April Reports 2006

26/04/06

Co. League: Div. 1. Dr. Crokes 1-09   St. Marys 0-07. On Sat. last we traveled to the capital of Iveragh for this tricky encounter and came home with a brace of points. The persistent rainfall throughout the game made the surface very greasy and players were having great difficulty maintaining their balance, these conditions undoubtedly contributed to the poor marksmanship of both sides. A combination of some tremendous goalkeeping by the St. Mary’s net minder and the width of the post kept our forwards at bay it was a penalty kick on the stroke of half time expertly tucked away by Shane Doolan which gave us a little breathing space at the interval when we went in leading 1-05 to 0-04. the second half was much the same pattern, we had a goal disallowed in the sixth minute for a square infringement and while we had the lions share of possession we could not put our opponents away. It was only in the last 5 minutes when 2 points from Kieran O’Leary put clear blue water between the sides. This game marked the return to Senior Football of Donal Kavanagh, and the  senior debut of Padraigh Sheehan. Our best player on the night was Ambrose O`Donovan. Team & Scorers, Kieran Cremin, Shane Doolan(1-0 pen.), Luke Quinn, Donal Kavanagh, Padraigh Sheehan, Brian McMahon (0-01), Eanna Kavanagh, Kieran Brosnan, Ambrose Donovan, Vince Cooper, Batt Moriarty James Fleming (capt.0-03), Kieran O’Leary (0-04), Edmund O`Sullivan(0-01), Andrew Kenneally, Subs who played Johnny O`Sullivan, Darren Coffey, Tomas Regan, Finian Moran.

E.K.J.L. Round 2: Gneevegulia 0 - 09 Dr. Crokes 0 – 07 this game played in wet slippery underfoot conditions was tightly contested throughout, and was in the balance until injury time. The game looked to be a slight victory for Dr. Crokes who were 2 points to the good with 5 minutes remaining but a combination of poor distribution and some efficient finishing by Gneevegulia got them past the winning post.

Dr. Crokes will feel aggravated with the result but will know that the game could have been put beyond doubt but for passing errors and near misses.

David Looney was outstanding, Brian Clarke played in every area of the field and was excellent. Rory O`Sullivan contributed with 5 points and worked tirelessly throughout, Andrew O’Connell & Johnny O`Sullivan foraged tirelessly, James Cahillane & Donal Kavanagh had tremendous games in defense. Our two corner backs Tommy Ryan & Colm Griffin played through the pain barrier. Panel: James Hurley, Colm Griffin, Donal Kavanagh, Tommy Ryan, Tommy Brosnan, James Cahillane, Darren Coffey, Andrew O’Connell, Johnny O`Sullivan,  Rory O`Sullivan Brian Clarke, David Looney, Mike O’Donoghue, Tomas Regan, Podge Lyne, Timmy Hourigan, Lawrence O’Callaghan, Donal Brosnan, Stephen O’Connor.

Juvenile Hurling:- County U12 League.

On Friday 21st the Dr Croke's under 12  hurlers  travelled to
Ballyduff to take on the local under team in their first match in the
county league. Played in good conditions and in a very sporting manner,
this game was in the melting pot until about   ten minutes from time, however
a combination  of a few good saves by the Ballyduff keeper and
the concession of  two quick goals by the Croke's  the game turned in favour of
Ballyduff and they eventually won this contest.
It was a close game  in the first half  and we got the first goal through Michael Burns.
At half - time Ballyduff were leading by  3 points however within minutes of the re-start ,
the Crokes captain , Aodain Burns  scored a nice goal to level matters.
It was touch and go for a while with some very exciting hurling from both sides
however in the end the goals by Ballyduff were decisive.
The team :-   C McSharry, D Healy, C O'Lionard,M O'Shea, J Lenihan,A Burns, L Byrnes, T Brosnan, M Burns, J Ivory, C Buckley, A Goggins.
Our next under 12 game  will be a home game versus Dingle on May 5th
and training continues   on Mondays and Fridays at 7.00pm.
Under 14 Hurling
The under 14 hurlers took to the field for their second game last Sunday, but had to concede to a stronger Rathmore side.  The Crokes boys played some stylish hurling, but the physical strength of the opposition was telling in the end.  Aodán Burns continued his scoring  trend.  Noticing the goal keeper off his line, Aodán curled the sliotar over his head and dipped it just beneath the bar for a terrific goal.  Graham Fleming, is proving a real star in goal and captain Kieran O'Donnell is showing his leadership qualities on the field.
Our next game is at home against neighbours, Kilcummin.  Training continues every Monday and Friday at 7 o'clock.

Co. League Div. 1 (Round 3) played Sat. April 15th Dr. Crokes 1-09 Kilcummin 0-12. (full report in Jackie Looneys colum)

E.K.J.L; Dr. Crokes 1-13  Rathmore 0-06 played in Lewis Road on Tues. 11/04/05 Dr. Crokes had a convincing win over Rathmore .The early exchanges were keenly contested with Dr. Crokes on top on 0-04 to 0-02 scoreline after 20 mins.C crokes began to assert control around the middle and were first to the breaking ball which gave the forwards adequate supply who went in at interval leading 0-07 to 0-03.the second half was all one way traffic with Dr. Crokes scoring 1-06 without reply in the first 25 mins. Rathmore`s scores in this half all came in the final minutes. Best for Dr. Crokes were James Cahillane, T.J.O`Sullivan, Donal Kavanagh and the outstanding Padraigh Sheehan in defence, Nicholas Murphy, Shane Horgan controlled midfied exchanges while up front Tomas (Bracker) Regan, Michael O`Donoghue & Brian Clarke stood out. Rathmore were best served by Patrick McCarthy and M.J.Kelliher.

Minor: Dr. Crokes 2-07 v K.O`Rahilly`s 1-17. Games between these 2 clubs in the last few years at both minor and U16 have been of the highest quality and this one was no different. It was a game that h)ad all the good things about Gaelic Football, with some tremendous high fielding, long kicking, and excellent point-taking. While the final score shows a deficit of 7 points it does not reflect the true story as 1-02 of O`Rahilly`s final tally came in the final two minutes. There is no doubt that they deserved their victory as they were far superior all through in virtually all areas of the pitch but tremendous credit is due to our lads despite conceding a height and weight advantage to a well prepared side they never gave up trying and had the lead whittled down to a mere two points entering the final minutes.Team: Alan Kelly, Fionn Fitzgerald, Diarmuid O`Donovan, Gavin Tucker, Jonathan Clarke, Ian Howard, David O`Leary, Michael Moloney, John Bartlett, Philip O`Connor, Ruairi Mangan, Denis Galvin,

Daithi Casey, Johnny Buckley, Jamie Doolan. Dr. Crokes best player Gavin Tucker.

Lotto: There was no winner of the Jackpot drawn on Mon. April 17th. Nos. drawn were 1, 7, 19, 24. Match 3 30 x€20. (full list in Lotto results section\ Jackpot Sun. next €10,200.

Coiste Na Og:

U16 East Kerry League Final played on Mon. 17th in Lewis Road we had a convincing win against a highly rated Legion team on a 1-14 to - 0-10 score line and brought the first and hopefully much silver ware to the club this season. Legion had the better of the early exchanges  and had a 3 point lead 0-7 to 0-04 after twenty minutes but 3 points from the trusty left leg of Alex O`Sullivan brought parity at the interval. The second half we played champagne football dominating in all areas of the field and snuffing out any threat our opponents posed. In a team of 15 heroes Jonathan Clarke, Fionn Fitzgerald, Kieran O`Sullivan in defense Eoin Clifton & Daithi Casey in midfield and in the forward line Alex O`Sullivan, Niall O`Connell, T.J.Cronin & Shane O`Neill were exceptional. It was unfortunate that the influential David O`Leary missed the game through injury.

Team: David Neeson, Joseph Keogh, Jonathan Clarke, Kieran Ward, P.J.Lawlor, Fionn |Fitzgerald(C), Kieran O`Sullivan, Daithi Casey, Eoin Clifton, T.J.Cronin, Niall O`Connell Alex O`Sullivan, Shane O`Neill, Mark O`Donoghue, Cian Buckley.  After the the game Paudie Breen Chairman East Kerry Coiste na Og presented the cup to Captain Fionn Fitzgerald.

U14: backboned by most of last years under 12`s Dr. Crokes u14`s felt the pressure in this years u`4 game v Rathmore on Wed. 12th. The much stronger Rathmore side won

4-07 to 1-03. however despite the result their was much to be admire in yet another gutsy display by the lads. Panel; Paul Clifford, Iggy Curtin, Gordan Buckley, Conor Fitzgerald, Cillian Fitzgerald, Chris Brady, Mark Egan, Robert Watson, Anthony Keogh, Brian O`Shea, Anthony Cronin, Conor McGill, Derek Maye, Chris Lawlor, Cian O`Neill, David Healy, Brian Murphy, David Leacy, Michael Quirke, Gavin Corbett, Neilly McEntaggart, Sean Lavery, Dara O`Keeffe, Brian Murphy.

Another major milestone for Dr Crokes was met last Friday when the first ever under 14 hurling team took to the field in the County League.  The progression from indoor hurling to under 12 two years ago was a significant step.  Last year we fielded an under 13 team in the South Kerry League and now this year, Dr Crokes are fielding an under 14 team with many of the same players who broke new frontiers in 2004.

It took some time for the Crokes team to settle into this game and Kilgarvan took advantage by putting up some good scores.  However, even though we were in defence mode a lot of the time, old stalwarts in the backs played outstanding.  Senan Lavery put in a “man of the match” performance and cleaned up everything that came his way.  Graham Fleming saved shot after shot and cleared balls out the field.  Captain, Kieran O’Donnell lead his team by example and played some stylish hurling.  Jonathan Cleary on the full back line was solid as ever and Ignatius Curtain has improved his game immeasurably this year.

The second half was a different game and the Crokes boys came into their own.  Brian O’Shea, who was now playing mid-field, drove long ball after long ball into the forwards.  It was not long before Aodán Burns took the honour of taking the first score for a Crokes under 14 team.  For good measure he banged in a terrific goal to the top right corner a few minutes later.  Cousin Matthew Moynihan took over the scoring with a good point from out the field.  Alex Goggin fought hard in attack and was unlucky to see some of his best efforts just slip wide.  Cian Mc Dermott only started playing with the Club this year and is a prospect for the future.  He fitted in well and played some great hurling.  Last, but by no means least, Anthony Keogh worked dogged hard throughout the game and went long solo runs before providing ammunition to his forwards.

All in all it was a good display for their first outing.  The second half display was very encouraging and the team are looking forward to their next game with Rathmore on Sunday 23rd April.  Training for under 12 and under 14 continues every Monday and Friday at 7.00pm.

Foireann: Graham Fleming, Sean Lavery, Jonathan Cleary, Ignatius Curtain, Kieran O’Donnell (capt.), Anthony Keogh, Aodán Burns, Brian O’Shea, Cian Mc Dermott, Alex Goggin, Matthew Moynihan.

Dr Crokes under 10 hurlers were selected to demonstrate the new hurling go-game at half time during the recent Kerry v Dublin game.  They played against a team from Kenmare and Kilgarvan.  It was a great experience for these young hurlers to play in front of such a large crowd in Fitzgerald Stadium and should give them a longing for more in the years to come.  County Officers praised the level of skills demonstrated by the Crokes lads in a game that was free-flowing and exciting.  The large crowd saw some spirited tackling and well-taken scores.  Those who lined out for the Dr Crokes team were, Michael Owen Buckley, Mark Buckley, Micheál Burns, Billy Courtney, Cillian Fleming, John Ivory, Jack Lenihan, Conor Mc Sharry, Gavin White, Oscar O'Connor and Sylvie Hartnett.
Training for the Under 12 and Under 14 hurling teams continues every Monday and Friday night.
Dr. Crokes defeated Spa in round 2 of East Kerry U16 League played in Spa on Mon. April 10th on 2-12 to 3-07 scoreline. This was nip and tuck all the way to the finish. Spa started the better but a brilliant goal from Daithi Casey 10 minutes from the break was the tonic Dr. Crokes needed. The teams were level at the interval on 2-3 to 1-06 scoreline. In a titanic second half a goal from Timmy O`Donoghue  ensured victory for Dr. Crokes. Fionn Fitzgerald was outstanding all through in defense ably assisted by Joseph Keogh & Kieran Ward while T.J.Cronin was the pick of the forwards

12/04/06

Minors: We were defeated by a strong Spa side on Fri. last in the minor co. league on a 1-11 to 0-10 scoreline. Spa were well worthy of their 4 point success on the night being hungrier throughout the field and first to the ball all through. We missed too many chances taking the wrong options on numerous occasions. This game changed complection on 2 rather dubious  decisions. A Spa goal on the stroke of half-time when a blatant push on the back went totally un-punished and a perfect  legitimate goal by Ruairi Mangan  for Dr. Crokes within 5 minutes of the re-start which was disallowed for an alleged square – ball where even fair minded neutrals admitted the player was well outside. These are the type of calls which frustrate players and drive supporters into rage.

Team: Alan Kelly, Jonathan Clarke, John Bartlett, Diarmuid O`Donovan, Michael McMahon, Michael Moloney, Gavin Tucker (0-02), Ian Howard, Johnny  Buckley (0-01), Philip O`Connor, David O`Leary, Daithi Casey (0-02), Denis Galvin, Ruairi Mangan (0-01) Jamie Doolan.(0-04) Sub. Fionn Fitzgerald.  Best for Dr. Crokes were John Bartlett, Gavin Tucker & sub. Fionn Fitzgerald, in defense Ian Howard strove manfully at midfield while up front only Daithi Casey & Jamie Doolan posed  a threat.

Hurlers: Dr Crokes 1-06  Banteer 0-16, South Kerry / Duhallow League. On a sunny Saturday evening in Killarney, Dr.Crokes hurlers had their first competitive start of the year against Banteer in the new South Kerry / Duhallow League. With six of last years first team regulars unavailable it was a chance for some of the new and younger players to lay down an early marker.

Crokes started slowly and were trailing by 4 points after ten minutes. Barry O’Grady soon open their account on the twelfth with a well struck long range free. Banteer replied quickly but O’Grady had Crokes back within one score on the twentieth minute with another superbly taken free. Crokes were beginning to settle and Shane Kavanagh was beginning to take control of the midfield area with some masterful fielding. Jim Kennedy added a point from play but two easy frees late in the first half allowed Banteer stretch their lead. John O’Hallaron, who had been a torn in the side of the Banteer defence all evening, saw his shot sublimely saved on the stroke of half time and the teams when in 0-7 to 0-3 in favour of Banteer.

The second half started much like the first, Banteer were fast out of the traps with 6 unanswered points in the opening ten minutes. Crokes again began to find their feet with points from Kennedy and O’Halloran but Banteer hit back with two of their own. Fergal Clarke chipped in with a point of his own from corner forward and was unlucky not to have a goal soon afterwards only for a dubious referee’s decision. Crokes were not to be denied a goal with Kennedy soloing brilliantly through the Banteer defence before firing the sliothar past the helpless keeper. Banteer had time of one more point and the game finished up 0-16 to 1-6 in favour of the Duhallow men.
