29/04/09 EAST KERRY U21 FINAL Dr. Crokes 1-09 Rathmore 1-10 we relinquished our U21 title by the minimum margin in Rathmore on Saturday last. This game was lost in the opening period when we did not perform. Our opponents adapted better to the rain sodden conditions and a comfortable lead at the break 1-06 to 0-02. We upped the tempo in the second period and fought back level 1 - 09 apiece in the 29th minute but a highly dubious refereeing decision awarding a free in the final seconds gave our opponents the opportunity to snatch the winner. EAST KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE The junior team got their campaign back on track in round 3 of the EKL with a runaway win over Rathmore at home, running up a 6-12 to 1-5 score. All players showed well for the ball with great enthusiasm and they were rewarded with an avalanche of scores. The selectors opted for a very young but speedy full forward line of Keith O Leary, Shane O Neill and Denis Galvin. This trio in particular worked like beavers and produced Dr Crokes style of football at its best. O’Leary scored 3 goals, while Galvin ( 2) and substitute Tommy Regan also found the net. The fast ball in from David Moloney paved the way for the scoring spree. Midfield was solid throughout and there was no way past the rock solid defence. Buddy O Leary was a revelation especially in that first half when Rathmore threatened At half time Crokes led 2-7 to 1-4. Youthful Keith O Leary opened the scoring flood gates a the start of the second half as they piled on the scores for a clearcut victory. Subsequent rounds of this competition continue on Tuesday evenings at 7.30 pm. MINOR CO. LEAGUE St. Michael's/Foilmore 3-13 Dr. Crokes 2-14. We made the long trek to South Kerry last Friday night to play our final game in the County League and what a game it turned out to be. Played on a very heavy pitch, the home team had the first four points before Chris Brady opened our account with a point after 12 minutes. Playing into a strong breeze, scores were hard to come by but we got a life-line before half-time when Conor O' Neill was brought down for a penalty. Up stepped Chris Brady, who converted brilliantly to leave the scores at half-time 1-9 to 1-5 in favour of the local team. We got the worst possible start to the second half, when the home side goaled and indeed it looked very bleak for us. But, to the credit of this side, they battled back and got the deficit back to a one point game with fifteen minutes left. St. Michael's/Foilmore goaled again and raced into a five point lead but once again the lads rallied and Cian O' Neill scored a great goal to leave two points between the sides. It was tit for tat for the final minutes, but the home side ran out victorious by two points. All in all, a great match and to their credit, the lads never gave up and at times played some marvellous football. All is not lost though, as we still qualify for the semi-final stages of the competition, most likely to be played this Friday night. Scorers on the night were Chris Brady 1-8, Cian O' Neill 1-1, Timmy O' Donoghue 0-2, Kieran Ward 0-1, Keith O' Leary 0-1, Gordon Buckley 0-1.

U12 hurling Dr. Crokes 4-5 Dingle 1-2 Having played in 3 series of Blitz games over the past 3 weeks, we finally began to find our form in our South Kerry semi-final win at home to Dingle on last Friday evening 24th April. In ideal weather conditions and perfect playing pitch in Crokes, we really showed a significant improvement in our earlier games. This was an overall excellent team performance and it was great to see the whole panel of 22 players contributing. We are certainly improving from playing games and we are all learning as a few positional changes are working well and the most important thing is that we are all enjoying the experience. Our defence was very solid with Michael Owen Buckley, Gavin White and Mark O Shea excelling ,our mid-field pairing of Jack Lenihan and Jack Murphy put in a great effort all through with Jack L contributing 1-5 (from frees) and Jack M also finding the net (1-0). Up front, Daniel O Brien ,at centre forward, scored 2 crucial goals and was ably assisted by Oscar O Connor, James McAuliffe and Billy Courtney. Overall, we showed great heart and will to win and hopefully we can continue our improvement for next Friday's night final with Kenmare/Kilgarvan. While the result might suggest an easy victory for Dr. Crokes in this derby clash against Spa it was far from that. With 10 minutes remaining, the sides were level 0-14 to 1-11 but Crokes finished in a flurry scoring 1-05 without reply. The opening half was keenly contested with the early initiative by the visitors, and led after 20 minutes 0-07 to 0-03 Niall O`Mahony`s with 3 Michael O’Donoghue with (2) and Cormac Cronin (2). Crokes gradually got back into the game and points by Daithi Casey, Jamie Doolan, Kieran O’Leary (2) and Colm Cooper brought parity at the break 0-08 apiece. On the resumption Crokes started the brighter and had four unanswered points from Casey, Cooper, Johnny Buckley, K O’Leary to lead 0-12 to 0-8 after 10 mins. Cooper playing the role of provider. Points from C. Cronin and Conor Gleeson for Spa were answered by further points from Cooper and Brian Looney to leave the score after 16mins 0-14 to 0-10. A Spa goal in the 19th min followed a pointed free by C. Cronin in the 20th left the sides level. Crokes stormed up field and following a typical passing movement Brian Looney finished to the net further by points from James Fleming Cooper, Jamie Doolan Kieran O’Leary (2) who finished with a personal tally of six points put the issue beyond doubt. E.K.J.L. Dr Crokes junior squad disappointed at home in round 2 of the EKL recently, where they were beaten 2-9 to 1-8 by Currow. This was a surprise following on their splendid display in the opening round, when they overwhelmed Kilcummin. They were missing 3 of the panel, but there were sufficient players available, many of whom have aspirations for the senior team. It didn’t happen for them in this game. John O`Shea squad will be hoping to return to their winning ways in future rounds and make it to the qualifying stages. Currow deserved to win this game, exposing the Crokes rear guard for two first half goals, which determined the result. David Neeson in the Crokes goal wasn’t given the cover he deserved, and could not be faulted for retrieving the O Neills on two occasions. John Bartlett and the tigerish Tommy Ryan tried hardest to stem the Currow tide, but even when they broke up the Currow attacks, they lacked team support to turn defence in to attack. This malaise infected the sextet of forwards; so often in this game players did not engage properly and did not provide suitable options for the player in possession. David Maloney had a great hour at midfield. The forwards disappointed. Shane O Neill, and Denis Galvin kept their end up very well, but the rest failed to ignite in this game. They can bounce back and make the qualifiers, by upping the performance on successive Tuesday evenings. Fixtures……The next two games are…….April 28 away to Glenflesk, and May 5th home to Spa. COISTE NA OG our under 12 black team got their county league off to winning ways last Saturday with a home win against Na Gaeil on a score line of 2-10 to 0.03.
This was a solid start
to the campaign for this talented bunch of players. Although they
had a slow and tentative start they soon got into their stride and
went in at half-time leading 2-03 to 0.02.The second half went all
Dr. Crokes way with a final winning score of 2.10 to 0.03.This was a
good solid performance with the defence very much on top and some
well worked scores up front. They will have a much Our U12 hurlers travelled to Kilgarvan to take on the local team in this U12 game. Played in windy conditions on a fantastic hurling pitch this game provided a stern test for our lads. We were missing five of our usual team and this was a chance for other players to prove their ability and they were not found wanting. The opening 10/15 minutes were brisk with both defences on top and we were leading by a point coming up to half time when finally our defence was breached and we conceded a goal to be 2 points down at the break. The second half started with the concession of an early goal, but it was after this that our lads really showed their worth. Every player put in a great effort and following a goal from young Michael Lenihan and a few points from his brother Jack we were set for a titanic last five minutes. Some heroic defending by Gavin White, Dan O'Brien and Adrian Murphy kept the opposition at bay. Cian O'Hare, Alan O'Doherty and Anthony Murphy offered sound defensive support to our keepers, Michael Lenihan and James McAuliffe. Further outfield Billy Courtney, Paul Clarke, Oscar O'Connor, Dara O'Hare and Mark Hartnett triedall they knew to good effect. In the end we lost by three points but there was a lot of positives to be taken from this game a s we now prepare for the semi-final next Friday evening . Team :- M Lenihan, C O'Hare Doherty, D'Brien, A O'Doherty, R Lynch, G White, A Murphy, Jack Lenihan, Paul Clarke, M Hartnett, B Courtney, D O'Hare Doherty, J McAuliffe, A Murphy, O O'Connor TRIP TO TIPP On Sunday April 19th our U12 and U14 hurlers and their coaches travelled to Lattin-Cullen in Tipperary and then onto Thurles for the Tipp V Limerick NHL game. This was a perfect day with great weather and good experiences for 37 juveniles and 8 of their coaches. We started with 11am mass in Lattin where we were acknowledged and applauded by the congregation and afterwards we had a very interesting training session with the local juveniles and their coaches. This session was exciting and fruitful and lots of new friends were made. We then had an U12 and an U14 match with the local lads and this was followed by some refreshments provided by our hosts. We then headed to Thurles for the inter county match which offered our juveniles a chance to see some quick and skilfull hurling at the top level. We met a lot of the players from both teams and got photos and autographs. All in all it was a great day. Special thanks to Sean Browne of Jades Bar for insuring that a photo of the Dr Crokes U12 team appeared in the match programme and Sean also supplied a complimentry programme for all the juveniles. Thanks to Kieran Crehan and Timmy Hourigan for organising this with the Lattin-Cullen coaches and a special thank you to all our juveniles for being so well behaved all day ...true ambassadors for their club. Go raibh maith agaibh go leir. EASTER CAMP held last week was an overwhelming success with the large crowd of kids thoroughly enjoying themselves. The second half proved to be a much tougher task but the team responded well and played with a great tempo. We ran out winners on a score line of 3-08 to 1-07. This victory sees us qualify for s/finals with a game remaining. Team 1 were next in action they started poorly but rallied against the wind, we trailed at the interval and had some good chances to win eventually losing 6-04 to 5-02. FEILE Na Gaeil Saturday April 18th Fossa 3pm Dr. Crokes v Ardfert. EAST KERRY U16 FINAL Dr. Crokes 1-10 Kilcummin 2-08 in the final played in Farranfore on Monday 13 we lost agonisingly by the minimum margin. Crokes were three points down at half-time and quickly brought the game back level. But a quick goal followed by a point saw our boys in arrears again. However, our boys fought back again and dominated the second half. But several opportunities to tie the game were let slip by. The under 16 team were by far the better team on the day and deserved this victory. If they maintain their current drive and dedication, there are bigger fish to be landed this year. While this was a tremendous team performance best on the night for Dr. Crokes were Senan Lavery, Jason Lyne and Mark Egan in defence Cillian Fitzgerald and Chris Lawlor at midfield while in the attack Bryan O`Shea Anthony Cronin and Derrick Maye tried hardest. U12 Hurling Dr Crokes U12 hurlers hosted and participated in the second blitz on Friday evening which was ideal for hurling. Our first games against Kenmare/Kilgarvan was very competitive and close with both sides playing open and fast hurling. Jack Lenihan lead the way for Crokes from midfield and he got some fine points from play and placed balls. He was ably assisted by Daniel O'Brien Michael Owen Buckley and Gavin White. Despite a great team effort we lost in the end by one point . In our second game against Dingle our lads showed a great work rate and backed each other up very well. Thanks to goals by Jack Lenihan and Oscar O'Connor we were ahead at the interval. In the second half it was nip and tuck and our lads put in a great effort. Mark O'Shea and Billy Courtney were to the fore however in the end we lost out by a goal. This team shows great potential and are improving all the time and the future is bright for them. Former Tipperary All Ireland winner and All star gave a very good training session to our juvenile hurlers last Saturday. The session was very well attended despite the inclement weather and Nicky did not disappoint. He gave freely of his time, experience and he really encouraged our hurlers. This was a great learning experience for both coaches and players and it was warmly appreciated by all present. Sessions like this will improve the skill levels and promote enthusiasm amongst the players and it gives us all an insight into skills and speed required for the best field game in the world. SENIOR CO. LEAGUE round 2 v Spa we have a home venue for local derby game on Saturday April 18 @ 7pm. 08/04/09 SENIOR CO. LEAGUE DR. Crokes 1-15 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-07. We opened our 2009 Co. league campaign with a comprehensive win. In the opening half we totally dominated proceedings and led at the break 1-10 to 0-02. strong at the back and lording proceedings at midfield our forward line were in tremendous form and none more so than the genius that is Colm Cooper who in a four minute spell ended this game as a contest with 1-03, the goal expertly finished from an acute angle. On the resumption we seemed to take the foot of the pedal for a period and left our opponents back into the game but points from O’Leary and Cooper put the game in safe keeping. Team Alan Kelly John Payne Michael Moloney Luke Quinn Batt Moriarty James Cahillane (0-01), Shane Doolan, James Fleming (0-01), Daithi Casey Brian Looney(0-02) Kieran O’Leary (0-03) Colm Cooper (1-05) Jamie Doolan (0-01) Subs; Ambrose O’Donovan, David Moloney, Shane Myers, Fionn Fitzgerald. MINOR CO. LEAGUE Dr. Crokes 3-06 Rathmore 1-11. As the score line suggests, this game went down to almost the last kick of the game. This was a truly great game, played in wet conditions. Goals win games and that was the case here. The first came from Conor Fitzgerald and the second came from a brilliant piece of teamwork, with Alex O' Sullivan finishing a truly great move. However, we trailed at half time by 1-1 to 2-1. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the second half, we really played some great football, but it must be said that Rathmore played their part in this being a great spectacle. The major turning point was our third goal scored again by Alex O' Sullivan. The sides were level with time almost up but up stepped Timmy O' Donoghue to ensure a great win. Team: James Barry, Chris Lawlor, Sean Coppinger, Iggy Curtain, Gordon Buckley, Kieran Ward(Capt.), Joseph Keogh, Conor O' Neill, Keith O' Leary, Conor McGill, Bryan O' Shea, Conor Fitzgerald, Cian O' Neill, Timmy O' Donoghue, Alex O' Sullivan, Stephen Clifford, Neilly McEntaggart, Mark Egan, Michael Beckett, Senan Lavery. U 12 HURLING Dr Crokes participated in this first round of games in the U12 hurling blitz on a wet and cold evening at our home pitch. This was the first in a series of three blitzes and it provided us a chance to get warmed up for the South Kerry league in May. In our first game we played against Duagh and after a good start we always held the upper hand. James McAuliffe got an early goal and once Jack Lenihan added on two fine points we settled into a nice pace . Further goals from Oscar O'Connor, Jack Murphy, Mark O'Shea and Jack Lenihan put a fine look on the scoreboard and gave us good confidence for the second and final game. In ths second game we played Kenmare/Kilgarvan and this was a very tight affair. There was some good skillful hurling on show from both sides and thanks to a fine goal from Gavin White matters were level with about three minutes to go . In the end K/K got the decisive point to deny our brave lads a deserved draw. We had a good team performance and the leaders included Daniel O'Brien, Mark O'Shea, Jack Lenihan, Oscar O'Connor and Jack Murphy.
