O'Donoghue Cup Winners 2002

2002 ------Dr Crokes annex 20th O’Donoghue Cup Title

                             Dr Crokes 0-10 -------- Rathmore 0-6

It was the unanimous opinion of the local sportswriters that Dr Crokes deservedly claimed their 20th O’Donoghue Cup title at the expense of Rathmore. The losers came into the game with high expectations but after missing a few early chances they seemed to lose confidence. Tom O’Sullivan and Shane O’Neill did well in defence but they struggled at midfield, although Michael D Cahill improved matters in this sector when moving out after half time. Up front the starting six forwards only scored 2 points from play, one of these coming when Michael D Cahill was at midfield and that tells its own story. In fairness to them they performed well below their full potential.

Dr Crokes on the other hand played solidly throughout. Donal Kavanagh, Danny Cooper and James Cahillane were excellent in defence. David Moloney and Eanna Kavanagh had the better of the midfield exchanges and up front Aidan O’Shea, James Fleming and Colm Cooper were always threatening. Best for Rathmore were Tom O’Sullivan, Shane O’Neill, Aidan O’Mahony and Michael D Cahill.

Scores were at a premium early on but Crokes had 3 points on the board before Jerry Murphy had Rathmore’s first score, a point in the 19th minute. The winners led by 5 points to 2 approaching the break and Rathmore might have had a penalty as the half came to a close. Instead Crokes broke downfield to go 6 points to 2 ahead at the break.

Rathmore pulled 2 points back on the resumption but Dr Crokes took control once again and were it not for some glaring misses the game would have been well beyond the reach of Rathmore. Instead when Michael D Cahill pointed in the 47th minute only 2 points separated the sides. Late points by Eanna Kavanagh and James Fleming secured the title for Dr Crokes.

Firies had been the giant killers of the Cup in 2002 with great wins over Currow and Legion. Even though they were comprehensively beaten by a Dr Crokes outfit who had reached the semi final of the Senior County Championship they did not play badly. To add to Firies woes their leader and County player Donal Daly played with an injury that curtailed his movements and he had to leave the field long before the end.

In the other semi final Rathmore had a hard earned victory over neighbours Gneeveguilla. The Rathmore scorers were Jerry Murphy 0-6, Michael O’Riordan 2-1, Aidan O’Mahony, Kenneth O’Keeffe and Michael O’Leary 0-1 each.
