O Sullivan Cup  Dr. Crokes 3-07 Scartaglin 1-4

Played in ideal condition we began brightly with some well taken points and were 4 points to 0 up when we got the first of our 3 goals through Brain Clarke, who rolled back the years with an excellent display of unselfish work and intelligent running to allow Daithi Casey and David Looney take some well worked scores. With Brian O Donoghue in excellent form in the defense and Captain Kevin Landers winning ball around the half back line the ever running Ian Howard creating havoc the result of this game was beginning to take shape late into the first half and all 3 goals gave us a lead that we were to keep until the end of the game.

Scartaglin to their credit kept fighting away and were rewarded with a penalty late in the game which was expertly dispatched  into the net giving David Neeson little chance, although David pulled off a fabulous save early in the first half to deny this spirited Scartaglin team a goal.

Overall the result was pleasing and further tests await.

Coiste na Og:U11 11aside blitz. On Sat. last we traveled to Farranfore to partake in the U11 Blitz hosted by Firies club. In the previous years we contested 2 finals in this competition winning one. We were drawn in a group with Firies and Ballymac, in the opening game we played Firies and with the games being duration of 10mins aside we started slowly in the opening half and were well behind in the half time, we upped our performance in the second period and had narrowed the gap to a point at full time. In the second group game against Ballymac further improvement meant we qualified for the q/final where our opponents were Kilcummin which we won with plenty to spare. Firies were our opponents in the s/final and the lads responded fantastically to every thing our opponents threw at us and ran out deserving winners. For a team who started so slowly we were now in the final and our opponents were Fossa who qualified from the other side of the draw we led at the break 2-02 to 1-01, Fossa got a quick goal on the resumption to reduce the deficit but our lads upped their performance once again to run out comfortable winners. 15 players every game under the conditions of this 11aside. Joint Captains Darren O’Doherty and Shane Lyne lifted the cup for the second time in three years. Panel: D. Healy, J. O’Leary, C. Regan, C. Courtney, G. White, D.O`Sullivan, McDara de Willis, J.O`Sullivan, D. O’Doherty, J. Kiely, S. Lyne, M. Casey, J. Kerrisk, M. O`Shea, C. Mangan. Congratulations to all concerned and a special word of thanks to Firies club for their hospitality on the day.

Intermediate Hurling Championship: Kenmare 3-12  Dr Crokes 2-10 (after extra time)Played on a miserable wet night in Kenmare on Tuesday 24th July, Dr Crokes hurlers made their exit from this year’s Intermediate Championship but only after a very gallant and spirited effort. Both teams made this a very exciting game for spectators. The Kenmare pitch was in great order and while the Crokes were missing their inspirational midfielder Frank Synnot (married during week), Mike Murphy, Dave Hannon, Adrian Brennan, John Ryan and John Bradley through injury, the team raised their game and could easily have won this evenly matched contest if they converted their supremacy in play to scores in the first half which ended with Kenmare leading by the point on a score of 1-4 to 0-6 with the crucial score coming from a sideline cut when Crokes keeper Denis McCarthy was unsighted by a dipping shot. It was goals at crucial times in the match that won it for Kenmare.

Crokes back were in control in that first half with John Bergin, Tom Murphy and Barry O Grady sweeping up all the play in the half back line. In fact Barry O Grady played his best game for Crokes in the number 7 jersey and was an inspiration to the rest of the team. Keith Curtin and Kevin Landers held their own in a great tussle at midfield.  Point by Jim Kennedy (4 frees) and two excellent efforts from Seanie Morris and John Bergin on the run from his half back line made sure Crokes stayed well in touch.

On the resumption Crokes started where they left off again driving forward from the back line and were first to score through a Seanie Morris point. for Kenmare to leave 3 points between the sides. The teams exchanged scores with Jim Kennedy knocking over 2 more points. Crokes had introduced Patrick Landers and Fergal Clarke at this stage and with Brian Darcy more to the fore at centre forward Crokes drove forward in the latter stages of the half. They were duly rewarded when nearly on the stroke of full time Patrick Landers drove home after panic in the Kenmare goalmouth.  Normal time was 1-9 a piece

Extra time was played even the light was fading fast.

Both teams continued where the left off with tremendous efforts and no mean skill.

Kenmare edged the first period and were again rewarded with a near post goal. Crokes did not score is this 10 minutes period as Kenmare led 2-10 to 1-9.

Crokes lifted themselves in the second period and had some bad misses with definitely two goal chances going a begging. Then disaster struck for Crokes. What should have been a score for Crokes at one end, finished with a goal for Kenmare at the other end, leaving 7 points between the sides. Crokes responded immediately with a great point from Keith Curtin and the same player saw his free finished to the net after the Kenmare defence failed to deal with it. With 3 point between the sides and Crokes pressing the vital score did not materialise and Kenmare had 2 frees to finish off the scoring at 3-12 to 2-10. a score line that flattered Kenmare.

On the night it was a great team effort from Crokes. Bar the side line cut Denis McCarthy played well and marshalled his defence. Paul Griffin, Gary Landers and Shane Kavanagh were always to the fore in the full back line. The half back line as mentioned drove forward at every opportunity. Midfield held their own. While our forwards did miss scoring chances they were never faulted for effort with Jim Kennedy, Brian Darcy and Seanie Morris excelling at times.

It was a great team effort and one ponders at what might have been with a full side.

Team manager John Lenihan and selectors Brendan Keogh, Dave Cotter, Pat Kennelly and Gene Doherty were proud of their charges.

Crokes have one game left this year, the South Kerry Final against either Kenmare or Kilgarvan.

Team: Denis McCarthy, Paul Griffin, Gary Landers, Shane Kavanagh, John Bergin, Tom Murphy, Barry O Grady, Keith Curtin, Kevin Landers, Tim Hourigan, Brian Darcy, Jim Kennedy (Capt), Mike O Keeffe, Johnny Dunphy, Seanie Morris.

Subs: Patrick Landers for Tim Hourigan, Fergal Clarke for Mike O Keeffe.

John Bradley, Brendan Keogh, Dave Cotter.

Best of luck to Kenmare in the semi-final.
