20/12/06 O’Donoghue Cup: Dr. Crokes 3-06 Kilcummin 2-06 Sun. last brought the curtains down on the 2006 playing season when we lifted another East Kerry Championship our 22nd in total against Kilcummin. In a keenly contested game the foundation of our victory was undoubtedly our first half display when we played some magnificent football which was a delight to witness culminating with three superb goals. The first came in the 10th minute following a tremendous passing movement Andrew Kenneally was on hand to blast low and hard to corner, unfortunately in that passage of play he was injured and had to be replaced. Kieran O’Leary scored the second when put in possession by the Gooch and the Gooch himself expertly finished to the net for the third following good approach work from Eoin Brosnan and the unselfish Brian Looney who drew the defensive cover. Leading at the interval by seven points 3-05 to 1-04 one felt that it would be sufficient in the knowledge that our opponents would lift their game considerably in the second period and while we repeated the recent worrying trend of failing to score in the second half from play our defense as a unit was once again rock solid. It is a credit to the management and the players for both their physical and mental condition considering that this was their 11th game in 12 weeks away in excess for any amateur. Captain James Fleming emulated his father Tadhg in lifting the coveted O’Donoghue Cup, and in doing so became the third Dr. Croke father & son combination following in the footsteps of the Murphy’s Liam & Connie, and O`Shea`s Paddy & Aidan. 13/12/06 Munster Club Final; Dr. Crokes 2-05 The Nire 0-08. to say we were lucky would be an understatement. In those final pulsating minutes many of our supporters heartbeats were reaching dangerous levels. It took a magical last minute pointed free from the corner by Colm Cooper to finally lift the siege and give us our third Munster Club title, our first in 15 years. We opened the scoring in the first minute when along sideline ball from James Fleming was fumbled by a Nire defender and the Gooch was in hand to expertly tuck it away. Points from Andrew Kenneally & Kieran O’Leary left us in the lead 1-02 to 0-02 after 10 mins and when Colm finished to the net in the 11th. minute following a sweeping movement involving Kieran O’Leary, Andrew Kenneally, and Brian Looney followed by another brace of points courtesy of Kieran O’Leary & Eanna Kavanagh in the 14th minute we led at this juncture 2-04 to 0-02. this proved to be our last score for a considerable period of time as the Nire came thundering into the game and frustrated our every effort with their wholehearted no nonsense approach. For many years it has been Dr. Crokes forwards who got us out of tricky situations with their ability to carve out openings but on this occasion it was the disciplined defending of our backs as a unit which was our mainstay ably assisted by Eoin Brosnan who in those final moments made two massive match defining interventions. It was a very proud Captain James Fleming who received the Michael O’Connor Cup (former Dr. Crokes stalwart) and in a wide ranging acceptance speech which has been highly commended upon he was wholesome in his praise of all those associated with this victory. The players, management, and club officers would like to specially thank the large crowd of followers who traveled and sincerely thank them for their overwhelming vocal support. 06/12/06 O’Donoghue Cup: Dr. Crokes 3-09 Gneevegulia 2-08. we qualified for yet another O’Donoghue Cup final with a hard fought 4 point victory over a gallant Gneevegulia side. Played at Fitzgerald Stadium on perfect underfoot conditions the strong blustery wind at times made it extremely difficult. We opened the scoring in the first minute when a wind aided long delivery from Brian McMahon bounced over the bar further points from Colm Cooper and James Fleming(f) put us three points to the good inside the opening 5 minutes, while enjoying plenty of possession we were unable to press home our advantage mainly due to vagaries of the wind and the tenacity of the Gneevegulia defense. A well worked Gneevegulia goal in the 11th minute that put in the lead by a point was the wake call we needed and the response was immediate when Gooch pounced on a loose ball to finish to the net, scores were still at a premium until Brian Looney finished to the net in the 21st minute. Further points from Gooch one from the penalty spot which he uncharacteristically blasted over the bar in the 28th minute left us leading at the break on 2-06 to 1-02. Playing with aid of the elements in the second half Gneevegulia immediately showed they meant business when a “45” finished in the net with goalkeeper Kieran Cremin appeared to be unsighted. When our opponents narrowed the gap to two points after 12 minutes an upset looked on the cards as we were unable to penetrate their defense and it was not until the 18th minute when we had our opening score of the half a point by Gooch, Kieran O’Leary then stretched the lead to 4 with an excellent effort and in the 22nd minute Eanna Kavanagh finished to the net after good work by O’Leary which gave us some breathing space, O’Leary again completed our scoring in the 26th with an another long range effort. Gneevegulia continued to drive forward and had three unanswered points in the remaining minutes to narrow the gap. While never reaching the heights of the previous weekends display it was nonetheless a workmanlike performance. Team: Kieran Cremin, Keith McMahon, Luke Quinn, Michael Moloney, Batt Moriarty, Brian McMahon, (0-1), Eanna Kavanagh (1-00), Kieran Brosnan, Ambrose O’Donovan, Brian Looney (1-00), Nicholas Murphy, James Fleming (0-01), Kieran O’Leary (0-02), Eoin Brosnan, Colm Cooper (1-05).
