O'Donoghue Cup Winners 2000

2000 ---- The Millenium O’Donoghue Cup

                   Dr Crokes  1-14  ------------ Gneeveguilla  0-11

The stage was set for a very interesting final between the County Senior Champions, Dr Crokes and the Junior kingpins, Gneeveguilla. Before a ball was kicked there was talk of giant killings and surprises but from the early minutes this never looked like materialising. While it wasn’t the most entertaining game of football, still some great scores were recorded by both sides. Crokes exuded great class while Gneeveguilla’s young team who are on a learning curve look to be a team for the future. In most of their games in 2000 Crokes were playing catch up but in this final they started like a team that meant business. This point was underlined in the opening minute when Vince Casey found Pat O’Shea in space and his quick transfer to David Moloney yielded a point. Fergus McAuliffe levelled matters minutes later from a free. Gneeveguilla must have been happy enough with their display in the early part of the game as against the breeze they were only 0-4 to 0-2 down after twenty minutes. Pat O’Shea put on a point in the 25th minute and then came the spell that virtually ended the game as a contest. In the last three minutes of the first half Crokes notched up 1-2, points by James Fleming and Vince Casey and a great goal by Pat O’Shea after good assists by Roland Neher and Mike Cooper to give them an interval lead of 1-8 to 0-4.

Vince Casey got Crokes off to a great start in the first minute of the second half extending their lead to eight points. Gneeveguilla began to pick up the pieces with bustling full forward Mike Finnegan firing over a free quickly followed by another score from a dead ball by Fergus McAuliffe. But any time Gneeveguilla tried to pull themselves back into the game Crokes firmly shut the door. On numerous occasions Gneeveguilla rallied only for the Killarney side to reply immediately. To be fair Gneeveguilla never came to terms with losing influential centreback John O’Donovan in the first half. Both sides went through the motions in the closing ten minutes with Gneeveguilla threatening the Crokes goal on a few occasions but to no avail.

Best for Crokes were Peter O’Brien, Vince Cooper, Danny Cooper and Eanna Kavanagh in defence. Vince Casey and David Moloney were on top at midfield and in attack Mike Cooper, James Fleming and Colm Cooper were the stars. For Gneeveguilla the best performers were John Cronin, Don Murphy, Sean Og O’Leary, Fergus McAuliffe and Liam Murphy.
