March Reports 2008

26/03/08

Dr. Crokes 1-17 Gneevegulia 2-05 Dr. Crokes opened their 2008 co. league programme with a convincing win over Gneevegulia.

Played at Fitzgerald Stadium Crokes with the aid of a strong breeze were first to score with a Kieran O’Leary free in the second minute, Brian Looney added another in the 5th. Scores were hard to come by with both sets of forwards guilty of poor shooting.

Crokes gradually begun to get on top with Eoin Brosnan & Johnny Buckley dominating midfield proceedings and with plenty of supply going to the forwards they slowly found their shooting boots. 2 quick points in the 14th minute by Jamie Doolan & Buckley stretched their lead, further points by O’Leary (2) Doolan and Eanna Kavanagh to a solitary point for Gneevegulia in the 28th minute left the half time score 0-08 to 0-01.

On the resumption, Buckley opened proceedings with a well-taken effort in the first minute. Gneevegulia replied with a Donie O’Connor minor. Further points from Brosnan & Doolan stretched Crokes advantage and Shane Doolan following a typical passing move finished to the net in the seventh minute.

Gneevegulia struck back with a R. McAuliffe goal in the 12th minute when the Croke defence was caught flat-footed when failing to clear. Edmund O`Sullivan for Crokes and M. Murphy for Gneevegulia exchanged points. Crokes stretched their advantage with further points from O’Leary and Doolan (J), after another defensive blunder P.J. Murphy finished a powerful shot to the Crokes net giving goalkeeper no chance in the 18th minute leaving the score 1-14 to 2-03.

As the game trundled on to its conclusion further points by Buckley (2) and O`Leary  were answered by O`Sullivan & Murphy (M) for G.gulia.

Team K. Cremin, K. McMahon, L. Quinn, M. Moloney, B. Moriarty, B. McMahon, G. Tucker, E. Brosnan (0-1), J. Buckley (0-04), B. Looney (0-01)  E. Kavanagh (0-01), S. Doolan(1-00), E. OSullivan (0-01), K. O`Leary (0-05), J. Doolan()-04), Subs: J. Payne, D. Casey, I. Howard.

South Kerry Hurling: Kilgarvan 2-13 Dr. Crokes 1-09 at Beaufort on Sunday last Kilgarvan defeated the  Crokes hurlers in the deferred 2007 South Kerry Hurling Final. This was Crokes first outing of the year challenge or otherwise and team trainers Timmy Hourigan and Gen Doherty along with selectors Cain O Toole and John Lenihan were more than happy with the team performance. The team has been training for the past 4 weeks and to run a very fit Kilagarvan team who are playing in Div 1 of the Co League and who are just off the back of a very successful run in the Munster Junior Hurling Championship, losing narrowly to Fethard of Tipperary, was a very successful effort. Basically the difference between the teams was that Crokes ran out of steam in the last 10 mins at which point they were level pegging.

Crokes led by 3 point to 1 with scores from Keith Curtin and Jim Kennedy 2. Kilgarvan then hit us with a trademark Mike Foley goal from a free, which saw them lead by 1-3 to 3 points after 15 mins. Crokes dominated the play form here to half time with Jim Kennedy scoring 3 and Patrick Landers 1 point from frees and play and Tom Murphy breaking up numerous Kilgarvan attacks ably assisted by Kevin Landers and David Coughlan. John Bergin and Keith Curtin outplayed their opponents in this half. Half Time Crokes 0-7   Kilgarvan 1-4

Crokes got  a great boost on the restart when Jim Kennedy goaled from a free.

Another Jim Kennedy point saw Crokes lead by 4 points after 7 mins. With both teams totally committed there were wides on both sides but then with the wind growing Kilgarvan and Mike Foley began to find their range and scored 3 unanswered points. Crokes lead was down to point after 15 mins. Substitute Martin O Shea scored an excellent point to restore a 2 point cushion.

Kilgarvan equalized with 10 mins to go and were now dominating the breaking ball and creating space. They went ahead with 5 mins to go and then a fortuitous goal enabled them run out 6 point winners.

Overall it was great display from Crokes. As well as those mentioned Denis McCarthy played very well in goal and Gary Landers did his usual marshalling of the full back line. Overall the defence was heroic until tiring near the end. In the forward line Diarmuid Lane, Mike O Keefe, Patrick  Landers and Liam Moloney ably assisting the excellent Jim Kennedy.

Team: Denis McCarthy, Paul Griffin, Gary Landers, Mike Murphy, David Coughlan, Tom Murphy, Kevin Landers, John Bergin, Keith Curtin, Diarmuid Lane, Jim Kennedy, Mike O Keefe, Liam Moloney, Patrick Landers, Davie Cotter. Subs Shane Mooney, Brendan O Donovan, Martin O Shea

Training continues on Monday and Friday nights at the Crokes pitch.

New members always welcome.

Coiste na Og: Coiste na nOg: U6 - U8 - U10 is growing from strength  to strength, the numbers are growing by the week, at this stage we would like to thank all coaches who have given up their time for the good of the club, also all the officers who work tirelessly behind the scenes.  Easter Camp on March 26 - 27 - 28th.
U12's start cleaning you boots you back in action n next week.  Fixtures for U12 not at hand yet, games commence at the end of April.
On Easter Saturday, Dr Crokes U14 hurlers participated in the county

qualifying blitz for the 2008 Feile na Gael in Killorglin.

Our first games was against the fancied Kenmare/Kilgarvan combination.

This was a good battle with some nice hurling and the Crokes lads showed that

they had not lost any of their basic skills after the winter lay-off.  Crokes were first to score thanks to a fine point by Aodhan Burns. A few more points were exchanged  before Kenmare/Kilgarvan eventually broke down our resolute defence for a goal before half - time to lead  on the score line of  1-2 to 0-3.

In the second half   against the wind  we played defiant hurling and  cut the margin to the minimum. However

in the last few minutes K&K got a goal to run out winners on the scoreline of  2-03 to 0-04.

Our second game against Duagh was a game for tight defensive work by both sides. Cian O'Lionaird was inspirational

as our captain from centre back and was ably assisted by Aodan Burns and Gearoid Coughlan. After some great

patience and hard work Gavin White found  the Duagh net with a sweet ground strike to leave it 1-0 to 0-2 at half time.

In the second half against the wind we were severly tested and passed with flying colours in most  instances. Our defence were heroic, John Courtney, Aaron Murphy and keeper John Ivory  were kept busy. Further outfield Laurence Byrnes, Tony Brosnan Jack Lenihan and Ivan Hurley  were working their socks off. Duagh found that points may do the business for them and they were

correct in the end. They won by the narrowest of margins on the scoreline of 0-05 to 1-01.Our final game was against Dingle with whom we have had some good tussles over the years at U12. This was no different.

From the start Crokes continued in the fighting spirit of the earlier games and did themselves and their jersey proud.Miceal Burns, Michael Owen Buckley and Gavin White displayed skills beyond their years and contributed handsomely

in the forwards. In defence Conor Mc Sharry and Caolan O'Donoghue were   leading by example and Dingle found it difficult to make headway. At half time the score was 0-03 to 0-02  in favour of Dingle. The second half  was  intense and after some hard work we drew level thanks to a fine point by Cian O'Lionaird. With time running out Dingle eventually found our net and added a few points to finish the stronger on the score of  1-05 to 0-04. Overall these performances give us optimism for the future and with  more training under our belts we will be well able to participate in the upcoming  games in the county league , etc.

Team :- J Ivory, A Murphy, G Coughlan, C McSharry, J Courtney, C O'Lionaird, C O'Donoghue,T Brosnan, A Burns, J Lenihan, L Byrnes, M BurnsG White, I Hurley, M O Buckley.

Sympathy to the Hurley family on the death of Johnny. Johnny captained our O’Donoghue Cup winning team of 1957 and played on five successful winning sides. Best remembered as a towering full-back he first came to prominence as a forward in his minor days where he was a prolific scorer and a master place kicker. Club chairman at the time Donie Sheehan explains the transfer to the full back position “in that period the goalkeeper did not kick out the ball and we needed someone with a long and reliable kick-out; we knew from his minor days that Johnny was a great dead ball kicker” and for years he commanded the square. He wore the Kerry jersey with distinction playing with the Juniors on a number of occasions.  To John Payne on the death of his grandmother Mrs. Dwyer Ar dheis De go raibh a nanamcha dilis

Congratulations to former minor player Ross Road native Seamus O’Connor and Rose O`Shea who tied the knot in Rome last weekend.
