O'Donoghue Cup Winners 1958

1958 -------------- Dr Crokes  0-14 ----------------- Legion  0-6

Dr Crokes retained their O’Donoghue Cup title for the third year in succession by beating Legion by eight points at the Fitzgerald Stadium.

The game which was played in atrocious weather conditions produced football of a high standard. It was indeed unexpected the Kerryman reported, to see such a high standard of football at this stage of the year when players are not usually fully fit; (the 1958 final was not played until April 1959).

It was superior fitness that enabled Dr Crokes to draw away from their opponents in the second half.

The Legion with the wind in their favour held their opponents to a draw at half time, but on the resumption, Dr Crokes piled on the pressure and never looked like being beaten as the game progressed to its predictable conclusion. The Legion nevertheless gave a highly creditable performance considering their youthful team.

Outstanding for Dr Crokes were Tadhgie Lyne who was playing great football, Michael O’Connor, Con Clifford and Jackie Looney.

Jimmy Redpath, Seanie O’Sullivan, Freddie Murphy and John Doody were best for Legion.

The game was refereed by James O’Donoghue, Chairman of the East Kerry Board who presented the Dr O’Donoghue memorial trophy to the winning captain, Michael O’Connor after the game.
