O`SULLIVAN CUP DR. CROKES 2-14 SCARTAGLIN 2-05 The junior team advanced to the semi-final of the O`Sullivan Cup by defeating Scartaglin 2-14 to 2-5 away on August 18th. A second half that yielded 1-10 for Dr Crokes put plenty daylight between the sides, but it was far from vintage football by the winners. We started smartly with a second minute point, but conceded the first of two converted penalties as early as the 4th minute.

Dr Crokes best player on the evening was Kieran Brosnan ,who gave us a distinct advantage at midfield. He sped through the Scartaglin defence in the 14th minute, using route one and crashed home a splendid goal, very much akin to what his older brother, Eoin did on so many occasions for club and county.

We were 5 points clear at the interval. Gavin Tucker, Denis Galvin and Ruairi Mangan added on the points to win pulling up.

The piece de resistance of the second half was a superb strike for a spectacular goal by team captain, David O Leary. It was the best strike this writer has seen for many a day and deserved a bigger stage with camera recording. It had all the hallmarks of that wonderful shot by Seamus Darby in 1982 (without the nudge ). The screamer from the right wing left the Scartaglin keeper grasping only at air.

In defence P J Lawlor and Kieran Ward impressed. David Neeson could not be faulted for the well struck penalties.

An early ankle injury to Barra O Connell unhinged the team for a while, but it quickly regained its composure.

A big win, but this is only a case of work in progress before the O Sullivan Cup can be won.

COISTE NA OG Our u13 campaign began with a win in Kenmare followed by wins against Glenlesk, Legion, Kilcumin and Gneevguilla this saw us make the final v Firies who were unbeaten in  group 2.

We started a bit sluggish and kicked a lot of wides and at halftime the teams were level 4 pts each, a good talking too and some positional switches saw us play much better in 2nd half the passing was quicker and our kicking accuracy returned we ran out convincing winners 3-15 v 0-6.

We would like to thank Listry for making us welcome on the night and also thank the match officials, all our u13 squad were excellent this season they are a credit too the club and there families.

Mentors James Lyne, Ger O`Shea and Seamie Doc would like too thank parents who drove to the various games, and for all our loyal supporters a special thanks. Following our mega success in winning u14 East Kerry championship it was nice to add u13  championship in the same year...

Well done too all involved over the season.

HURLING – Our National Sport & part of Our Heritage

Hurling, considered perhaps the fiercest and fastest of all team games, is the national game of Ireland and truly unique and exciting.

When the Celts came to Ireland as the last Ice Age was receding, they brought with them a unique culture, their own language, music, script and unique pastimes. One of these pastimes was a game now called hurling.

It features in Irish folklore to illustrate the deeds of heroic mystical figures such as Cuchulainn and it is chronicled as a distinct Irish sport for at least 3,000 years.

It is fitting then that as part of Heritage Week Muckross Traditional Farms are hosting the first ever Hurling game on their new pitch.

The game is an U-8 exhibition game between Dr. Crokes & Kenmare. This will take place next Saturday August 29 at 1.00 p.m. in Muckross Traditional Farms. Some well known Inter-County Players and Sports Personalities will attend so please come along and support this and experience for yourself “The Old Days and The Old Ways” with a visit to Muckross Traditional Farms and see the “Clash of the Ash” by some young Cuchulainns from Killarney and Kenmare.

An ideal opportunity to support all things Irish.

Entrance via Muckross Traditional Farms reception building in Muckross House Car Park.

Reduced Admission as part of Heritage Week.

Family €3.00, Adults €1.00, Children .50c

CO. LEAGUE DIV. 1 Laune Rangers 1-06 Dr.Crokes. 0-12 played in Killorglin on Saturday Aug. 15 we maintained our un-beaten record in this years league with a victory over the home side.

EAST KERRY MINOR LEAGUE  Rathmore 1-16    Dr. Crokes 2-16

We bounced back after last weeks defeat to Legion, to beat Rathmore in Rathbeg to book a place in the League final.  The two goals were scored in the first half, the first by Alex O' Sullivan and the second by Conor Fitzgerald.  We led at half time by 2-8 to 1-4.  To be fair, Rathmore battled all the way but our lads just held on to reach the final, where our opponents will be Kilcummin.  Best on the night were Sean Coppinger, Brian O' Shea, Cian O' Neill, Alex O' Sullivan and Keith O' Leary.

MOLYNEAUX CUP Dr.Crokes 0-10 K. O`Rahilly`s 3-04 the concession of soft goals proved to be our downfall in B championship clash played on Friday August 14.

COISTE NA OG U15 Co C'Ship qtr final --- Dr Crokes V Lixnaw.. Played on a good evening for hurling in an immaculate Dr Crokes pitch, this game was full of skill and honest effort. Lixnaw showed that they had taken no summer break from their hurling and their lifting and striking skills were very good. On the Crokes side we had some very skilful players but not enough of them . However this rustiness was compensated for to a large degree by hard work and good effort.

Lixnaw got down to business quickly and had five points on the board before Aodhan Burns opened the Crokes account. While Crokes defence was under severe pressure, they held out strongly and Alex Goggins was superd in goals. While Crokes did concede points the opposition were finding it hard to get goals. This was down to Miceál O'Shea, John Ivory and Michael Casey in the full back line. Further afield Shane Hanafin David O'Connor and Aarom Murphy worked hard.

At half time we were nine points down. Some positional switches at the break worked and brought Crokes back into it. A goal from Aodhan Burns after a pass from Ivan Hurley was followed by a brace of points from David O'Connor. While these scores restored pride the game was effectively over. To their credit Crokes kept working away and inspired by David O'Connor who worked tirelessly and some good forward work by Laurence Byrnes who got a fine goal the match ended on the score of 3-20 to 2-05.

Lixnaw were fully desrving of their victory, however this Crokes team has potential for the future and with some more hurling under their belts and a full squad available there will be better days. Team :- A Goggins, M Casey,M O'Shea,J Ivory,K Flynn,G Coughlan,S Hanafin, D O'Connor(0-04) L Byrnes,(1-0),A Murphy, A Burns(1-01),CO'Donoghue,L Howe, Ml O'Shea,J Billow, I Hurley.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Dr Crokes  1-7 Kilmoyley0-13

Playing at home on Sun 2nd Aug, Dr Crokes hurlers made their exit in this years Co. Intermediate Hurling Championship at the hands of a strong Kilmoyley outfit that included players who lined out with Kerry last year and who also won Co Senior hurling medals in 2009.

It was very disappointing for Crokes as Crokes also lost to the same opposition in the Co League Div 2 final in recent weeks. Crokes put in a tremendous hours work but did not put enough scores on the board and just came up short.

The rain throughout the match made it difficult for both sides and Crokes playing with a slight breeze took the game to their opponents but found score hard to come by. Brian O Sullivan Darcy and Keith Curtin were in control at midfield and the defence were held a tight reign on the Kilmoley forwards forcing them in to shooting errors.

Crokes had a goal disallowed when Billy O Dea shot to the net after a great run through the Kilmoyley defence but the referee called play back for a free which was pointed by Mike O Keffee, who added another shortly afterwards. Kilmoyley added a point from a free and after a tough 15 mins Croked led 2 pts to 1.  Crokes where then hindered by a nasty head injury received by Brian Darcy who in fielding the ball received a heavy blow to the head resulting in the metal protective bar causing a nasty wound over his eye. The referee saw fit to take no action but Brian had to leave the field for 10 mins for running repairs. It certainly upset Crokes even though blood sub Mike Murphy performed well in his absence at wing back. Keith Curtin from play and a Kilmoyley point saw Croked lead at half time by a point (0-3 to 0-2).

Crokes were first to score though an excellent Diarmuid Lane point but then Kilmoyley scored 5 points including 2 frees to go into a 2 point lead after 13 mins of the half. Keith Curtin and Mike O Keeffe pointed frees and and Kilmoyley replied with a free of their own to maintain their 2 pts lead. It was nip and tuck until Diarmuid Lane scored a great individual goal, collecting th eball on the 50 yd line he soloed past 3 Kilmoyley defenders to blast an unstoppable shot to the roof of the Kilmoyley net. This should have been the catalyst for Crokes to win the match but a few dubious frees pt Kilmoyley back in the driving seat. Crokes while piling on the pressure had their chances but were only rewarded with a hard worked Darren O Dea point. Kilmoyley closed the scoring with yet another free and ran out winners on the score line of 0-13 to 1-7.

While it was disappointing for Crokes, the players and mentors can be proud of their performance. Timmy Hourigan was very solid in goals. The full back line of Shane Kavanagh, Brendan O Donovan and Tom Murphy repelled many Kilmoyley attacks.

Barry O Grady and Kevin Landers (until he retired injured) played well on the wings and soon to be married David Coughlan put in a great second half catching great ball under pressure. Mike Murphy played very solidly when introduced as a blood sub and then for Kevin Landers. Brian Darcy displayed all of Crokes battling qualities and while incurring that bad facial injury hurled right to the final whistle. Keith Curtin while marking Kilmoyley’s best player put in a solid hours work and scored 2 pts in the process. While all the forwards had their moments and battled hard Diarmuid Lane, Billy and Darren O Dea  were the pick of the sextet. They were ably assisted by Mike O Keefe who scored 3 good frees, Sean Burchill, Patrick Landers and sub Johnny Dunphy.

Team & Scorers:

Timmy Hourigan, Shane Kavanagh, Brendan O Donovan, Tom Murphy, Barry O Grady, David Coughlan, Kevin Landers, Brian O Sullivan Darcy, Keith Curtin (0-2) Sean Burchill, Patrick Landers, Diarmuid Lane (1-1), Mike o Keeffe (0-3), Darren o Dea (0-1), Billy O Dea

Subs: Mike Murphy, Johnny Dunphy, Liam Bergin, James Linehan, Ger Fogarty, Evan O Donoghue

U21 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Tarbert 1-05   Dr Crokes 5-25 We made the long journey to Tarbert on Thursday last and  as the score-line suggests this was all too easy and there will be much stiffer opposition along the way.

EAST KERRY MINOR LEAGUE Dr Crokes 2-12  Legion 1-10  As stated before, this team are improving with every game. We had a great start, scoring the first 3 points from Chris Brady, Keith O Leary and Robert Watson. The lads were working very hard all over the pitch and there were some great passages of play. We led at half time by 0-7 to 0-3.

Once again we started the second half as we did the first and at one stage we led by 6 points. The Legion then hit a purple patch and with ten minutes left, led by one point. Then the true character of this team kicked in and goals by Dylan O` Neill and the industrious Alex O` Sullivan sealed the issue.  All in all a terrific performance.

SCOR Coiste Scor Chiarrai is celebrating this by having a 40th Anniversary Concert in the Malton Hotel, Killarney on the 15th of August at 8.30pm.  There will be an abundance of talent on show, with past and present participants and winners taking part on the night.  Sean Kelly will be Fear a ti for the night and is sure to run it with his usual style and flair.

BEST WISHES to Con Casey and Benny O`Connor who are currently indisposed.
