O'Donoghue Cup Winners 1961

1961 ------- Dr Crokes 6th in a Row

 Dr Crokes  2-9 -------------Legion  2-8

Once again it was a local Derby and here is the full account of the game as reported in The Kerryman.

“ Dr Crokes won the East Kerry title for the 6th year in succession when they beat old rivals Legion by 2-9 to 2-8 at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Although Crokes deserved to win, it was anyone’s game up to the last whistle. Both sides showed great dash and determination and the final was voted to be one of the best in the history of the competition.

From the throw in both teams put everything they had into the game. Crokes were first into their stride and points by Moynihan, O’Donoghue, Fleming, Griffin and a goal by O’Donoghue put them well ahead. Legion retaliated and before half time had points by O’Keeffe, Healy, O’Mahoney, O’Sullivan and a goal each by Fogarty and Healy. This left the interval score ------ Legion 2-4; Dr Crokes 1-4.

Crokes returned after making some vital switches. Ml O’Connor was moved to full forward and Paddy O’Shea to center half back. O’Shea steadied up the Crokes defence while up front O’Connor contributed enormously.

O’Connor put the Crokes on the winning trail midway through the second half with a goal and a point. But the Legion made a strong comeback and had points from Culloty, O’Keeffe, Healy and O’Sullivan. In the closing stages Fleming, McCarthy and O’Donoghue each sent over the bar to give Crokes victory.

Best for the winners were Con Clifford and Jackie Looney at midfield, Jim Counihan, Gerald Cullinane and Donal Lynch in defence and Connie McCarthy, Eamon O’Donoghue and Tadhg Fleming in attack.

The Legion had great stalwarts in Gerald O’Sullivan and Louis Nolan in defence, Noel O’Connor at midfield and Jimmie O’Mahony, Weeshie Fogarty, Dan O’Keeffe and Mickie Culloty in attack.

Scorers for Dr Crokes were Eamon O’Donoghue 1-2, Ml O’Connor 1-1, Tadhg Fleming 0-2, Patsy Moynihan 0-2, Johnnie Griffin and Connie McCarthy 0-1 each. The Legion marksmen were Johnnie Healy 1-2, Weeshie Fogarty 1-0, Dan O’Keeffe 0-2, Mick O’Sullivan 0-2, Jimmie O’Mahony and Mickie Culloty 0-1 each.

When presenting the cup to Jackie Looney, captain of the Dr Croke’s team, the Chairman of the East Kerry Board paid tribute to both teams for the sporting spirit of the play and the wonderful display given by both sides.”
