Dr Crokes Golden Era --------- 7 in a Row ----- 1956 to 1962 Year 1956 According to the Kerryman this was the best East Kerry Championship for many years. The game was played on October 28th in very bad weather conditions which made the pitch and ball slippery. This did not lower the standard of football which thrilled a good attendance. Crokes led from the start with a point by Murt O’Shea. He had a goal a few minutes later. Midway through the first half Dr Crokes goalkeeper Liam Carberry distinguished himself with a great save from a penalty by Paddy Culligan. At half time Crokes led by 1-1 to nil. Playing with the wind in the second half Dr Crokes had the better of the early exchanges when Murt O’Shea and Mick Galvin notched points. The Legion fought back and got good scores, a goal by Mickie Culloty and a point by Dan O’Keeffe. This left only 2 points between the teams, but try as the Legion might they could not get through a resolute Crokes defence who denied them any further scores and clinched a 1-3 to 1-1 victory. After the game the O’Donoghue Cup was presented by Jack O’Shea, Chairman of the East Kerry Board to Dr Crokes captain, Paddy “Bomber” O’Shea. This was the first in a seven in a row for the “Black and Amber”.
