O'Donoghue Cup Winners 1986

1986 ====== Dr Crokes Triumph –after replay with Gneeveguilla

-------        Drawn Game --- Gneeveguilla 1-9 ---- -- Dr Crokes 2-6

This was a very interesting final between the 1982 champions Dr Crokes and the 1983 winners Gneeveguilla. The Killarney men were favourites to win as they had reached the semi-final of the Senior County Championship going under to East Kerry in a replay.

Aided by the breeze Gneeveguilla dominated the first 23 minutes and were ahead 0-7to nil at this stage. Dr Crokes picked themselves up for the last 7 minutes scoring two points without reply to go in five points in arrears at the interval.

With the elements in their favour Dr Crokes were in the ascendancy after the break and when they drew level in the 47th minute, they looked home and dried. This set-back seemed to have ignited the Sliabh Luachra boys to greater effort and in the 53rd minute impressive corner forward Ger Looney punched home Joe McCarthy’s free for a capital goal and a three point lead. Time was running out for the Killarney men but in the dying minute of the game ace poacher Pat O’Shea popped up to clinically finish for a goal from an inch perfect pass via Connie O’Doherty and force a replay.

Replay;             Dr Crokes  0-11 ---------------- Gneeveguilla  0-7

The drawn game was acclaimed as one of the best O’Donoghue Cup finals for years and this replay was very little behind it in football excellence and excitement. Dr Crokes were quick to settle on this occasion and went ahead as early as the 28th second. It was tit for tat right through the half with the teams level 0-4 each by the 20th minute. The town boys finished the stronger before half-time and added on two points for an interval lead of 0-6 to 0-4.

Pat O’ Shea delicately chipped over a point on the resumption and even though Gneeveguilla gave their all, they were always at least three points in arrears throughout the second half. A point by Mike Buckley in the 58th minute gave Dr Crokes a four point victory.

The two goalkeepers had outstanding games. The local papers were fulsome in their praise for Man of the Match Dr Crokes John Galvin and Gneeveguilla’s Ambrose O’Donovan. Other stars for the Killarney men were Liam Hartnett, Aidan Kiely, Connie Murphy, Connie O’Doherty and Pat O’Shea while Gneeveguilla were also well served by Dan O’Keeffe, John Cronin, Sean Og O’Leary and Joe McCarthy.
