28/05/08 County Hurling League Dr. Crokes 3-10 Kilmoyley 2-10 played at our own home grounds in Lewis Road on Thursday 22nd May last. The Dr. Crokes Senior Hurlers recorded a magnificent win over a very strong Kilmoyley Team. This win was badly wanting as we had been beaten in our first 3 league games but to be fair to the lads, this performance was coming as the team has been showing a significant improvement over the past few weeks. This game also marked the return of Jim Kennedy, Tony Mackay and Kevin Smith, all 3 made excellent conributions and it augurs well for the future and competition for places is hotting up. This game was very evenly balanced an eagerness to compete a get stuck in. Certainly in terms of work ethic and commitment, the players showed great character in this performance and hopefully with the return of injured players Patrick Landers, Seanie Morris, Brian Darcy, Mike O’Keefe, this team will eventually have a full panel to tackle the Intermediate Championship in July. It was tit for tat all through the first half with Jim Kennedy marking his return with 1-1 and Tony Mackay scoring 2 great points. Score @ half time was Crokes 2-4 to Kilmoyley 1-7. In the second half, Kilmoyley stepped up a gear as they had many of their Senior team included and they struck for 3 points in a row. However, Crokes fought back and the introduction of Johnny Dunphy who scored 2 excellent points from long range helped Crokes get the upper hand. John Cagney was again inspiring and confident in goals and it is great to see him back in action. His distribution in tight situations was excellent, combing well with his full backline. Gary Landers was again a tower of strength at full back and great credit to Tim Hourigan and Brendan Keogh for slotting at cornerback and turning in sound displays. The half-back line played very well indeed with Tom Murphy again controlling matters in the pivotal position ably assisted by Keith Curtin and Kevin Smith. Kevin is proving in the last 2 displays that his best position is wing-back and Kevin Smith’s speed and competitiveness is being noted also. The midfield partnership of Captain, Kevin Landers and David Coughlan is working out well. Both are tremendously strong and courageous players and both well capable of being man winners in their own right and contributing a few points in every game.
Up front, Barry O’Grady at centre-forward competed very well and showed commitment and very effective in this position. On the wing John Bergin showed plenty of skill and ability and took 3 nice points in the second half. Well done to Dave Cotter also on the other wing who put in a huge effort all through. The inside forwards, thanks to the return of scoring ace Jim Kennedy were a threat all through and Tony Mackay for the first match back with Crokes on over a year showed great strength and got 2 fantastic points. Liam Moloney also is adding an extra dimension in the corner and is showing a great appetite for the game. Johnny Dunphy was introduced 10 mins into the second half and made the trip from Youghal worth it, throwing over 2 superb points. All in all this was a great team effort and trainers Gene Doherty and Tim Hourigan can take great encouragement from this performance. Our next game is Wednesday 28th May at home to Ballyheighue commencing @ 7:30 sharp. Training continues on Monday and Wednesday nights @ 8:00. New players welcome. It was great to see our U-12 team also beat Kilmoyley in the Division 2 League beforehand and they also turned in a wonderful display that earned huge praise from Kilmoyley and Kerry Senior Player Ian Brick afterwards. He said he was hugely impressed with our U-12 hurlers and encouraged to keep it up. COISTE NA OG Co. u12 hurling league, in the second game of the county U12 hurling league, we played Kilmoyley at Lewis Road. After the disappointment of losing the first game to Ardfert, our lads wanted top put the record straight and they set about that from the first whistle. Powered at midfield by the return of Micéal Burns and with good assistance from Jack Lenihan, Gavin White, Daniel O’Brien, Chris Doncel and Darren O’Doherty our lads were into their stride very quickly. Playing into stiff wind, Darren O’Doherty opened the scoring with a goal and this was followed by a few points from Miceal Burns and Jack Lenihan. Our defence were in a mean mood and Aaron Murphy was a revelation in goals. At half time we were ahead by 2-03 to 0-02. The second half was a show of nice hurling from both sides but with Crokes getting the scores. Goals from Fergal O’Donoghue and Oscar O’Connor and points from Chris Doncel and Billy Courtney kept us well ahead. At the end, the final score of 4-06 to 2-04 was a just reward for the great team effort from the entire panel. U12 On Saturday last, 24th May 2008, 36 young hurlers from Dr. Crokes traveled by bus to participate in an invitational Inter-Club Hurling Blitz in Newtownshandrum, Co. Cork. This was an under 10/11 social event and we availed of the opportunity to bring along an under 8/9 team also to play Newtownshandrum in an exhibition game to commence proceedings. This was a most successful day and everybody enjoyed the experience. In the U-10/11 blitz, there were 8 teams in all, Newtownshandrum (Cork), Mungret (Limerick), Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin), Six-Mile-Bridge (Clare), Newcastlewest (Limerick), Na Piarsaigh (Cork), Clonakilty Rossmore (Tipperary) and Dr. Crokes being the Kerry representatives. There were 2 groups of 4 and we were pitted against Newcastlewest, Na Piarsaigh and Clonoulty Rossmore in Group 2. This was indeed an enormous task for our young hurlers to compete with some of these clubs renowned for hurling tradition and excellent juvenile structures. But did we rise to the challenge! The entire panel hurled out-of –their skin all day and put in huge performances. We started very well in our opening game V Newcastlewest and beat them comprehensively 1-6 to 0-0. Jack Lenihan scoring 0-5 (2 points from play ) and Daniel O’Brien 1-1 (all from play). In our second game, we had a very tough battle with Na Piarsaigh of Cork. To say we surprised them was an understatement – hurlers from Kerry taking on our “boys from Fair Hill” – how dare they? Well, we certainly did and we got stuck in straight away and let these boys from the city know that we intended business. Our Crokes boys showed great bottle and will to win and were really up for the contest. All these games were 15-a side and full rules included so therefore our lads were allowed solo. This gave them a new lease of life and our fast skillful hurlers were well able to mix it also when they “had to”. The match ended 1-1 a piece in a very tightly contested game and I think Na Piarsaigh were relieved to get a draw in the end. We then took a deserved break for 10/15 minutes for a few refreshments and more importantly rest because we were sore but proud after our tough battle with Na Piarsaigh. In our last Group match we played Clonoulty Rossmore (Tipperary) another famed hurling stronghold. We started poorly in this game as we were tiring but these Tipp boys could hurl also. We finished 3 points down at half-time 1-2 to 2 points but things changed dramatically. Talk about great timing! Our 3 “Celtic Stars” Michael Burns, Christopher Doncel and Darren O’Doherty who had just won the “Kerry Cup” with Killarney Celtic in Listowel at 11.00 that morning had made the trip over to join us, so we immediately gave them a taste of the action. This turned things around in our favour and great goals by Michael Burns and Chris Doncel helped us win this game by 5 points. So we finished the group with 5 points out of 6 – tied for first place in our Group. We qualified from our Group to play Kilmacud-Crokes of Dublin in the final match and again with all the talk of the wonderful juvenile structure and work being done over the past years in Dublin, this was going to be a huge task again. But again we responded and played some great hurling to win this match by 4-5 to 1-2. Scorers – Michael Burns (1-3), Jack Lenihan (2-0), Dylan O’Sullivan (1-0), Daniel O’Brien (0-2). James McAuliffe was our goalkeeper all through having also played in the U-8/9 game before the blitz. James acquitted himself well indeed and can feel very happy with his performances. Aaron Murphy was a tower of strength at full-back and is turning in some excellent performances lately. Both Conor McSherry and Michael-Owen Buckley played very solid all through and are tough nuts to crack at cornerback. The half-time line of Gavin White, Daniel O’Brien and Mark O’Shea played excellent hurling all through and are forming quite a formidable line of defence. Jack Lenihan & Dylan O’Sullivan formed a new mid-field partnership, combining very well together and both contributing great scores. Dylan 1-1 in his first hurling games ever and Jack finishing with combined (3-8) in all of the games. Up front, Jack Murphy slotted in very effectively at centre-forward – pushing his weight around and making his presence felt, Jason O’Brien and Lauren McCarthy doing good work on the wings and inside Oscar O’Connor, David Harnett and Killian Fleming worked very well together and gave their all. Denis Fleming and Mark Harnett also contributed very well in all the games and the arrival of our 3 “Celtic Stars” gave our panel a welcome boost and we could afford to give some of them a well deserved break. All in all, this was a wonderful experience and great credit goes to the Newtownshandrum Club for hosting a superbly run event. The Club laid on a fabulous grounds and the ladies committee supplied wonderful refreshments, drinks for all participants and supporters. It was heartening to see numerous loyal parents of the Crokes players attending this event and great credit does to them for letting their kids enjoy occasions like these. Well done again to these fantastic bunch of young hurlers from Crokes. Our plan is to keep them together and avail of all the opportunities to play out-side opposition as much as possible. They certainly will improve and compete better if they keep this up. Well done to all concerned. All players U-8/9 and U10/11’s were presented with engraved medals by Ben O’Connor of Newtownshandrum and Cork afterwards and we were still back to watch the second half of the rugby match. Newtonshandrum Blitz They say that business success is built on the networking. The same can be said of sport. John Lenihan’s contacts with his home Club of Newtownshandrum opened the door for an invite for Dr Crokes young hurlers to a very prestigious tournament in Newtown. Eight of the top Clubs in Munster and Leinster were invited to participate and on the road to Newtown mentors John Lenihan, Danny Harrington and Matt O’Neill wondered if they had put their young charges into a cauldron for which they were not prepared for. However, they need not have feared at all. The boys and girls from Dr. Crokes met every challenge put their way. The day started with a challenge game between the under 8/9 team from Dr Crokes and their counterparts from Newtownshandrum. The Crokes players were a bit flat after their bus journey up to this Cork haven of hurling. The local lads got off to a terrific start and slotted home a few early goals to win the first period where ground hurling only was allowed. Lifting and striking was allowed in the second period and the Crokes girls and boys found their rhythm. They battled hard and levelled the scoring at the end of period two at four goals to each side. The final period was full hurling. The increased skill levels suited the Dr Crokes team. Each player gave their all and battled hard to hammer up a score of 2-1 to Newtown’s 2-0. The end result was 6-1 to 6-0 in favour of Dr Crokes. This was a huge success for this fine young team in their first game outside of Kerry. The future augurs well for Dr Crokes hurling. (home) PARTYNITE Well what can be said, this was our second event and WOW did it work out well. 400 girls and boys attended the venue on last Friday night and again they expressed themselves in a manner in which is to be held in high esteem. They did exactly as they should, they enjoyed themselves and we Dr. Crokes, Legion and Spa are very proud to provide the opportunity for this to happen, for too long the media was negative but let me tell you that with our clubs support all these people are enjoying growing up and living as they should be allowed to do. We would like to thank the following for all their help and assistance; Killarney Gardai, Killarney Racecourse, The Order of Malta, Ros Printing and of course the Whitegates Hotel for allowing us to run a mineral bar which allowed more monies to be allocated to charities. From the start the 3 clubs hoped to make a difference and by all accounts we have done so. There is more to GAA Clubs than medals and cups, as all together we can make a difference for our youths and give them a chance to enjoy themselves safely in what we hope is an enjoyable night life. Life is for living so enjoy it. KING IN A KINGDOM OF KINGS well known club stalwart Fr. Played at Austin Stack Park on Saturday last Dr. Crokes sponsored by O’Brien’s Sandwich Bars overcame a spirited O’Rahillys challenge with a magnificent team performance to set up a meeting with Rathmore in round 1. Forced to lineout without the injured Kieran O’Leary this was a wonderful game of football played at breathtaking pace. We opened the scoring in the first minute with a Colm Cooper point, D. Moran instantly replied for our opponents and the same player added a second in the fifth minute, Jamie Doolan who tattooed a number of markers throughout the game regained parity in the seventh minute, “they say goals win games” “cometh the hour cometh the man” in the eight minute Colm Cooper closely marshalled on the edge of the square lobbed the keeper to give us 1-02 to 0-02 lead and he stretched it further with a minor after ten minutes. Four unanswered points by our opponents left the sides level after sixteen minutes. In the 20th minute, Cooper was hauled to the ground and expertly put the resultant penalty beyond the goalkeepers reach. We began to dominate in all sectors at this stage and further points from B. Looney, S. Doolan, J. Buckley, C. Cooper(free) and J. Fleming replied by two minor by B.J. Keane and Quill left the half time score 2-08 to 0-08. On the re-start O’Rahillys were quick out of the blocks and narrowed the gap with three quick points Shane Doolan with a point in the eight minute after some wonderful inter change with Jamie stretched our lead and quickly followed by a goal from Brian Looney left us leading 3-09 to 0-11. this seven point lead was short lived when after a blatant push on one of our defenders and no free forthcoming O’Rahillys finished to net to throw the game back in the melting pot. T. Walsh with a point narrowed the gap; a long-range effort by James Fleming gave us some breathing space. All exchanges at this stage were eagerly contested and further points by Molloy and Quill in the 22nd minute that proved to be their last score closed the gap to two. Johnny Buckley with a good score stretched our lead and substitute Daithi Casey with a magnificent point from close to the sideline-ended proceedings. A tremendous performance by everyone concerned. Hurling League St Brendan’s 2-09 Dr.Crokes 0-9 Played in Ardfert on Wed 14th May Crokes hurlers lost their 3rd league match in arrow when going down to St Brendan’s by 6 points. The score line was flattering as the a strong Crokes side still minus the services of ace scorer Jim Kennedy dominated for long periods of the game due to the dominance of our midfield pairing Dave Coughlan and Kevin Landers and a rejuvenated Brian Darcy at centre forward. In a wasteful first half where Crokes faced the breeze we had 8 wides with some of those coming from close in frees, Brian Darcy happened to be our only scorer with a point from play in the 22nd minute. St Brendan’s made it hard work for Crokes when scoring 2 goals in that half one a very dubious square ball. After all Crokes hard work we trailed at half time on the scoreline of 2-6 to 0-1. Strangely the side had played well but not taken their chances and Gene Doherty reiterated this at half time saying the game was still in the boiling pot The second half was all Crokes as they scored 8 points and had some good goal chances saved by an alert St Brendan’s keeper. That second half was typified by Captain and Crokes man of the match Gary Landers who dominated the full back poisition all through the match with some strong play. He was ably assisted by John Cagney who seems to be as hungry as ever for the game, Mike Murphy, John Bergin and Keith Curtin who had his best game to date at wing back scoring 3 great points in that second half. Kevin Smyth played very well when introduced for his first game in over a year. Midfield continued to dominate with Kevin Landers catching some great ball and driving forwards. All the forwards played well in the second half including Johnny Dunphy who was introduced at half time having travelled from Youghal for the game, Diarmuid Lane, Liam Moloney, Brian Darcy and Patrick Landers who had a great second half until he retired injured with 5 mins to go. He had two a great shots blocked by the keeper, which could have made a big difference to the outcome. As it was Crokes having got with in 4 points could not get those vital goals as St Brendan’s tacked on 2 late points to give an unfair reflection on proceedings. The game marked a return by Seanie Morris who has been out injured for over a year now. Team: John Cagney, Mike Murphy, Paul Griffin, Barry O Grady, Tom Murphy, Keith Curtin, Kevin Landers, Dave Coughlan, Liam Moloney, Brian Darcy, John Bergin, Diarmuid Lane, Patrick Landers and Seanie Morris. Subs Used: Johnny Dunphy, Kevin Smyth Our next game is at home to Kilmoyley on Thurs 22nd May 7.30pm Training continues at Crokes pitch on Monday and Fridays at 8.opm sharp. New players welcome. COISTE NA OG U14 We travelled to Ardfert on Thursday night to play the local side in a play off to see who would qualify for the county league semi- final. Considering that we finished on the same number of points as Ardfert as well as having beaten them by a point in the league, a close evenly contested game was expected. However, Ardfert were more focused from the word go and lead by 8 points after 10 minutes. We faced an uphill struggle at this stage and while in other matches when we found ourselves in a similar position we were able to turn things around, it was not to be the case on this occasion. Credit to Ardfert they never dropped the tempo and they fully deserved their victory. We will now regroup and start our preparations for the East Kerry league. This team is much better than what we showed in Ardfert and if the team puts in the same efforts as they did earlier in the year, there is no reason why we cannot get our season back on track and finish on a high. Our next match is against Kenmare on the 26th of May. Team:M. Willis, E O` Connor, J. Courtney, M. Ryan, C. O` Lionard, A. Burns. Lyne, G. Coughlan, R. O` Connor, M. O` Leary, N. O` Riordan L. Championship round 1 Dr. Crokes v Rathmore Tuesday May 27th Fitzgerald Stadium @ 7.15pm. 14/05/08 CO. LEAGUE DIV. 1 Dr. Crokes 3-17 St. Michaels Foilemore 0-12. Dr. Crokes maintained their unbeaten record in Div. 1 Co. League with a home win. The score line is not a true reflection as Foilemore battled bravely throughout especially in the opening half when they troubled Crokes defence on numerous occasions. Crokes opened the scoring in the first minute when Jamie Doolan finished to the net. Colm Cooper took a quick free to Johnny Buckley and Doolan was left the easiest of tasks. Buckley with a 45 and Brian Looney with a point stretched their lead in the opening 3 minutes. Foilmore missed a glorious chance in the 4th when midfielder S.O`Connor shot wide from a good position. Two pointed frees from Ronan O’Connor in the ninth and tenth minute narrowed the gap. Colm Cooper with a free and S. Fogarty exchanged points at the end of the first quarter. Foilmore were beginning to gain dominance in the midfield exchanges and further points from R. O’Connor & B. Kelly free sandwiched a Jamie Doolan point, B. Looney tacked on a further Dr. Crokes point, Foilmore replied with 2 James O`Shea points to narrow the gap 1-05 to 0-07 by the 27th minute. A Johnny Buckley and a B. Looney point stretched Dr. Crokes lead 2-06 to 0-07 at the half time whistle. On the resumption, Crokes introduced Brian McMahon to Centre-back and brought Johnny Buckley to midfield and both players had a considerable influence on proceedings. Quick points from Looney and McMahon stretched Crokes lead C. Granville replied for Foilmore and when Eoin Brosnan with a trademark goal in the 13th minute when put in possession by Cooper this game was finished as a contest. Foilmore had points from James O`Shea D. King and S.O`Connor Further points by G. Tucker(2), J. Payne J. Buckley C.Cooper, and J. Doolan left Crokes run out deserving winners. Team; A. Kelly, K. MINOR DIV. 1 S/FINAL Dr. Crokes 2-15 Dingle 2-09. we gave our best display in this competition and ran out six point winners. Even though we well deserved our win we were flattered at winning by six points. We started well and had the first two points in the opening minutes. Dingle quickly equalised and went in front in the 13th minute. Both teams swapped points in the next two minutes. The second quarter we took over and scored 1-04 without reply. The goal clinically finished by T.J.Cronin to leave us leading at the break 1-07 to 0-04. On the resumption we stretched our lead with a further point but our opponents hit back with a goal to narrow the gap. Shane O’Neill with a goal and a point stretched our lead to eight points with 20 minutes remaining. In the next five minutes Dingle had three points from frees followed by a goal to reduce the lead to two points. We had to dig deep for the last quarter and three unanswered points put us five points in front with 10 minutes remaining. Our opponents had two points to reduce the lead to a single score with four minutes remaining. We finished strongly with three unanswered points for a wonderful victory. Goalkeeper and Captain had an outstanding game, our defenders tackled and defended well with the central players P.J. Lawlor and Fionn Fitzgerald outstanding. We did very well at midfield even though we came out second best in the aerial battles. The work ethic of our attack was very good but one has to single out Shane O’Neill and T.J.Cronin who scored 2-08 between them. Team: David Neeson, Kieran Ward, P.J.Lawlor, Sean Coppinger, Conor O’Neill, Fionn Fitzgerald, Niall O’Connell, Daithi Casey (0-02), David O’Leary (0-02), Eoin Clifton, Jonathan Clarke, Timmy O’Donoghue (0-01), Keith O’Leary (0-02) T.J.Cronin (1-02), Shane O’Neill (1-06). Subs; Chris Brady, Joseph Keogh, Mark O’Donoghue. JUNIOR CO. LEAGUE Dr Crokes 1-12 Kerins O` Rahillys 2-9 In this our first outing the game finished in a draw. This was a disappointing conclusion as we were in control for the most of the game, but poor concentration at key moments in the game gave our opponents an opportunity to peg the score back and keep them in contact with us. Tommy” Bracker” Regan was in great form in the corner and scored a good goal but a knock on the head forced him to withdraw with concussion at half time. We had some good periods of play with excellent link up between players at times and this yielded some good points but as already stated we left O Rahillys back into the game. A big improvement is needed for the next outing. This competition was run off over a series of blitzes and in the final blitz; we played our way into the final after some great and brave hurling. Showing a good deal of improvement over the last few weeks, the confidence grew within the team and this county league is a just reward for their efforts. In the final against Crotta, the game was up for grabs until well into the second half. It was level at half - time however, Crokes had defended bravely against a stiff wind. In the second half captain Miceal Burns lead by example and scored a great goal and a point. Aaron Murphy, Daniel O’Brien, Gavin White, Jack Lenihan and Billy Courtney ably assisted him. Showing great spirit and camaraderie Crokes hurled well and defended strongly. The scores came and in the finish the score line read 3-03 to 1-00 in our favour. In truth we had heroes all over the pitch and the strength on the subs bench was a telling factor in this memorable win....Well done to all concerned. U12 Co. League Div. 1
Dr. Crokes 2-4 Dingle
2-12 On Sunday last Dingle were the visitors to Lewis Road, in the
first half we battled hard while Dingle had the majority of the
possession. The score at half time had us 5 points down. On the
restart Dingle kicked some lovely points but we struck back with a
quick goal and 2 points to leave just 4 points in the game. Dingle
however, went on to finish the stronger on a score of 2-4 to 2-12.
While this was not a great performance by us, it was by no means a
disaster at U12 level. It is about playing football and enjoying
it. Again, we were able to use 20 players; overall, it was a good
learning experience. PARTYNITE Again we along with our neighbours Spa & Legion will be organising this event on May 23rd as the last event was a huge success. We are also trying to add a foam party into this great night out, again it is 15 - 17 year olds age limit. LOTTO there was no winner of the jackpot of €6,900 on Mon.
