Sympathy: We were all stunned on the morning of the 15th February  when news filtered through of the untimely death of Con Clifford. Con gave lifetime of service to the Black & Amber winning the first of his 10 O’Donoghue Cup medals in 1956, being captain in 1962.  He also won 2 Munster medals with Kerry, Minor 1957, Junior 1961. When his playing day ended he continued to serve the club in an administrative capacity, he was  Chairman in 1972&1973. When the Club Book “Crokes Gaelic Century” was published in 1986 Con had researched and written a number of the articles.

Coming from a family with a long and proud involvement with Dr. Crokes from it’s foundation in 1886 his grandson Risteard is the 6th generation of the family to wear the club colours.

A squash enthusiast for many years he was the  winner of the Squash award at the inaugural Killarney Sports Stars Awards

Recently retired as an ambulance driver his latest passion was golf and he was eagerly looking forward to testing his skills on the green sward of the Kerry Courses with our golf society.

To his wife Eileen, Sons Richard & Con, Daughters Annette & Lynda, grandchildren, brother Richard, relatives & friends we offer our sincere condolences.

Hurler of the Year

The Hurler of the year is none other than a Waterford man Tom Murphy. Tom a native of
Lismore. an industrial engineer came to “Beauty’s Home” in 1999 to work as
Production Manager in Killarney Plastics.

He joined Dr Crokes in 2000. A defender, he played with a very successful underage Lismore team that won U10, U12, U14, U16, minor and U21 Waterford County Championships. He also holds All Ireland medals at primary school level and with Lismore CBS.
Unfortunately a very promising career was interrupted when he severed his
cruciate ligament which sidelined him for a year.  On moving to Killarney he
thought this would be the end of his career but on persuasion he readily committed himself to Dr. Crokes. He has been a regular on our team since his arrival and was part of the County Intermediate winning team in 2001 when Dr. Crokes defeated Kilgarvan.

Having played at centre back that year he unfortunately missed the final due to a broken collarbone.

His commitment to the club was highlighted when he went straight from the plane on arriving home from his honeymoon to play a starring role at corner back in our County
League Div II win over Kilmoyley in 2004, which went to extra time.

He played quiet superbly this year when moved to centre back even when those around him were flagging and winning was not attainable. His tenacity,  positional sense and natural left handed striking marks him out as a special player.

A genial man who needs no motivation and whose attendance at training and efforts on the field of play are exemplary,

Tom at 32 years age has many more years to give to the Dr Crokes
A most deserving winner of the Player of the Year award, may we wish him and his lovely wife Elaine every best wishes for the future.

Enda Ward Named as Supporter of the Year. The affable  Garda from Athlone has been named as Supporter of the Year 2005. Enda a former player with the club has been an avid supporter of Dr. Crokes since arriving in Killarney in 1976. Transferred to “Heavens Reflects” all of 30 years ago Enda has also served in Abbeyfeale, Castleisland, Ardfert, & presently in Beaufort.

Married to Killarney girl Celine(nee Lyne) they have2 boys Rory & Kieran. Enda is the holder of 3 Co. Championships won with his native club Athlone, he was a member of the Athlone team defeated by Portlaoise team in 1972 Leinster Final. he represented Westmeath at inter county level for 5 years.

Quite adapt at other codes he played soccer with Athlone Town and won representative honors with Connacht in  rugby. He lined out with Dr. Crokes for a number of years many will remember him as a teak tough corner back. Presently and for a considerable period  of time he has been actively involved in Dr. Crokes Juvenile Section.

Always one who actively seeks out the fixtures list at all levels he attends a large amount of games during the season.

A person well capable of discussing the merits of individual players, and always one who is positive and praiseworthy  in his observations.

Enda you are a tremendous choice as Supporter of the Year.

Kieran O’Leary  named as Young Player of the Year

This year for the 1st time Dr. Crokes are honoring a young player who will be presented with Micheal (Haulie) Keogh Memorial Cup. The inaugural recipient is Kieran O’Leary. The 18year old Woodlawn Park lad has achieved a lot in a relatively short career. His tally of 5-05 in the 2005 Kerry Co. Senior Championship bears testament to his talents.

The holder of Munster Minor medal with Kerry in 2004 he also holds 2 Senior Co. League, 2 Minor Co. League, Munster Senior League, O’Donoghue Cup, O`Sullivan Cup, U21, Minor, U16 East Kerry medals along with Munster U16 medal with Kerry South. 2 Dunlop Cup, 2 Russell Cup,2 O`Sullivan Cup with St. Brendan’s.

Captain of the 2005 Dr. Crokes  Minor team of which his younger brother David was on the panel  and other brother Jonathan was the mascot. Kieran ,made his Senior debut for Dr. Crokes in that never to be forgotten 2004 Co. League Final v Austin Stacks, deep into extra time Dr. Crokes Manager Pat O`Shea threw caution to the wind and introduced Kieran, his judgment was quickly rewarded when Kieran scored the all important goal that ensured victory for his club. He has also had his share of major disappointments losing Minor All Ireland in 2004, Munster  Minor Championship, and Minor & Senior Co. Finals in 2005.

The eldest of 3 boys of John & Joan, Kieran is currently a student at IT Tralee, from a young age he was identified by shrewd judges within the Dr. Crokes Club as a precocious talent, one who could scale the heights in Gaelic Football. They were not alone, as Kerry Manager Jack O’Connor called him on to the Kerry panel and he has played 3 games in the McGrath Cup and was introduced as a sub in the National League Game v Mayo on Sat. last.

For one who will not turn 19years until July this is a marvelous achievement and I have no doubt that where Gaelic Football will be spoken of in the not too distant future the name of Kieran O’Leary will be to the fore.

Kieran congratulations on your selection, an honor richly deserved.

Jim Connelly Club Person of the Year

Galway man Jim Connelly has been chosen as Club Person of the Year, Jim a native of Glenamaddy has been involved with Dr. Crokes Club since1978. He has served the club  in a multiciplicity of roles during that time, no year has gone by that Jim was not involved as selector on some team or other be it Juvenile, Minor, U21, Junior. Quietly spoken, an extremely good judge of a footballer his opinion are regularly sought out in “Becketts Corner”. A large seller of our weekly Lotto Tickets, no task is beyond Jim always one of the first to put his shoulder to the wheel for the overall good of the club.

Married to fellow Galway native Kathleen,( former Chairperson of our Social Club) they have 3 grown up children, Maurina, Siobhan, and Brian, and four grand children Timmy & Seodhna O’Donoghue, Clodagh & Aoibhe Brennan. Jim began playing his club football with St. Pats his local club until he emigrated to England throwing in his lot with St. Dympnas in Luton. In 1964 he moved to New York where he joined the Cork Club , he continued to assist them until he returned to Ireland in 1977.This writer has it on fairly good authority that he was a full-back of the traditional style(though shalt not past mould). A raconteur and ball- hopper of note, blessed with a hearty laugh, quite capable of giving a bar of a song when called upon and has been known to raise a glass or two in his time.

Jim, you are a worthy recipient of Club Person of the Year.

Next week the selection of Player of the year, supporter of the year , and hurler of the year will be announced. All awards will be presented at the Annual Social.

South Kerry indoor hurling --- Under 12  blitz.
For our first outing in this competition we  traveled to
Waterville on January 28th and  accounted for both Waterville and Seem.

Cain O’Leonard and Laurence Byrnes and some well taken goals by Aodan Burns,
John L Ivory and Alex Goggins.
On February 4th we played at home against Kenmare, Rathmore and Waterville.
