Dr. Crokes maintained their un-beaten record in this years co. league with an last kick of the game equaliser from David Moloney in this entertaining game on Sat. night. Gneevegulia were first to score in the opening minute when Liam Murphy kicked the first of his eight points from a free. Dr. Crokes had points from B. Looney and Andrew Kenneally to narrow the gap to the minimum after 25 mins. But 2 L. Murphy points gave the visitors a three point lead at the break 0-08 to 0-05. On the resumption Looney & Murphy exchanged points in the opening minutes Casey with two converted frees narrowed the gap to the minimum after six but ponts from Murphy and Basrry O`Leary stretched the Gneevegulia lead Casey and Shane O`Neill narrowed the gap. O`Connor & Murphy gave a two point lead with as many minutes remaining but Crokes with points from Eoin Brosnan and the last gasp effort from Moloney brought the game to its conclusion. EAST KERRY U14c/ship FINAL Dr. Crokes 3-09 Legion 1-11 on Friday night last we defeated much fancied Legion by 4pts on a score 3-09 to 1-11, A first half hat trick by Laurence Byrnes saw us race into halftime lead of 9pts, As expected our opponents came at us but our players stood tall against league and Kerry Feile winners, We finished stronger and ran out deserving winners. Mentors James Lyne, Andrew Kenneally, Tommy Brosnan, Pat O Shea, Seamie Doc would like too thank all our u14 panel for there superb effort all year, they are a credit to there club and there families, training has been well attended the hard work bore its fruit with us becoming East Kerry u14 champions for 2009. We have 32 on our panel each and everyone can be proud of there individual progress as we are of them. We would also like too thank all parents and fellow club members for such loyal support all year, in life we have good days and bad, this was a good day for Dr. Crokes. CO. LEAGUE U16 we continue to remain in un-beaten in this competition with another victory over Mitchels on Friday last. This group are improving with each outing thanks in no small way to the level of coaching they are receiving. East Kerry U11 Final Dr Crokes 30pts (2.14) Kenmare 13pts (1.06) Our U11’s recently captured the East Kerry trophy with a superb display against a very game Kenmare team. Kenmare opened the scoring with their first attack but thereafter our boys took control of the game and ran out very convincing winners. Billy Courtney and Mark O’Shea dominated midfield from the start and with David Shaw controlling the half back line the foundation was laid for this victory. Conor Harrington scored some great early points to get us on our way, ably assisted by Patrick Wrenn and James McAuliffe . Our Captain Brendan Coppinger led by example and worked his socks off for the team. David Rea and Dion Marcus fought for every ball and scored some lovely points. Our backs were strong throughout the game. Michael Potts and Shane O’Connor were steadiness personified and drove forward at every opportunity. The full back line of Kieran Fitzpatrick, Murt O’Shea and Donie O’Sullivan didn’t concede an inch all night and made Kenmare earn any score they got. Aodan Browne had a great night in the goals and his clever kick outs were the start of a lot of good moves. Jack O’Connor, John Beecher, Gavin O’Sullivan, Jack Griffin, James Kelly, all came on and kept up the high standard. This is a great bunch of lads who play a lovely style of football and all of them have lots of skill. More important than that though is the attitude they bring to the games. They are never beaten, they work hard for each other and get as much thrill from a good block down or tackle as they do from any score. Long may that continue. Our Captain Brendan accepted the trophy and gave a great speech. The 3 in a row has been completed, we look forward to next year. LOTTO there was no winner of the Jackpot of €3,000 on Sunday last. BEST WISHES for a speedy recovery to U16 player Chris Lawlor who received a shoulder injury last week, also to Seamus O`Shea who is currently sidelined. SYMPATHY to the O`Leary family on the death of Dan. 22/07/09 Minor County Shield Dr. Crokes 2-12 Austin Stacks 1-11 This to be fair was our best performance to date. From our goalie James Barry, to the panel we used, this was a terrific display. Our backs played very well as a unit and we were doing quite well at mid-field. Keith O' Leary was instrumental in our first goal when he set up Chris Brady who finished brilliantly. We lead at half time by 1-5 to 0-7. To be fair, it was a free-flowing game with some great passages of play. Keith O' Leary was again involved in the second goal, when he put Alex O' Sullivan through to crash the ball to the net. Stacks put the pressure on but when Alex O' Sullivan scored a terrific sideline ball, the game was put beyond the reach of the visitors. This result now puts us in the last four of this competition. All in all, an excellent display. SENIOR we have a Div. 1 co. league game on Sunday next when we entertain Gneevegulia @ 2.30pm COISTE NA OG our u16 team continue to improve with some fine displays in the co. competition. SYMPATHY to the McLellan family on the death of Seamus. 15/07/09 The junior team continued on their winning way recently in the county league with a 4-19 to 3-9 home win over Milltown/Castlemaine. With just one match left to play, away to Listowel on Friday next, July 18th at 7.30 pm, Dr Crokes lead the field and are through to the semi-finals. In the recent home game Dr Crokes set a blistering pace and led 3-1 to 0-1 after 17 minutes, but were pulled back to level terms on two occasions When they looked like being overhauled in the final five minutes, they upped the tempo and tacked on 1-1 to copper fasten victory. Very much the curates egg syndrome, good in spots, the team management will be looking for more consistency over the full hour before thoughts of silverware become a reality. The towering figure of returned Kieran Brosnan from Ozzie land at full forward made his presence felt with 2 goals and a further goal by Denis Galvin, Crokes top scorer on the night put the home side 3 clear goals ahead by the 17th minute. The opposition chiselled away at the lead with some great points and a defensive error left Milltown/Castlemaine in for a goal that caught the full-back line too square and in nipped the opposition for a goal. Level on 3 occasions in the final 12 minutes, Crokes fired over some great point and the incisive Denis Galvin boosted his match tally to 2-4 with a late cracking goal. Foireann; D.Neeson. T Ryan, F Moran, K McMahon, D O Leary, J Cahillane, K Smyth, J Jones, A Kennelly, S O Neill, D Moloney, R Mangan, D Galvin, K Brosnan and Johnny O Sullivan, who showed that he is on the road back to his former self. Substitutes, F Fitzgerald, J Clarke and S Kavanagh impressed when they were introduced. U-21 County Championship. Feale Rangers 0-19 Dr. Crokes 3-05 We made the long trip to Moyvane last Thursday evening, with, it must be said, a very understrength team. We got off to a great start with a goal by Shane O' Neill after just 3 minutes. Johnny Buckley was more than holding his own at mid-field but we squandered a few good chances and went in at half-time behind by 0-10 to 1-3. The home team started the better but a goal by Rory Mangan gave us a life-line and with 15 minutes to go there was just 1 point between the sides. This was the closest we got and the home side ran out winners by 5 points. All in all, with many players missing, the lads put in a great performance. A special mention to Pat Fuller and Jason Grady, who showed up at late notice to again don the black and amber jersey. COISTE NA OG It may have taken 125 years, but it was worth every day of it. The first ever Dr Crokes hurling team ran on to Croke Park last Tuesday. Twenty of our under 12 team had the opportunity to play three games at GAA Headquarters – and did they take that opportunity. We first met old friends, Lattin Cullen, with whom we had a joint training session earlier in the year. Plans were made for another meeting in September, before the current business was attended to. As expected, we had a very sporting game with Lattin. It was close, but they put up a few extra points by the time this game was over. Our second game brought Patrickswell from Limerick. This was a very exciting game and our lads were really getting into their stride. The Crokes hurlers had most of the possession, but did not always convert this into scores. It was point for point until Patrickswell grabbed a late goal. There was not enough time to claw this lead back before the final whistle. Finally, we met another Kerry team, Abbeydorney. Again, both teams played some skilful hurling. This was Crokes best game and scores came more readily and it was good to finish off on a winning note. This was a hugely enjoyable day for everyone, players, coaches and parents, alike. There were many promises to be back again, when the stakes would be higher. But for now, this experience of playing in Croke Park would suffice. Finally, a number of mentors were seen fulfilling lifetime dreams. Hurlies were smuggled in and the senior “kids” got to score several goals, points and the odd wide on this field of dreams. CONGRATULATIONS to underage hurling mentor Sean Browne on his recent engagement to Nicola Leahy. 50 WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Congratulations to Club vice president Liam Murphy and wife Sheila who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last weekend. 08/07/09 JUNIOR CO. LEAGUE The junior team qualified for the semi-final for the county league with a clear cut 2-11 to 0-7 win over Dingle in Páirc an Aghasaigh on Saturday last. The score line suggests a runaway victory,; it was anything but that. On splendidly prepared field, the local side were aided by the breeze in that first half. Our defence was well tested. They made several blunders, which would cost dearly in another game. David Nelson saved our bacon with a splendid one handed save in the 13th minute with Liam Og O Higín bearing down on him. That steadied the defence and they did well to keep us ahead at the break by 4 points to 2. The introduction of Kieran Brosnan to midfield heralded aerial supremacy for the Crokes. The forwards weren’t found wanting as they piled on the scores. Kieran ran on for the first goal and Barra O Connell, benefiting from his release to wing forward rifled home the second goal. Buddy O Leary kicked a splendid 50m free over the black spot. Job done ;qualification achieved. Better performances needed to capture silverware. The management continued its policy of using all permitted 5 subs where feasible and this is making for a very competitive element in team selection. Foireann; D Neeson. K Ward, F Moran, K McMahon, D O Leary, F Fitzgerald, K Smyth, J Jones, B O Connell, S Myers, A Kennelly, S O Neill, D Galvin, T J Cronin, K O Leary. Fir ionaid; C O Neill, P J Lawlor N O Connell, J O Sullivan, J Clarke, K Brosnan EAST KERRY MINOR LEAGUE Kilcummin 2-13 Dr Crokes 2-06 The scoreline suggests an easy win for the home team but in truth it was not the way. After twenty minutes of the match we were leading 1-4 to 0-3 with the goal scored by Alex O Sullivan and it must be said if we had our shooting boots on we could of been more on front. We trailed at half time by 1-5 to 1-4. Kilcummin started the second half well and before we knew we were 9 points behind. It must be said this team has great character and kept battling to the very end. Our second goal came 5minutes from the finish scored by Joseph Keogh. Our chins are still up and we will thrive on. COISTE NA OG Dr Crokes are back in Croke Park, again. This time it is not our senior footballers, but our under 12 hurlers. Our young hurlers will have the honour of playing three games on the hallowed turf of Croke Park, meeting Lattin Cullen, Patrickswell and Abbeydorney. Afterwards they will take in the Museum at GAA Headquarters.
This hurling team were promoted to Division two this year and hurled extremely well to win through to the league final against Ardfert. They were unlucky in that game, but were very satisfied with the progress they have made this year. It is fitting then that they are the only hurling team from South Kerry to be selected for this trip of a lifetime. A lot of work has gone on into ensuring that this event would happen and our young hurlers can not wait to grasp this opportunity. This is in keeping with Club policy to provide the best coaching, best games and best sporting experience for our young members. On Thursday last July 3 we won the East Kerry U11 competition for the third year in succession with a comfortable victory over a gallant Kenmare side. There was some wonderful played by a very talented squad. Well done. U12 Both our u12 teams travelled to Austin Stacks on Sunday night and both teams came away with victories to finish phase 2 of the league on a high. Our two teams were well on top and had easy victories in the end. Team Black won 2-17 Stacks 1-7. Team Amber 2.14 Stacks 0.3. A big thank you to all the players involved and to the dedicated coaches who worked with both teams and to the parents who turned up in great numbers to support the teams throughout the year. Well done to all involved. U16 CO. LEAGUE RD. 2 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-03 Dr. Crokes 1-15, despite a poor start conceding three early goals we showed great character to fight back for a decisive victory. Best for Dr. Crokes on the day were defenders Jason Lyne, Cian O`Lionaird and Senan Lavery, Midfielders Chris Lawlor and Cillian Fitzgerald provided the forward line with ample possession where Will Horan Niall O`Riordan Darragh Stack and Bryan O`Shea were best. LOTTO there was no winner of the Jackpot of €5,100 on Sunday July 5 numbers drawn were 9,14,17,23. Seventeen patrons matched three numbers each receiving €30. LEAGUE DIV. 1 Dr. Crokes 1-13 Ardfert 0-12 we maintained our unbeaten run to remain at the top of the co. league with an away win over Ardfert on Friday last. This was a much improved display from the previous week despite having a number of personnel changes. CO. LEAGUE DIV. 2 FINAL Dr Crokes 1-10 Kilmoyley 3-11 Played in Austin Stacks Park on Saturday 27th June, Crokes hurlers were beaten by 7 points in this entertaining county league Div 2 Final. It was yet again unfortunately a game of 2 halves. Crokes never came out of the blocks in the first in the first half and while enjoying a share of possession, made no impact up front and conceded two relatively easy goals. Kilmoyley did enjoy the wind to their backs and while having some bad wides led at half time 2-7 to 0-1. The Crokes selector introduced Diarmuid Lane and Johnny Dunphy for the second half and took the game to Kilmoyley. Led from the back by the excellent Shane Kavanagh, Brendan O’Donovan and David Coughlan, Crokes dominated play. Keith Curtin got into the game at midfield striking over 6 points (5 frees) and he was ably assisted by Brian Darcy. Points from Patrick Landers (1), Diarmuid Lane (1) and Billy O’Dea closed the gap. A Sean Burchill goal hinted at a sense of victory but Crokes conceded another goal when the ever dangerous Sean Maunsell set up an easy chance for a tap in goal against the run of play. Crokes never recovered from the goal. Kevin Landers and Jim Kennedy were introduced with 15 minutes to go and the former played outstandingly well and one wonders what might have been if able to play from the start. Crokes played excellent hurling in the final 10 minutes but could not get through for the vital goals. While it was disappointing to lose the team must be applauded for their league efforts and team mentors Dave Cotter, Gene Doherty and Paul Downey can look forward to the intermediate championship. That having being said, greater commitment will be required from some players and bigger numbers will be required at training sessions. We wish Seanie Morris a speedy recovery from a recent foot operation. Team & Scorers:Tim Hourigan, Shane Kavanagh, Brendan O’Donovan, Tom Murphy, Mike Muprhy, David Coughlan, Paul Griffin (capt), Keith Curtin (0-6), Brian O’Sullivan D’Arcy, Darren O’Dea, Patrick Landers (0-1), Sean Burchill (1-1), Mike O’Keefe, Barry O’Grady, Billy O’Dea (0-1). Subs: Diarmuid Lane(0-1), Johnny Dunphy, Kevin Landers, Jim Kennedy, Liam Bergin, Stephen O’Brien, Seanie Morris, Evan O’Donoghue. Minor County Championship Dr. Crokes 1-7 Legion 4-9 Played in Lewis Road, we got off to the worst possible start with the visitors scoring a goal after 30 seconds. We struggled for a lot of the first half and we trailed at half time by 0-4 to 2-6. To be fair to the boys, they rallied in the second half and played some great football and was it not for some poor shooting in front of the goal, we would have been a lot closer. Best on the night were Killian Fitzgerald, Kieran Ward, Chris Lawlor and Mark Egan. U-21 County Championship Laune Rangers 3-8 Dr. Crokes 5-14 A high scoring encounter was played in Killorglin. We got off to a tremendous start and led by 1-1 to no score after 3 minutes, the goal a cracker by Daithí Casey. We led comfortably at half-time by 2-8 to 1-3. To be fair to Laune Rangers, they started the second half very well but our lads were always in control and ran out deserving winners. Best for Crokes on the night were; Fionn Fitzgerald, David O' Leary, John Bartlett, T.J. Cronin and Johnny Buckley, who got the man of the match award, sponsored by Acorn Life. EAST KERRY U16 neighbours Legion were again the visitors for this keenly contested 1st round co. league clash on Wednesday last. We were victorious on a score-line of 2-10 to 2-07. This was a good display considering a number had played in the minor match on the previous evening and had little preparation done due to exams. We will improve considerably from this outing. LOTTO ther was no winner of the Jackpot of €4,800 on Sunday June 28, numbers drawn were 4,8,13,21. Seventeen patrons matched three numbers each receiving €30. Jackpot on Sunday next €5,100. CONGRATULATIONS to David (Buddy) O`Leary who won the sweep on the US Open. This fund raiser was again a massive success and we wish to thank everyone who participated. We would also like to thank our three computer wizards Liam Hartnett, Terry Potts and Brian O`Callaghan who collated the scoring and updated the website regularly much to the enjoyment of all participants. We will be running another challenge on the British Open and entry forms will be available this weekend.
