O'Donoghue Cup Winners 1959

1959    ------ Dr Crokes  0-9 ---------  Legion  0-6

 Dr Crokes won their 4^th O’Donoghue Cup title in a row by beating Legion in the final by 3 points. The game was played in atrocious underfoot conditions that caused many favourable scoring chances to be squandered by both sides. The Kerryman reported the game as follows;

“The game opened with the Legion pressing very strongly, but on a quick break through Noel O’Shea had the first score of the game, a point for Dr Crokes.From the kick out Legion swept upfield and Gerald O’Sullivan pointed from a free.Connie McCarthy restored Dr Crokes lead when he pointed in the 8^th minute. However the lead was short lived as Patsy Moynihan equalised almost immediately. Then the losers took the lead for the first time when Mickey Culloty raced through for a great point. This score was quickly negatived, however when Tadghie Lyne equalized at the other end. His shot was tipped over the bar by agile goalkeeper Weeshie Fogarty. Legion again took up the running and Gerald O’Sullivan pointed two frees. But Tadhgie Lyne and Connie McCarthy replied with similar scores, to leave the teams level 0-5 each at half time.

In the second half all four points for Dr Crokes were scored from frees by Tadhgie Lyne. Gerald O’Sullivan scored from a 21 yards free for Legion to leave the final score at 0-9 to 0-6 in favour of Dr Crokes.

Best for Dr Crokes were Tadhgie Lyne, Tadhgie Fleming, John McCarthy, Jackie Looney, Michael O’Connor, Con Clifford and Connie McCarthy.

Outstanding for Legion were goalkeeper Weeshie Fogarty, Robbie O’Brien, Mickie Culloty and Gerald O’Sullivan.

Scores for the winners were Tadhgie Lyne 0-6, Connie McCarthy 0-2, Noel O’Shea 0-1.The losers marksmen were Gerald O’Sullivan 0-4, Patsy Moynihan 0-1, Mickie Culloty 0-1”
