1-06 Clonakility 3-11(Played
Sat 17th Oct 2009)
LADIES
MUNSTER S/F
Dr Crokes 4-1 Liscannor 3-06 Dr Crokes
created history in Parteen in Limerick on Saturday
evening by becoming the first Ladies side from the
famous Killarney football club to reach a Munster club
final.
Dr Crokes
faced Clare Intermediate Champions Liscannor in the
Munster Junior Ladies Club semi-final and they continued
the good form that they displayed in their quarterfinal
victory over Moycarkey/Borris.
In fact,
they managed to match the 4-15 quarterfinal scoring
totals again this weekend in a powerful attacking
display.
The first
half was a very dogged affair and the side were level at
2-3 to 1-6 at the interval. Rheanne O’Shea scored the
Killarney’s side’s first half goal and the half time
words of Crokes’ joint managers Catherine Keogh and
James Fleming seemed to do the trick as Dr Crokes flew
out of the blocks early in the second half.
A swift
goal double by opportunist corner forward Marion
O’Callaghan settled the Crokes nerves and they went on
to completely dominate the second half. The team
flourished due to a defensive tour de force from the
likes of Katie Gleeson, Karina O’Leary, Edel O’Carroll
and Emma Galvin.
The inter
county duo of Mairead Finnegan and Cassandra Buckley
dominated midfield and the Crokes forwards were unerring
with Amanda Brosnan superb on the edge of the square.
The Kerry
side now go on to face Cork champions Clonakilty in the
Munster club final on the weekend of October 17/18. The
West Cork side had a facile landslide victory over
Dungarvan in the other Munster semi-final on Sunday.

Dr Crokes
4-15 Moycarkey/Borris 4-07 Dr Crokes qualified for a
Munster Junior Ladies club semi-final meeting with
Liscannor on October 3rd with a hard fought
quarterfinal victory in Mungret on Saturday afternoon.
Their opponents Moycarkey/Borris, contained four of the
Tipperary senior side who played against Kerry in this
year’s Munster senior championship semi-final. Maeve
Corcoran, Kelly Hackett, Maeve Hackett and Catriona
Walsh also played significant roles in this game but it
was the Killarney girls who prevailed thanks to a very
solid second half performance.
Dr Crokes
raced into an early lead thanks to an opening goal from
a penalty by senior inter county player Cassandra
Buckley and some good points by the returning Amanda
Brosnan, Laura Buckley and Rheanne O’Shea and the
inspirational Mairead Finnegan. A late three goal first
half salvo by the Tipperary girls however left the half
time score of 3-4 to 1-9 in favour of the Premier
champs.
Dr Crokes
however upped the ante in the second half and were
inspired by 2 goal heroine Joanne Spillane who moved up
to the attack. Amanda Brosnan fielded well on the edge
of the square and Finnegan, Buckley, Rheanne O’Shea and
14 year old substitute Jessica Edwards all combined well
to point Dr Crokes to victory.
The
Killarney club now face a difficult assignment against
Clare Intermediate champions Liscannor. In the other
semi-final Clonakilty face Dunngarvan also on the
weekend of October 3rd/4th.
Liscannor have a number of inter county senior players
like Olivia Lucas, Marie Considine and Carmel Considine
but the Crokes ladies who are jointly managed by
Catherine Keogh and James Fleming should be confident
that they are good enough to advance to the Munster
Final.
Dr Crokes:
Marie Cahillane, Karina O’Leary, Katie Gleeson, Edel
O’Carroll, Joanne Spillane (2-1), Caoimhe Willis, Emma
Galvin, Lyn Jones, Cassandra Buckley (1-0), Mags Cronin
(0-1), Mairead Finnegan (0-4), Laura Buckley (0-2),
Rheanne O’Shea (0-4), Amanda Brosnan (0-2), Maura
O’Callaghan (1-1) Subs: Edel Cronin, Kerry Beckett,
Jessica Edwards, Rebecca Galvin, Chloe Doherty, Aisling

Dr. Crokes 1-17 Kenmare/Sneem 2-05
For 30
minutes this game featured everything that is good about
ladies football in Kerry. Two fine sides met toe to toe
in battle on Friday evening 04/09/09 in front of large
and vocal support with some fine individual displays of
talent and endeavour. The setting was also superb. The
Dr Cokes top pitch was resplendent under the glare of
the floodlights and the silvery full moon.
The home
side shaded a tight first half and led by a solitary
point, 0-7 to 1-3, at the interval and everything seemed
set fair for a thrilling second half. Sneem/Kenmare
continued the form that saw them defeat pre tournament
favourites Scartaglin in the semi-final.
Opening
points by Laura O’Sullivan and Christina Foley after
five minutes handed the visitors an early two-point
cushion. The Crokes finally got a footing in the game
mainly through the surging runs of Mairead Finnegan who
was the game’s star player at centre forward. Finnegan
finished the contest with a personal tally of 11 points,
8 of which came from play. Gina Crowley did everything
in her power to curb Finnegan but there was no stopping
the inter county star who simply stamped her class all
over this final.
Finnegan
contributed six of the seven first half points after
full forward Marion O’Callaghan fired over the home
side’s opening score. Sneem/Kenmare however entered half
time buoyed by a first half goal from the penalty spot
by team Captain Michelle
O’Sullivan.
The second
half failed to live up to the opening 30 minutes as Dr
Crokes’ management made some key switches and Finnegan
continued to shoot point after point. Cassandra Buckley
dropped back to centre back and Caoimhe Willis and the
brilliant Lyn Jones took over in midfield, while Rheanne
O’Shea’s introduction added extra pace to the attack.
Four quick Finnegan points in succession followed an
opening Lynn Jones point as Crokes surged to a 5-point
lead after 40 minutes. Sneem/Kenmare continued to battle
bravely and a Laura O’Sullivan goal was some consolation
for their efforts but they will few complaints about the
overall result.
Dr Crokes
were worthy winners of the County Junior Final and will
now go on to represent Kerry in Munster. With former
inter county player Amanda Brosnan available for the
Munster campaign the Crokes outfit stand a very good
chance of competing well in the competition that is due
to commence next month.
