Michael 'Coiney' O'Connor

He was the only member of our club to be elected Chairman of the Munster Council in March 1986. He was a a member of the Dr Crokes Seniors that won seven East Kerry Championships in a row '56-'62, he also represented Kerry at all levels, Minor, Junior (winning a Munster medal in '59) and Senior.  He also played Hurling for Killarney.  A great player he became an excellent administrator, first serving a decade as secretary of Dr Crokes, while he still was a senior player and then revitalising the Fitzgerald Stadium committee when he became secretary of same in 1965.  He was the driving force behind the development of the stadium now acknowledged as amongst the best in the country.  After GAA his other interest was Horse racing.

The unexpected and premature death of Michael O'Connor on May 7th 1991 robbed the GAA of one of it's greatest administrators.  We admire what he did at local level with Dr Crokes and Fitzgerald Stadium. He was highly respected at provincial and national level and seemed destined for the Presidency of the GAA until his maker called him home in 1991.
