Munster Final 2006 Report

         Dr Crokes   2-5  ------- The Nire(Waterford)   0-8.

(Played in Pairc Ui Caoimh on Sunday December 10th 06)

Despite failing to register a score for nearly forty five minutes we still managed to graft out a three point victory over The Nire on Sunday the 10th December 06.It could be said that our opponents should have got something out of the game, having registered nine wides in the second half and still coming so close. I believe however that our greater experience carried us through and our heroic defending in the last quarter gave us victory and our third Munster Club title. This gives us more titles at present than any other club in the County.

We had the strong wind at our back in the first half and used it well in the first quarter, building up a 2-4 to 0-3 lead. The scores dried up for us after that and our opponents point in the 22nd minute left us seven points ahead at half time. In this thirty minutes we registered seven wides.Would this lead of ours be enough to carry the day?.

We just never got going in this second half. Even though it would be impossible to analyse why, I think it was a combination of our opponents carrying the game to us with great passion and our lads suffering the effects of a fifth competitive game in as many weeks. The Nire became dominant around the middle and even though guilty of several wides they had added on  five unanswered points by the 55th minute to leave us just two minors ahead. Colm Cooper who had scored two fine opportunist goals in the first half came up trumps once again with a point from a free from a very tight angle with a minute to go.This was the last score of the game and victory was ours by three points.

Even though we have scored ten goals in four County Championship games, eight in two O'Donoghue Cup games and four in two Munster Club Championship matches, the heroes in this contest were our defenders.Allied to this were our forwards great scores in the first quarter, our hard grafting at midfield and Eoin Brosnans great block down towards the end.
