1982 ---------- Dr Crokes Retain Title Final; Dr Crokes 1-10 ------ Gneeveguilla 0-7 The Kerryman reported that “the six point winning margin does not tell the full story. Crokes were made to fight every inch of the way before gaining their second successive O’Donoghue Cup. It could have ended quite differently. With less than 5 minutes remaining Lady Luck donned her black and amber jersey and kept out what looked like a certain Gneeveguilla goal. It was a real pile driver from Neily O’Donovan which smacked off the post, bounced off the shoulder of goalkeeper Tom O’Driscoll, who knew very little about it and it was cleared upfield where Tom O’Shea got possession and scored a point to give Crokes a secure 4 point lead. Neily O’Donovan’s unsuccessfull effort ensured that Tom O’Driscoll’s magnificent record of not conceding a goal in two O’Donoghue Cup campaigns remained intact. Had the goal been scored the sides would have been level and any thing could have happened. While the six point winning margin might not have been a fair reflection, there was no doubt that Crokes deserved to win.” During the first quarter of the game, Croke supporters must have thought they were going to be destroyed. Although they were playing with a strong breeze they could not get out of their own half of the field. Gneeveguilla started superbly but they could not cope with the strong breeze and kicked nine wides in 25 minutes. Most of the good football early in the game came from the losers but they were still only level at a point each after 15 minutes; they had found it very hard to break down the Crokes defence in which Liam Hartnett and Noel Parker were especially good and the other four also did well, when the team was under pressure. John Casey and Noel Parker had points for Crokes after 16 minutes but they badly needed a goal and sure enough it came in the 26th minute. It was a real beauty. It stemmed from great defensive work by Donie O’Leary who made a superb interception and gave a perfect pass to Pa O’Donoghue. It went from O’Donoghue to Mike O’Grady to Tommy Parker and ended with Niall Brosnan slamming the ball past Paudie Hickey. Pa O’Donoghue added on a point to leave the Town team 1-4 to 0-1 ahead at half time. Gneeveguilla came roaring back in the second half. Tadhg Collins, Donal O’Connor and Michael Moynihan were doing well in the half back line and with Ambrose O’Donovan and Joe McCarthy winning possession around midfield they quickly added on three points. Pa O’Donoghue and TomO’Shea kicked two vital points to keep Crokes in front as Denis O’Donoghue and Brian Looney began to get on top at midfield. But Gneeveguilla kept plugging away and had minors from Tadhg McCarthy and Humphrey Moynihan to leave just 3 points between the sides. Then came that dramatic effort from Neily O’Donovan which could have swung the game Gneeveguilla’s way. Crokes fitness came good for them in the end and they added on 3 points for a six point win. The papers were lavish in their praise for referee Dan O’Sullivan(Currow) who had a very good game.
