March Reports 2006

29/03/06

Minors: We started the defense of our Minor Co. League on Fri. March 24th last with a home game v Ballymacelligott, we were very quick to settle and had 1-01 on the scoreboard within the first six minutes and when we scored our second goal in the 15th minute it looked as if the game was going to be very one-sided but fair play to Ballymac they proved to be a dogged determined side and we went in at half-time on a scoreline of 2-04 to 0-4 after wasting many chances, whatever was said in the dressing room had the desired effect as our lads upped their performance in the second half kicking 9 great points. Outstanding performances in a squad where everyone performed admirably were Jonathan Clarke(brisean an duchas) & Gavin Tucker in defense and up front Buddy O’Leary & Jamie Doolan. Team& Scorers; Alan Kelly, Jonathan Clarke, John Bartlett, Diarmuid O`Donovan, Barra O`Connell, Michael Moloney, Gavin Tucker, Ian Howard, Johnny Buckley(0-1), Ian Howard (0-3), Philip O`Connor(0-01). Coiste na Og Indoor Hurling

Round 2 of the indoor hurling season saw a much improved performance from the Dr Crokes boys.  The additional training sessions saw captain Conor Fitzgerald and his team demonstrate a higher level of skill.
The first game against Kenmare was fast-flowing and Kieran O'Donnell slotted home two well-taken goals.  Jonathon Cleary and David Leacy, whose uncle donned the purple and gold of Wexford, played outstanding games.  The next game brought Ignatius Curtain, who scored a dinger of a goal, and Brendan O'Grady to the fore.  The final game, with Kilgarvan, was Crokes best performance.  Anthony Keogh gave us a great start with a brilliant goal from out the court.  However, Kilgarvan just pipped us at the end to take the game.
This round concludes the grading stages and the real competition starts next Saturday when finals take place.  The Dr Crokes boys will be hoping to follow the Under 12 and Under 10 teams, who have already brought home medals.  Training continues on Friday at 6 o'clock.
U.14 girls on Sat. last at Direen we played our old rivals Legion we were victorious on a scoreline of 4-10 to 3-06. outstanding for Dr. Crokes  were Emma Cronin, Blaithin Cronin, Edel Cronin, Sophie Daly, Rheanne O`Shea, and Megan Buckley.

E.K.S.L. with a very weakened team we had a victory over Glenflesk on Sun. last. Highlights was a sterling performance from Ambrose O’Donovan. Shane Doolan & James Jones dominated proceedings from the back. After leading 0-06 to 0-04 at the break we ran out winners on 1-11 to 0-09 scoreline. U14 Indoor Hurling

After the under 10s and under 12s performing so well in their indoor hurling campaigns, it was time for the under 14 team to step up to the mark.  The occasion was the South Kerry five-aside indoor league.

This was the first time Dr Crokes have fielded an under 14 hurling team in any competition and the six players who took to the floor did themselves and the Club proud.  Some players were unavailable on the day, but those who were gave fine displays of hurling.  Up front, Kieran O’Donnell fired in two great goals along with a fine score from Paul Clifford and a screamer from Anthony Cronin.  Conor Fitzgerald was in great form, playing very strongly as usual.  Ignatius Curtain, as always was a rock in defense and in goal.  Brendan O’Grady gave one of his best hurling displays and must be a player to look out for during the year.  While the results did not go our way, we have much to look forward to over the coming weeks.

Training is on Friday nights in St Brendan’s gymnasium at 6.00pm until 7.00pm.

Commiserations: to St. Brendan’s on their loss by the narrowest of margins to Tralee CBS in Frewn Cup. Dr. Crokes players on panel Fionn Fitzgerald, Philip O’Connor, David (Buddy) O’Leary, &  Shane O’Neill.

Billy Duggan R.I.P. Dr. Crokes Club was stunned on March 3rd. when word filtered through of the sudden death of Billy Duggan. Billy, was secretary of the club in 1987/1989 he was also served as a delegate to East Kerry Board and was active in the Social club in a number of capacities most notably in the recruitment of spot prizes for the annual shindig. Billy had a long family tradition, one which he was extremely proud of with the Dr. Crokes club, his father Frank was a member of the successful 1949 Junior team and his late grandfather Dinso Hurley a former President of the club was goalkeeper on the Kerry team defeated by Dublin in 1923 All Ireland Final(played in 1924), and Billy himself was no slouch of a defender in his own playing days. During his administrative era Billy was a stickler for the rules and regulations and could quote the T.O. and local bye-laws virtually verbatim. Many a late night debate finished with Billy’s advice to make sure you sign your name in Irish.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

As a mark of respect the Annual Social & Weekly Lotto draw were postponed.

South Kerry U 12  indoor hurling blitz.
The finals of the South Kerry U 12  indoor hurling blitz  took place on Saturday  Feb 25th
and Dr Croke's  were drawn against  Kilgarvan, Kenmare & Dingle.
The winners of the blitz are the team that accumulate the most points from their 3  games.
Our first game against Kenmare  set the tone for the whole day and  our lads were
well up for the finals. The constant training over the winter period showed and  thanks to some
great leadership from captain , Anthony Keogh who was dominating the mid field sector and
was ably assisted by Aodan Burns meant that Dr Croke's were well on their way to victory by
half-time.  In our forward line both Alex Goggins and John L Ivory were "on fire"  and  proved a lethal partnership. In the second half we gave our subs a chance to prove their worth and they did not disappoint us. We eventually ran out easy winners and then it was onto play Kilgarvan.  This game went along similar lines and thanks to some great goalkeeping by Graham Fleming and sterling defending by Cian O'Lionard and Jonathan Cleary, Kilgarvan found goals very hard to come by. However our forwards  were finding the net  and
Micheal Burns, David O'Connor and Michael O'Shea  made their contributions to the victory when called upon to do so.  In our final game against Dingle the plan was to continue  on our winning streak and obtain maximum points and clinch the title. Everything went according to plan and the back - up  of the "fresh legs" on the bench
proved decisive. Daniel Healy,Caolan O'Donoghue and Chris Buckley  made good contributions when introduced to insure a runaway victory  by 6 goals.  This was a great victory  by all of  the panel  and to round off a fantastic day for these up and coming hurlers, our captain Anthony Keogh not alone lead his team to overall victory but he was also voted "Player of the Tournament " , a well deserved accolade.
The team was:- G Fleming, C O'Lionard, J Cleary,A Burns,A Keogh, J L  Ivory,A Goggins,M Burns, D O'Connor,C Buckley,D Healy,CO'Donoghue,M O'Shea, L Byrnes.  The  mentors  were  Niall Keogh, Timmy Hourigan & John Ivory.
Note :-  U 10 & U12 hurling will recommence outdoors in about a month's time but for now.......enjoy the break !!!

Congratulations to Kevin Sheahan son of former player Kieran and grandson of the legendary Donie who played at no. 8 on the Irish U19 Rugby Team last weekend against Wales.

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery to Fergus Moroney who was recently hospitalized.
