O'Donoghue Cup Winners 1995

1995 ------ Dr Crokes overcome Glenflesk

                              Dr Crokes  3-13 ------- Glenflesk  0-6

A classic was expected in this final between Glenflesk the 1994 champions and Dr Crokes, the four in a row winners from 1990 to 1993. The game turned out to be a very poor one especially for neutrals. The local papers had this to say about the game.”Glenflesk opened well but flattered only to deceive. Fans marvelled at vintage Croke football and those defence splitting inter linking moves which were finished with clinical precision. It was Crokes 3-6 to Glenflesk’s 0-2 at half time and the game was over as a contest.

Apart from these opening minutes when Glenflesk fought for their title they were reeling under co- ordinated waves of Croke pressure. County players Seamus Moynihan and John Crowley tried hard to stem the tide(both looked exhausted after a long season) but were continuously harassed and crowded out and the effectivness of the team was thus greatly reduced. The Dr Crokes defence was strong and balanced with the Coopers and Connie Murphy ever willing to attack. Peter O’Brien brought off some good saves. Vince Casey and Noel O’Leary were on top at midfield and best in the attack were Seanie O’Shea(he won the Man of the Match award), Roland Neher, Pat O’Shea and Mike Buckley(winning his 8th O’Donoghue Cup medal).

As mentioned already Seamus Moynihan and John Crowley who scored 5 points tried hard for Glenflesk. They got good support from Timmy O’Sullivan and Pat O’ Donoghue.  Their defence was overworked throughout as the opposing midfielders and half backs poured through. It was a game in which Glenflesk never rose to the heights they are capable of and Dr Crokes reached the standard of their All Ireland success”.

Semi Finals; Dr Crokes had a comprehensive victory over town rivals Legion. Peter O’Brien slammed in a first half penalty after Pat O’Shea was fouled in the square and that goal separated the sides at half time. With Noel O’Leary, Connie Murphy, Mike Cooper, youthful James Fleming and Mike Buckley starring Dr Crokes piled on the scores, despite the efforts of Cathal O’Grady, Donal Culloty and Denis O’Mahony. Crokes second half goals came from Roland Neher and James Fleming.

It wasn’t until the final ten minutes that Glenflesk pulled away from Gneeveguilla. John Crowley operating at full forward was very influential, scoring 5 points from play and earning several frees. Paud O’Donoghue scored 7 points. Gneeveguilla were only 2 points behind at half time but despite the best efforts of young Liam Murphy they could not wear down Glenflesk.
