June Reports 2006

28/06/06

Senior: Co. Championship we have been drawn against the winners of Milltown/Castlemaine v Legion in the quarter final. We drew Spa in the O’Donoghue Cup and Currow B in the O`Sullivan Cup.

Junior Co. League: Dr. Crokes 0-15 Austin Stacks 0-10. played at home on the 21st June this was an amazing type of game, we started well kicking some tremendous points and at the interval led 0-9 to 0-04. Austin Stacks came out a much more determined side in the second half and kicked six points without reply  in the 3rd quarter to go into the lead. There was a complete reversal in the final quarter when again it was our turn to kick 6 points without reply. This game marked the return of David Moloney making his seasonal debut after his sojourn in South America he showed a high level of fitness scoring 5 points which augurs well for the rest of the season and he will no doubt be a huge addition to the Senior squad.  A very depleted team traveled to Gallarus on Friday night where they were heavily defeated by the Gaeltacht.

Coiste Na Og: U11 on Wednesday night Dr. Crokes  B played their final group game away to Kenmare.  We started this game superbly and led at half time by 4-2 to 1-3.  In the second half each player gave everything they had to run our clear winners by a score of 6-9 to 3-6, with all six forwards scoring along with the midfield and centre backs.  This was a fine performance indeed.
Dr. Crokes entered two teams in this competition - each of which finished runners up in groups A and B.  This allowed us to use a total of forty players, all of whom gained great experience. Each team only lost one game. Well done to everyone involved.
Dr. Crokes B Team and Scorers: J. O'Leary, C. McSharry, G. Murphy (0-1), D. Healy, P. Clarke, C. Regan (0-1), J. O Sullivan, L. Byrnes (1-0), J. Brennan (1-1), J. Kiely (0-4), J. Lenihan (0-1), M. Ryan (1-0), R. O Connor (1-), D. O Doherty (1-2) and M. Casey (1-0)

U12 Team 1 Dr. Crokes 4-04 Laune Rangers 4-10 Highly entertaining game with  both teams very committed, Dr. Crokes had the better of exchanges in the opening half and led at half time by two points with 3 goals from Lawrence Byrnes. In the second half Laune Rangers had the better of the early exchanges and scored 2 goals in the first 10 minutes. Dr. Crokes were playing catch up for the remainder of the game and found it difficult to breach the L. Rangers defense.  Impressive displays from Cian O`Lionaird, Michael O`Leary in defense Will Horan and Mike Sexton tried hardest up front. Panel: Paul Clifford, Eric O’Connor, Will Horan Jason Lyne, MacDara Willis, Cian OLionaird. Michael Sexton, Johnny Courtney Niall O`Riordan, Johnny O’Leary, Mikey O’Leary, Lawrence Byrnes, Tony Brosnan, Gavin O`Shea, Gearoid Coughlan, Keith Flynn.

Team 2 Dr. Crokes 6-9 Laune Ranger 7-08. we were under severe pressure in the first half and trailed to  what looked to be a unassailable lead of 5-04 to 0-01 at half time. A number of positional switches at half time had the desired effect. Jordan Kiely moved to midfield and with Ristard Clifford took control and with a plentiful supply going to the forwards Sean Hurley and Jeremiah Fitzgerald scored some great goals we led but with the last kick of the game Laune Rangers got the winning score after a well worked move.  Defenders Shane Lyne, Mike  O`Shea were very solid.

U14: We defeated Fossa on score line of 3-18 to 5-08 in E.K.L. Played at Lewis Road on Monday night some of the football played in this game was of the highest quality. In arrears at the interval by the minimum we dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half kicking some tremendous points and three goals by Bryan O`Shea, Daniel Healy, and Derrick Maye ensured victory. Others who impressed were Anthony Keogh, Conor McGill, Chris Brady, Cian O`Neill and Anthony Cronin.

Feile Peil : Best of luck to young Dylan O’Neill who lines out with New York in this weekend Feile  to be played in Wicklow. Dylan is the son of Pat & Noreen(Tatler) so club stalwarts Grandfather Eddie Tatler and uncles Patrick O`Sullivan & Harry O’Neill will be monitoring his progression.

21/06/06

Co. Championship: Dr. Crokes 4-14 Kenmare 1-06. played at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday night we easily overcome the challenge of Kenmare to reach the q/final of the championship. Virtually dominant in all areas of the field we played a tremendous brand of football throughout and our passing and movement especially in the forward line was a joy to savour. The majority of the critics on the hill were in unison that it was a very workmanlike performance all orchestrated by Colm Cooper who adopted a roving role and became the main provider ably assisted up front by 3 goal hero Andrew Kenneally, Kieran O`Leary, (Capt).James Fleming, and Brian Looney. Eoin Brosnan  playing in a more defensive role always posed a threat when storming through  the centre and our entire back line were always in control expertly marshaled by goalkeeper Kieran Cremin who stopped a point blank shot in the 14th minute on one of the few occasions when our defense was breached. Management will be delighted to have overcome the first hurdle and been given the opportunity to utilize the bench.Team; Kieran Cremin, Shane Doolan, Luke Quinn, James Cahillane, Batt Moriarty, Michael Moloney, Eanna Kavanagh, Kieran Brosnan, Ambrose O`Donovan, Eoin Brosnan(0-02), Andrew Kenneally(3-01),James Fleming(0-03), Kieran O`Leary (0-01), Colm Cooper (0-04) Brian Looney (0-01). Subs: Edmund O`Sullivan (0-01), Bryan O`Donoghue, Vince Cooper, Nicholas Murphy (0-01) John Payne (1 0).

Lotto: The Jackpot of €4,800 on Sun night last was won by well known Club supporter  Evelyn O`Regan. Numbers drawn were 6,7,8,15. this was the third occasion that the Jackpot has been won by a member of the O`Regan household, they certainly have the midas touch, congratulations. There were 5 match 3 winners each receiving €100. Sheila Daly Knockeendubh, Joan Corkerry High Street, Tim Lenihan Boherbue, Ciaran o`Sullivan Gneevegulia, Leslie c/o Towers. Next weeks Jackpot €3,000 draw in Stretford End.

Coiste na Og:  Under 14 hurling team travelled to Skibbereen last weekend to test their skills against other teams from around Ireland and London in Féile na nGael.  Resplendent in their new tracksuits and gear specially acquired for this big step in their development and with the help of sponsors,  Uhlsport Slieve Bloom Manor B&B Muckross Road, AIB Killarney, ESB Moneypoint, Ulster Bank and Coca Cola, all 24 hurlers set off on their venture.

The first game against Skibereen’s O’Donovan Rossa team was hard fought, with both teams sharing the spoils in the first quarter.  Ryan O’Carroll started the scoring with a point from 20 meters out, which was followed by another from a well taken free by Evan O’Donoghue.  Midway through this half the Crokes boys took a lead of three point after Aodhán Burns shot two points over from play and Bryan O’Shea scored a great point from the sideline about 25 metres out.  All this effort was wiped out when Skib scored a goal.  But the Crokes would not lie down.  First Ryan Carroll drove on goal.  But the Skib goalkeeper saved a superb shot.  However, Brendan O’Keeffe came back on another attack and slotted a brilliant shot to the back of the net, to have Crokes leading 1-5 to 1-2 at half time.  Brendan O’Keeffe started the second half with a monster point from 45 metres out against a very strong breeze.  Unfortunately, this was Crokes only score in the second half.  With the aid of the wind, O’Donovan Rossas launched attack after attack.  Graham Fleming in goal pulled of a series of fantastic saves.  Captain Senan Lavery, Jason O’Shea and Jonathan Clery put in huge efforts to hold the line.  However, Skib brought the game back to a single point and in the dying moments saw a shot skim off a Crokes helmet to take an unnatural loop into the goal.  This stroke of bad luck meant a loss for Dr Cokes in a game where they had dominated and showed the better skills.

The next opposition was another Cork team Kilmacabea.  This was the game of this group, with the lead ebbing a flowing like the tide.  Unfortunately the tide was out for Crokes when the final whistle blew.  Again a late goal saw game lost by two points.  Evan O’Donoghue slotted over two frees from 45 meters out and then banged home a 21 yard free for a goal.  Brendan O’Keeffe scored another point from 20 meters and out the right.  In the second half, Tadgh Moore rose to catch a lobbing ball on the 13 meter line turned a slotted a beauty to ripple the net.  Anthony Cronin finished the scoring with a point from right side 13 meters out.  Kieran O’Donnell and Conor Fitzgerald were fantastic in defence, as they were in the first match, cutting off attack after attack.  Laurence Byrnes played his heart out a betrayed his young age with the maturity of his game.  Late in the second half he received an injury and had to leave the game.

The final game was against a London side.  They Crokes boys were determined not to return to Killarney without a victory under their belt.  We got a great start.  Matthew Moynihan pulled a ball out of the air a hammered home a goal.  Brendan O’Keeffe took two points from play with Anthony Cronin adding another.  Then came a golden period for Crokes.  It started with Anthony Cronin chasing down a ball that was given up by most for a wide.  But Anthony kept it in play, turned a banged home a goal from close range.  Anthony Keogh and Aodhán Burns followed up with goals of their own from the 13 meter line, one right, one left.  Evan O’Donoghue finished off this brace of goals from a 20 meter free.  Brendan O’ Keeffe changed tack and floated a point from way out and on the left.  Tadhg Moore completed the scoring with a huge score, a goal from the right hand side and surely 45 meters out.  The final score was 6-5 to 3-6 in favour of Crokes.  Senan Lavery (Capt) lead his team by example and was a tower of strength in defence, picking up every attack that came his way and always came out on top.  He was ably assisted by Vice-Captain Conor Fitzgerald.  Graham Fleming showed great agility as he stopped shot after shot in this game.

Crokes left the tournament in positive mood, with the sweet taste of victory.  The entire panel played their hearts out and nothing more could have been asked of these boys.  They returned in spades the support they got from parents and family who travelled to see them play and from Club members and committee at home along with our generous sponsors.  A bit of bad luck and the hop of a ball were all that between Crokes and a spot in the semi-final.  Our lads came away in the knowledge that their ability to hurl is on a par with their counterparts in Cork and London.  They have learned a lot from the experience and will have gained a confidence in their skill levels that will stand to them as they face the County League final in a few weeks.

Foireann: Graham Fleming, Evan O’Donoghue, Alex Goggin, Bryan O’Shea, David Leacy, Cian Mc Dermott, Conor Fitzgerald (vice-capt), Jonathan Clery, Ciarán O’Donnell, Anthony Keogh, Ignatius Curtin, Senan Lavery (capt),  Paul Clifford, Aodhán Burns, Brendan O’Grady, Anthony Cronin, John Ivory, Jason O’Shea, Brendan O’Keeffe, Tadgh Moore, Laurence Byrnes, Cian Ó Lionáird, Matthew Moynihan, Ryan O’Carroll.

U14 football:  after their defeat at the hands of  Glenflesk Dr. Crokes bounced back to defeat Firies  5-04 to 2-07 in the EKL at home on June 12th. We were 5points in arrears at half time but inspirational play by Gordan Buckley(capt.) paved the way for a fight back.

A capital goal by Anthony Keogh gave us the lead we never relinquished. Our games remaining in this competition v Gneevegulia , Fossa and Kenmare.

U`10`s: returned to Dromtariffe for the Brian Cronin Memorial Tournament following an impressive 1st group stages winning all three games they were grouped for the cup with strong cork opposition in Macroom, Inniscarra, and Ballyclough. We began with an impressive win over Macroom on a sweltering hot day there was a delay in commencing our second game and we started poorly against Inniscarra and with each game only 10mins. aside we found ourselves well in arrears at the break in the second half we rallied and were only defeated by two points. In the third and final group game we easily accounted for Ballyclough but it was not enough to make the final. On behalf of all the team mentor we wish to thank Dromtariffe club for their hospitality, this was a great learning process for these talented youngsters who are a credit to the club and their families. The late Brian Cronin who this magnificent tournament is played in memory of  was a nephew of our former  club Chairman Donie & Mike O`Leary.

U11`s. Team 1 played Fossa away on Wed. last. In a tense game played at a high tempo through out we led at half time after playing with a strong wind on a score line of 2-11 to 2-03. it was a great credit to Fossa who rallied in the second half to snatch a share of the spoils with the last kick of the game on a score of 3-14 to 5-08. Team 2 played Legion at home on the same night and this very young team were comphrensively defeated by our town rivals. Both teams came into this game unbeaten. Legion playing with the aid of a strong wind dominated the opening proceedings but it is to the credit of our young guns who battled tremendously in the second half to narrow the gap considerably.

U12 team 2 traveled to Listowel on Sun. last and came away with a fine victory winning 5-06 to 3-07.

Congratulations: I’m reliably informed that former dashing corner back, club secretary, and golf society captain and present Golfer of the Year Greg O’Donoghue was recently admitted to that exclusive body? “the Hole in One Club”. Well done Greg.

Comings & Goings: over the weekend we have seen some movement by various players. We extend a big welcome home to Senior panelists David Moloney & Keith McMahon on their return from sunnier climes and wish bon voyage to James Jones & Finian Moran who have left for an extended

break in Australia. David is looking extremely fit it must be from all that mountain climbing in Brazil.

Under 12 hurling - County  league. Our  under 12 hurlers  played Abbeydorney  last weekin the county league.  It was a difficult assigment to play one of the stronger teams in their own ground  and despite some heroic efforts  from our young Crokes team  the result  did not go our way in the finish. Lining out without the services of our captain , Aodain Burns put us under pressure from the start , however our lads fought hard and showed good battling qualities throughout the first half  which meant that the game was still alive at the break. In the second half Abbeydorney continued their rich vein of form and despite a few goals from Alex Goggins and Jack Lenihan the result was in Abbeydorney's favour with ten minutes remaining.
They ran out deserving winners but their task was not made easy and  there is an amount credit due to our boys for  their fighting spirit and their second half performance  was indeed very encouraging.

Under 14 Hurlers

This is the build up to Féile that the Dr Crokes lads needed.  It was a decisive victory over Laune Rangers, but more important, it was a victory through skilful hurling.  From the outset, these lads meant business.  Evan O’Donoghue slotted over a sixty-five and for good measure added another minutes later.  In between Alex Goggins hammered home a blazing goal.  Bryan O’Shea got stuck in and claimed a goal for himself before half-time to bring Crokes to 2-2 to nil ahead.Laune improved in the second half to score 4 points.  Alex Goggin was on fire and added three more goals to his tally in the second half to claim man of the match.  Bryan O’Shea was on target again and scored another goal.  Anthony Keogh and Ignatius Curtin wrapped up the scoring with two fine points.  The final score was 6-4 to 0-4 in favour of Dr Crokes.  Ryan O’Carroll, playing his first game, was brilliant and really got to grips with game.  Jonathon Clery played very well in defence.

With Féile drawing nearer, players are really putting in the effort.  Here are some of our players.

Evan O’Donoghue is 13 and attends second year at St Brendan’s College.  Evan has been selected for the under 14 Development Squad and has the skill to make the Kerry team.  He had won both under 12 and under 14 hurling County League medals.  He also plays rugby and would like to be an architect when he leaves school.  Evan’s favourite footballer is Colm Cooper and his favourite hurler is Clare’s Seanie Mc Mahon.

Brian O’Shea is 12 and is in rang 6 in Gaelscoil Faithleann.  He has won under 12 County League medals for both hurling and football along with an under 14 East Kerry medal and a town league medal in basketball.  Brian plays football, basketball and soccer.  His favourite footballer is Eoin Brosnan and John Gardiner is his favourite hurler. Brian would like to be a carpenter after his schooling is over.

David Leacy is 14 and attends second year in St. Brendan’s College.  David has won the Killarney Athletic 7 aside soccer tournament and prizes at golf.  He also plays football, soccer and golf.  He is a big fan of Wexford footballer Matty Forde and his favourite hurler is Damien Fitzhenry.  David is still deciding whether he would rather be a carpenter or an accountant when he finishes school.
