MINOR CO. LEAGUE FINAL Dr. Crokes 1-12 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-16, we succumbed to the superior physical strength of an O’Rahillys side in the 2008 league final. This was the fifth year in succession that these two club sides have faced off in the final and our opponents have come out on top on 3/2 victory statistic.

We started the game minus three regulars for a variety of reasons and this put tremendous pressure on some of our younger players who lacked the experience at this level.

We started brightly and Daithi Casey opened the scoring with a point in the first minute, our opponents had three unanswered points until Casey narrowed the gap in the eight minute. Our opponents with more scoring potential continued to pile on the pressure but further points from Casey (2), Shane O’Neill, and Mark O’Donoghue left us trailing at the break 0-10 to 0-06. On the resumption, we thundered into the game and points from T. J. Cronin (2) and Casey narrowed the gap to the minimum after eight minutes. In the 12th minute against the run of play our Rahillys goaled their first score of the second period, they quickly added further points to increase the advantage, two magnificent saves by goalkeeper David Neeson kept our hopes alive.

We continued to plug away and carried the game to our opponents and a goal by substitute Robert Watson in the 26th minute narrowed the gap, in the dying minutes, O’Rahillys tacked on two more points to put victory out of our reach.

One has to be proud of this young side that battled bravely all through and were un-fortunate to meet such tough opposition on the night.

Team: D. Neeson(Capt.) K. Ward, J. Clarke, S. Coppinger, C. O’Neill, f. Fitzgerald, N. O’Connell, D. Casey(0-07), P.J.Lawlor, C. Brady, S. O’Neill(0-02), T. O’Donoghue, G. Buckley, T.J.Cronin(0-02), M. O`Donoghue(0-01), Subs; E. Clifton, R. Watson (1-0)

INTERMEDIATE HURLING Dr Crokes 3-9 Kenmare 3-9 Played on Wednesday  the 23rd July Crokes were lucky to survive in this years Intermediate Hurling Championship with Jim Kennedy goaling at the death from a free to level matters. We lined out without Barry O`Grady (broken bone in hand) and Kevin Smith and with Gary Landers carrying an injury in to the game. On the plus side, John Bergin drove from Kilkenny to line out wing forward.

Crokes while leading at half time by 5 points squandered chances in the first half and never seem to quite lift their game to a high standard while still playing well.

Crokes gifted Kenmare a goal at the start through a defensive error but struck back well and were 1-2 to a 1-0 up after 12 minutes with Jim Kennedy pulling on a ground ball for a great goal. Liam Moloney under pressure knocked over a great point. Both teams exchanged points and then Crokes stretched their lead through a Jim Kennedy point and a great goal by Brian Darcy who pulled on a cross-field pass from Liam Moloney. After another Jim Kennedy point Kenmare tacked on 2 points to leave the half time score with Crokes leading 2-5 to 1-3.

The early part of the second half was tit for tat with some hard challenges going in as both teams tried to gain supremacy. Kenmare matched 3 points from Jim Kennedy and Crokes led 2-8 to 1-6 after the first quarter. Then disaster struck when Kenmare caught the Crokes defence flat footed and scored in to an empty net with John Cagney forced to leave his line. Patrick Landers replied with a point for Crokes but then Kenmare goaled again, this time a great shot from 30 yards. Kenmare had the upper hand now and Gary Landers retired injured with Diarmuid Lane moving to the forwards and John Bergin going to wingback where he mounted a number of Crokes attacks. The Kenmare defence mopped up a lot of breaking ball and scored 2 further points to leave them 3 ahead with the game coming to a close. Crokes piled on the pressure and were eventually rewarded with a free, which Crokes top scorer Jim Kennedy managed to find the net through a crowded goalmouth. Crokes survived for a replay and the players and management know they must up their performance to win this one.

COISTE NA OG hurling teams from Cork and Limerick visited Lewis Road last Saturday to take on the local Dr Crokes under 8 and under 12 teams. Both fields were full of hurlers and supporters from Newtownshandrum and Newcastlewest as well as Dr. Crokes. Unfortunately, Kenmare had to withdraw from our tournament at the last minute, which did not provide enough time to get a replacement.  However, hurlers are a resourceful lot and mentors of the three remaining teams put a team together from the surplus numbers they carried with them.

Every game was contested with great skill and courage and only a few points separated the teams at the end of each game.  The experienced gained by our players and mentors is very important for the development of our under age hurling.  There is no doubt but that our players posses all the skills that our Cork and Limerick counterparts demonstrated.  This encounter shows that we are progressing in the right direction and with a little bit of speed and confidence Dr Crokes can hold with the best.

Colm Cooper made the presentations at the end of the tournament and proved to be a very popular man with hurlers as well as footballers.  Mentors and supporters from the visiting teams were impressed with Colm’s patience and generosity of time with the young hurlers as he signed countless hurlies, sliotars and jerseys. The great man stood in for hundreds of photographs with children and not a few adults also. Thanks Colm, as always a true Clubman.

After the event on the field, matters moved to the clubhouse, where the events committee laid on a spread that was most welcome by all.  Thanks very much ladies.

This festival of hurling continues for the under 8 team.  Dr Crokes are hosting three weeks of hurling blitz’s over the next three Saturdays on behalf of the Kerry Hurling Development Steering Group.  The event, sponsored by AIB, will see teams from South Kerry participating.  Players should be in Lewis Road between 10.30 and 10.45.  Games start at 11.00.

In September, it will be the turn of the under 10 and under 14 team.  Dr Crokes plan to host a similar blitz to last Saturday’s for these age groups.

EAST KERRY U21 FINAL Dr. Crokes 1-15 Rathmore 0-10. We retained the U21 title with a win over Rathmore. Played in Kilcummin on July 18th this victory was fashioned in the first half with aid of a strong wind. In a game that marked the return to action of Johnny Buckley after a serious hand injury Jamie Doolan opened our account in the first minute with a point, Rathmore equalised in the third but then we went on a scoring spree with points from R. Mangan, Captain K. O’Leary, B. Looney, J. Doolan, and in the tenth minute Mangan found the net with a rocket. We were dominating in all sectors and led at the break 1-11 to 0-04.

On the resumption our opponents aided by the elements our opponents began to come more into the game and kicked three unanswered points we were guilty of some slack shooting in the opening minutes of the half wasting a number of good chances. Three Jamie Doolan points in quick succession mid way through the half settled proceedings and put this game out of reach of our opponents and gave management the opportunity to give some game time to the fringe players. A wonderful victory were again our defence as a unit were on top all through this coupled with a dominating midfield ensued a plentiful supply to a hard working forward line each who had the beating of their opposite number.

Team: A. Kelly T. Ryan, M. Moloney, F. Fitzgerald, C. Egan, B. O’Connell, G. Tucker, J. Buckley. D. Casey, B. Looney, K. O’Leary (Capt.)(0-03) S. O’Neill, D. Galvin,(0-02) R. Mangan(1-01), J. Doolan,(0-09). Subs; P. O’Connor, J. Clarke, P.J.Lawlor, D. Neeson, K. Ward.

MINOR CO. CHAMPIONSHIP Dr. Crokes 3-15 Legion 1-17 (AET). In a rip-roaring contest played in Lewis Road on July 15th, we overcame the challenge of our neighbours in Round 1 of the Co. Minor Championship. We were first to settle and opened the scoring in the third minute when Shane O’Neill goaled. Scores were at a premium and both sides wasted good chances, our opponents opened their scoring in the 11th minute but two long range frees in the 12th & 15th minute by Captain Daithi Casey stretched our lead. Our defence were playing outstanding football and were like limpets to their opposite numbers first to the ball and clearing their lines regularly but in the 23rd. minute Legion breached our rearguard and scored a gem of a goal, Casey replied with two further points and in the 30th minute our opponents added another minor to leave the half-time score 1-04 to 1-02.

On the resumption our opponents were first to attack and levelled matters in the third minute, Fionn Fitzgerald inched us ahead but our opponents again levelled Casey tacked on another minor and then T.J. Cronin billowed the net after a great solo run and a further point from David O’Leary put us 2-07 to 1-05 after 13minutes. The turning point came when we had a player red carded this gave our opponents a major fillip and they began to enjoy more possession around the middle third kicking four points to narrow the gap, Casey again stretched our lead to two and with normal time fast approaching our opponents levelled matters. Deep in injury time, our opponents went ahead with a pointed free but in the eight minute of injury time up stepped Casey again with a magnificent pointed free from a difficult angle to leave the full time score 2-09 to 1-12.

In the first period of injury time our opponents were first to strike with a point, Casey again levelled and two O’Neill minors either side of a tremendous goal by substitute Gordon Buckley put us further in front, 2 points by our opponents narrowed the gap to leave the score 3-12 to 1-15 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, further points from Fitzgerald & Casey pushed us further ahead our opponents replied with two minors and fittingly it was to left to Casey to close proceedings with his tenth point of the game to leave the final score 3-15 to 1-17.

This was a wonderful performance by our lads they dug deep and battled bravely all through and each and everyone one of them was a hero on the night.

COISTE NA OG Congratulations to our gallant u 11 team on Friday night who defeated a very strong Spa outfit. This was one of the best games of football seen by many in a long day; it had commitment, skill and great point kicking. The East Kerry Board should be commended for introducing new rules at this age level, which meant a point got you 2 points and a goal received 1 point, which really improved young players kicking points.
The match itself was a very close affair with only 2 points separating the teams in the end. As a unit, the Croke players played some awesome football to lead at half time 13 points to 2 points playing with the breeze. The second half Spa came back to lead by 2 points with 2 minutes remaining and the signs were ominous for our lads but with great commitment and heart they never gave up and kicked 2 massive points to win the game at the death.
What a performance from all our team in which they never gave up and battled right to the end to win. Well done to all involved and to all the parents and supporters who braved the elements on what was a bad night weatherwise. To the team we say bravo.

U - 16 County League Div. 2Dr. Crokes vs. Lispole (venue: Lispole) 2.7.2008

A great game of football from start to finish with both teams having the upper hand at different times during the game and the result was not certain until the final whistle. Contrasts of styles was on display here with Lispole going the direct route using the catch and kick while Dr. Crokes carried the ball and used the short passing game all night. Crokes defence made things very difficult for Lispole with full back Gordon Buckley having a solid game from start to finish. The halfback line of Mark Egan, Chris Brady and Michael Beckett carried the ball at the Lispole backline at every opportunity. Normally goals win games and in the first half Crokes edged it with two goals (Conor Fitzgerald and Robert Watson) against Lispole's one. However, we were treated to a display of long-range point scoring in the second half. First, Lispole brought the game back to a single point with some fantastic long range shooting and then had a penalty saved by Crokes Keeper Ryan Patten. Crokes also had a penalty saved and then missed a great goal opportunity. Chris Lawlor Switched to centre back for Crokes and this allowed Chris Brady and Robert Watson to carry the game into the wind against Lispole. Great support play from wing forwards Cian O' Neill and (most improved player) Conor Fitzgerald created opportunities for Brian O' Shea at full forward who scored five great points in the last ten minutes.

Final Score: Dr. Crokes 2 - 10 Lispole 1 – 7

COISTE NA OG On Wednesday last our two U12 teams travelled to Tralee to play Strand Road.  The B team kicked off first and were a bit slow out of the blocks, letting Strand Road got the upper hand and raced into a 4 pt lead that they held into the second half.  This team however never knows when it is beat and battled back and eventually gained the upper hand finishing up with a one-point victory.  A massive result for a team under the cosh for so long, great team spirit involved.  Next B game is at home to Listowel on Tuesday 1st July.  Score on the night Strand Road 1-5 Dr. Crokes 2-3.
The A team took to the field and won the toss and played with the strong breeze.  We kicked some great points and led at half time by 9 pts to 1-1.  We started the second half extremely well grabbing 2 quick fire goals.  From this, we never looked back.  The passing improved as the game went on.  Again very little ball was wasted, we finally won the game on a score Strand Road 4-2 Dr. Crokes 5-11.  League positions not available going to print but we are challenging on both fronts.
On the trip to Tralee, we had 40 U12 boys who all played on the night - that is the real winner.

Our final game v Dingle was a real cracker with both teams playing some wonderful football, at half time the sides were level Dr, Crokes 3-02 Dingle 1-08. The second half continued in the same vein our passing, positional play was outstanding, and we ran out comfortable winners 6-11 to 2-11.

Under 16 East Kerry Div 2 Final Played on Monday 23rd June at Glenflesk - Our team were well up for the challenge from the beginning and had to be as they played into a stiff breeze for the first half. Our backs passed the ball well and carried the ball out of defence very well. Michael Beckett, Chris Brady and Mark Egan turned defence into attack on many occasions. Our opponents Kenmare put us under a lot of pressure and but for some wayward shooting would have been well ahead at half time. Dean Daly and Neily McEntaggart combined for a great goal in the first half to keep the scoreline in our favour. Great work form Cian O' Neill and Brian O' Shea in the forward line led to a number of great points. Chris Lawlor and Robert Watson worked very hard into the strong wind.

Late in the second half when leading by two points a penalty was awarded to Kenmare. They duly converted the penalty and the whistle went soon after. It was an awful way to end a great contest between two sporting teams.

Under 16 County league vs. Listowel

Our opponents dominated the first half aided by a strong wind and led at half time 1-5 to 0-1. Our play drastically improved in the second half and but for the concession of a couple of goals in quick succession, the result could have gone in our favour.Iggy Curtin was very solid in the full back line while mark Egan and Chris Brady's solo runs out of defence set up many an attack. Robert Watson and Chris Lawlor worked hard to the end but just couldn't make the link with the forwards. Best part of the performance was to see our lads battling right to the end for the crucial goal. Unfortunately it did not come and many chances were wasted in the last ten minutes. Final Score Crokes 2-9 Listowel 3-9

LOTTO there was no winner of the jackpot of €3,900 on Sunday last numbers drawn were 1, 2, 18, and 22. 4 patrons matched three numbers Kieran Ryan c/o Christy’s Main Street x2, Risteard O`Lionaird Muckross, Agatha Potts 30 Hawthorn Avenue. Jackpot next week €4,200.
