Club Notes Week 7   18/02/2019

Weekly Notes 18th of February

All Ireland Club Semi Final

Played in Thurles on Saturday 16th of February

Dr Crokes 0-18 Mullinalaghta 2-7

The teams sized up one another in the first five minutes with Mullinalaghta having the first score of the game in the 2nd minute and we equalising three minutes later. We were rocked in the 6th minute when our opponents found the back of our net. We however sent over 4 points without reply before the end of the first quarter to go 0-6 to 1-1 ahead. Our Management would have been happy at this stage as we were playing into the stiff breeze. We however received  double blow to our chances when firstly the Longford boys were awarded a penalty which they clinically converted. As if this was not bad enough an even greater cause for us to worry came a minute later when one of our players was red carded. St Columbas added on a point a few minutes later to go two points ahead as we entered the final five minutes of the first half. In the remaining minutes we upped our game and outscored our opponents five points to one to leave us 0-11 to 2-3 in front at half time

One would normally be happy with a two-point interval lead and the wind at our back for the second half. These, however, were not normal circumstance as we would have to play the second half a man short. In the course of seven minutes we sent over five points in a row to go 0-16 to 2-4 ahead. Our opponents had two points with reply to reduce our lead to four points going into the last quarter. We had two points to our opponents one in the last 15 minutes to register a five-point win.

This game was won by u during two great periods of attacking the football. We sent over six points in seven minutes at the end of the first half and five points in the seven minutes after half time. We must not forget our good defensive play in the last quarter, especially that by Gavin White and Fionn Fitzgerald.

Team and Scorers: Shane Murphy, John Payne (Capt), Mike Moloney, David O'Leary, Gavin White, Shane Doolan, Johnny Buckley, Daithi Casey 0-2 (0-1 free), Micheal Burns 0-1, Gavin O'Shea 0-1, Brian Looney 0-1, David Shaw 0-3, Kieran O'Leary 0-4, Tony Brosnan 0-6 (0-2 free)

Subs: Michael Potts, Alan O'Sullivan, Colm Cooper, Eoin Brosnan, Jordan Kiely.

Great credit is due also to the small parish of Mullinalaghta who performed very well in the game and all through last year. The journey might be over for them just now but they could be back again next year.
