SENIOR FOOTBALL CO. LEAGUE - DIV. 1: Dr Crokes 2-11 St Michaels Foilmore 2-10. In a game in which we led all the way, we were lucky in the end to secure the 2 points. Our opponents who played second fiddle for forty five minutes put in a great last quarter and probably deserved a draw in the end. We were in front by 6 points going into this last fifteen minutes but failed to score in that period, while our opponents kicked 1-3 to leave the minimum between the teams at the final whistle. Its hard to know why we collapsed in this last quarter. Our opponents got on top in most sectors in this last period by some heroic defending near the end enabled us to secure the 2 points and retain our position at the top of the table as we get ready for round nine in two weeks time.In a game, in which we led all the way, we got off to a good start and established 6 points to 2 point lead by the end of the first quarter. Our opponents came more into the game at this stage and conceded only 1 point in the next fifteen minutes and scored 3 points themselves. This left us 7 points to 5 points in front at the end of the first half. We got off to a good start again in the second half, with a point by Chris Brady after three minutes and a very good goal by Andrew Kenneally two minutes later. This put us 6 points in front. The teams exchanged goals in the next five minutes, ours coming from a good effort by Mike Milner. In the next five minutes the teams exchanged points on two occasions to leave us 6 points ahead going into the fourth quarter. St Michaels Foilmore seemed to galvanise themselves for this remaining fifteen minutes. They put in a mighty effort as they saw the game slipping away from them. They scored 1-3 without reply but fell short by a point at the final whistle. The game was played in a very sporting manner and was well refereed by Paul Hayes. Our best on the night were Cilian Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy, Brian Looney, Chris Brady and Andrew Kenneally. Team and Scorers: Alan Kelly, Cilian Fitzgerald, Eoin Brosnan, David O' Leary, P.J. Lawlor, Shane Doolan, Aaron Murphy, Ambrose O' Donovan, Mike Milner 1-1, Alan O' Sullivan 0-1, Brian Looney 0-3, Shane Myers, Philip O' Connor, Andrew Kenneally 1-0, Chris Brady 0-6 (0-2 frees). Subs used Shane O' Neill.

FOOTBALL - U16: Our under 16 footballers have recently played two games in the County League. We played out an exciting draw against Austin Stacks at Lewis Road on 15th of July having been 6 points down with about 10 minutes left but the team showed great character to level the game and share the spoils with Stacks. We then made the long journey to Gallerus to play An Ghaeltacht on Friday 24th July and won this match by 11 points on a score of 4 -10 to 1-8. Our next game is against our local rivals Legion at Direen on Wednesday 29th of July.

LADIES CO. JUNIOR C'SHIP SEMI-FINAL: This semi-final clash of the two Black and Ambers served up an amazing game of Championship Football. Both teams gave it all in very warm conditions at Lewis Road. Stacks were first off the mark with a point in there first attack. Crokes continue to get a grip on the game in the opening half with 4 unanswered points from Rheanne O' Shea, Stacks mid-field got very much on top, especially Laura Rodgers causing a lot of problems for the Crokes defence, Stacks got a very good goal from one of these attacks. Crokes continue to pick off more points from the booth of Amanda Brosnan 2 and Edel Cronin. After 30 minutes of football, both teams went in level at half time, Dr Crokes 0-07 Austin Stacks 1-04. Crokes came out in the second half the more determined team with constant attacking football, with points from Megan Kiely and Rheanne O' Shea. They continued to pile on more pressure on Stacks with great runs by Siobhan Burns who popped up with 2 points and also been fouled for a penalty. Amanda Brosnan stepped up and put it away very cooly, to put Crokes in a very commanding 6 point lead with 10 minutes to go. Crokes defence were putting in a great performance in this second half as they kept Stacks down to 4 points in this second half. There was two outstanding saves from goalkeeper Mags Mc Cormack. Megan Brosnan finally had the last point for Crokes. The Killarney team held out some spirited attacks from the Tralee sides only for Dr Crokes to hold out for a great victory. Dr Crokes 1-13 Austin Stacks 1-08.

SENIOR HURLING: We played another round of Div 2, SHL this week. This time our game was against Kilgarvan at home on Friday evening. Our lads came up with with a very competent performance and ran out winners against an admittedly under strength Kilgarvan side on a score line of 2-09 to 0-06. This was a big improvement on recent displays and gives us hope that we can do well in the Intermediate Championship that will be coming down the track very soon. Our players were Jamie Lenihan, Kevin Landers, Michael Eoin Buckley, Rory Waters, Shane Kavanagh, John Ivory, Shane Lyne, Cian O'Brien, Michael O'Keeffe, Aaron Murphy, Paul Clarke, Sean Morris, Lorcan Howe, Brendan O Donovan, Dan Guerin, Sean Burchill. Our next fixtures will be arranged ASAP to get two outstanding "back games" completed. Those will complete our league programme and hopefully put us in good shape for the big challenges to come in the championship.

MINOR CO. C'SHIP - Rd 1: Kenmare District 0-10 Dr Crokes 1-14. This game, played at picturesque Fr Breen Park in Kenmare on Wednesday last, was fast moving and played at championship intensity. We won in the end by seven points because we were more consistent at scoring for three quarters of the game. The third quarter was dominated by the home team who managed to pull back our interval lead of eight points to just four, as we entered the last fifteen minutes. We go on top again in the last quarter and scored five points to our opponents two and register a seven point victory. We go off to a great start and had five points on board to our opponents one by the end of the first quarter. In the next five minutes we got through for two goal chances. Both fell to Paul Clarke. He was narrowly wide with his  shot at goal in the 21st minute but made no mistake a minute later, scoring a very good fisted major. Kenmare District had scored a point just before our goal but the game changing goal put us 1-5 to 0-2 in front. Before the end of the half we added on three points to our opponents one, to go in at the interval 1-8 to 0-3 in front. We played second fiddle to Kenmare in the third quarter. They got well on top around mid field. The teams exchanged points at the start of this second half. For the rest of this fifteen minutes it was all Kenmare. They got five points to our one, some of their scores of the top variety and kicked from distance. The deficit was now down to four points. We played very good football in the last quarter and knocked over five points to our opponents two in this fifteen points to register a seven point win 1-14 to 0-10. This was a very good team performance, David Naughton and Gavin White were outstanding in a defence that had no weaknesses. Four others to catch the eye on the night were Paul Clarke, David Shaw, Mike Casey and Billy Courtney. The quartet scored the 1-14 between them. The positive to take out of the game was that everyone of our players gave their all and especially in the last quarter when all games are won or lost. A negative was that we tried to convince the Referee on a number of occasions that he was erring in awarding scoreable frees to our opponents. The Referee rightly so brought the ball forward and made what might have been a difficult free into a very scoreable one. Our opponents scored six points from frees in the course of the hour. Team and Scorers: Tony Clifford, Brian Fitzgerald, David Naughton, Jack Lenihan, Michael Potts, Gavin White, Creagh Courtney, Paul Clarke 1-1, John Kerrisk, Jack Griffin, David Shaw 0-4, Mark O'Shea, Mike Casey 0-5, Billy Courtney 0-4, (0-3 frees, 0-1 45'), Dylan O' Sullivan. Subs used - Brendan Coppinger, Mark Hartnett, James Mc Auliffe. Adam O'Shea was unable to play because of illness.

U16 FOOTBALL: Our under 16 footballers have three games over the next few weeks starting with a home game against Austin Stacks on the 15th of July followed by two away games against An Ghaeltacht on 22th of July and then against Legion on 29th of July. We have already beaten Beaufort in this competition back in Mid June but have not played since that game.

U12 GIRLS FOOTBALL: Last Monday night saw the Dr Crokes girls under 12 team take to the field in the final of the Division 4 county final against Beaufort. Although this young team (16 of them are under age again next year) put in a great performance, it wasn't to be on the night as they where beaten on a scoreline of 2-9 to 2-3. Training will continue every Tuesday night from 5.30 to 6.30. Well done to Amanda Brosnan, Rheanne O'Shea, Megan Buckley and Harry O Neill who were part of the Kerry panel that defeated Cork in the Munster Final.

BEST WISHES: to Fionn Fitzgerald, Colm Cooper and Johnny Buckleyplaying with Kerry in the Munster Football Final replay in Killarney on Saturday.
