1992 -------- Dr Crokes beat Currow in outstanding Final.
Dr Crokes 0-15 ------- Currow 0-14 Dr Crokes captured the O’Donoghue Cup final in a sensational finish at the Fitzgerald Stadium. Eight points adrift at half time they fought back against a truly magnificent Currow side and shot the winning point in injury time. Ger O’Shea kicked 5 points in the last 9 minutes(4 from frees) to convert a 4 point deficit into a one point victory. But surely the equalising point from a 50 metre free out on the side line was the most significant of all. From the throw in it was complete Currow dominance and they were 5 points ahead after fifteen minutes. Crokes registered their first score in the 17th minute. Thoughts that this might spark off an avalanche of Croke scores did not materialise as Currow again went on the offensive and widened the gap 10 points to 1 by the 26th minute. The holders and All Ireland Champions added on two points to Currow’s one before half time but still had a mountain to climb as they were in arrears 11 points to 3 at the interval. Connie Murphy turned the game in Crokes favour when he moved to midfield. His surging runs through the middle gave Currow no option but to foul him and the accuracy of Ger O’Shea and Pat O’Shea punished them. A Currow point in the 46th minute(their last of the game) still left them 5 points ahead. A great interception by Crokes Custodian Peter O’Brien denied Timmy Brosnan a Certain goal. The same Timmy Brosnan intercepted a pinpoint pass from Pat O’Shea to Roland Neher which would surely have ended in a major. Connie O’Doherty narrowed the gap in the 51st minute. Ger O’Shea who had been relatively quiet up till now emerged as a Crokes hero slotting over 5 points for a one point win. It was heartbreaking for Currow in their first final in 48 years. The two teams contributed to a memorable game. For the quality of its football, excitement and outstanding scores this was arguably the best final in the 50 years history of the competition. Connie Murphy who won the man of the match award also created his own bit of history, as his father Liam captained a Crokes winning O’Donoghue Cup team in the sixties. They are the only father and son to have had the honour of lifting the trophy. The duel at midfield between Noel O’Leary and John Galvin(Connie Murphy in the second half) for Crokes and Mick Galwey and Timmy Brosnan for Currow was the highlight of the game. All five emerged with credit. Others to shine for Crokes were Peter O’Brien, Liam Hartnett, Ger O’Shea, Vince Casey, Roland Neher, Seanie and Pat O’Shea. Currow were also well served by Tim Galwey, Kerry O’Sullivan, Tommy Brosnan and Pa Dennehy.
