1968 ------ Dr Crokes win 10th Title in Thirteen Years Dr Crokes 4-3 ------------ Spa 0-11 Dr Crokes won their 10th O’Donoghue Cup in thirteen years by beating Spa 4-3 to 0-11 at Fitzgerald Stadium on Friday the 6th September. Crokes were fortunate that Tom Long was in sparkling form at full forward. He scored 2-1 and had a hand in his side’s two other goals. Eighteen minutes were gone in the first half before Long broke loose. He sent in a blazing shot which was parried by Jackie Foley the Spa goalie and Con Clifford was on the spot to punch to the net. From the kick out Long gathered and goaled and in less than a minute he had added a further point. This gave Crokes a half time superiority of 2-1 to 0-5. The second half followed much the same pattern with Spa scoring points and Tom Long coming back to bring their efforts crashing to the ground. He shrugged off two tackles before sending a blazing left footed shot to the net. Shortly after this Crokes were awarded a penalty and Con Clifford made no mistake with a rasping shot. Right through this second half Spa were keeping in touch with some fine point scoring. Crokes however made the issue safe with points towards the end from Patsy O’Connor and Fergus Moroney. Dr Crokes had a good defence with Paddy(Bomber)O’Shea and Mick Spillane cutting out many dangerous attacks. Con Clifford and Fergus Moroney were on top at midfield. Tom Long, Timmie Kelliher and Jackie Looney were the best in attack. For Spa Donie O’Sullivan was outstanding, covering off every position in the back line. Even though well policed by Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mick Gleeson had a very good game and notched 5 points.
