May Reports 2006

31/05/06

EKSL. Dr. Crokes 2-12  Spa 1-08. we were comfortable winners of EKSL played in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sun. last. In a game that never rose above pedestrian levels 2 first half goals by Brian Looney  & Andrew Kenneally was the stepping stone to our success. Spa rallied in the second half and reduced the deficit to 3 points but a flurry of unanswered points sealed the issue. Team; Kieran Cremin Shane Doolan Luke Quinn James Cahillane Batt Moriarty Eoin Brosnan Eanna Kavanagh Kieran Brosnan Ambrose O`Donovan(0-02) James Fleming  (capt.)(0-01) Andrew Kenneally (1-01) Brian Looney (1-01) Kieran O`Leary (0-03) Edmund O`Sullivan Colm Cooper(0-04) Subs: John Payne Nicholas Murphy.

Minor Co. League Div. 1 : We relinquished our Minor Co. League Crown to Kerins O`Rahillys going down by the narrowest of margins AET on a score line of 2-14 to 3-10. in Austin Stack Park on Thurs. last. It was a tremendous game of football played at a breathtaking pace by two hugely committed teams who were a credit to their families and their clubs,  management of both sides must be highly commended for the part they played in the proceedings. This game had everything that is good in Gaelic Football, passion,  guts , determination, will to win, commitment, and pride in the jersey. Conceding a massive height and weight advantage O`Rahilly`s took full advantage in the first period of extra time and got the crucial goal which was the turning point but it is to eternal credit of our fellows they fought to the bitter end and narrowed the deficit to the minimum and were very unfortunate not to equalize at the death. A major talking point  afterwards was the sending off of the talismanic Jamie Doolan in normal time. This was a controversial and harsh decision and had a major bearing on the outcome of the game. We entered the game as complete under-dogs, but were prepared to give it our best shot, and we certainly did not disappoint our large band of supporters. Our fellows played themselves to a standstill and each and everyone can be very proud of their contribution. Our best performers on the night  were Michael Moloney, Barra O`Connell  Johnny Buckley, Philip O`Connor and man of the match Gavin Tucker. Team Alan Kelly, David O`Leary, John Bartlett, Fionn Fitzgerald, Barra O`Connell, Michael Moloney, Jonathan Clarke, Ian Howard (1-0) Gavin Tucker (0-04) ), Denis Galvin) Philip O`Connor(1-0) Johnny Buckley  (0-03) Shane O`Neill,  Ruairi Mangan (1-0), Jamie Doolan(0-03). Subs. Daithi Casey, Donal Cronin, Diarmuid O`Donovan.

EKJL S/ Final: We were annihilated  by Spa in the s/final of this competition. In a game in which we never left the starting blocks we played second fiddle in virtually all areas of the field to a very committed, determined  and well prepared side. While short a number of regulars through injury and exams it was really a lack luster performance by our fellows and only Tommy Ryan, James Cahillane, & Nicholas Murphy can be satisfied with their display.

Co. Junior League: We opened our account in this competition with a victory over Kerins O`Rahillys on Friday last. Played at Lewis Road we were short a number of players due to a variety of reasons but won comfortably on the night 1-11 to 0-04.best for us on the night were James Cahillane, Nicholas Murphy, Brian Looney, & Edmund O`Sullivan.

Hurling: Dr. Crokes 1-13 Abbeydorney  0-11. On Wed 24th May we produced our best display of the year in the final group B county league game by defeating Abbeydorney in a hard fought game at the Crokes pitch. Crokes stared well with a well take point from Barry O Grady after 2 minutes. Crokes had all the pressure but failed to add to this score during a good 5 minute spell. Abbeydorney found their feet and punished Crokes with point from frees to lead by 3 points after the first quarter. A pointed free by Barry O Grady in the 16 minute failed to ignite
the scoring and it was Abbeydorney who added 3 more points to lead 7 points
to 2 entering the final mins of the half. Crokes switched Seanie o Shea to
wing back and moved Seanie Morris up field to join the attack, a move that
added impetus to Crokes attack and they took over in the period adding 3
points from Fergal Clarke, Seanie Morris and Jim Kennedy to leave the score
7 points to 5 in Abbeydorney favour at the break.
A few firms words a half time saw Crokes continue their rich vein of form
and with captain Brian Darcy and Keith Curtin dominating the midfield
exchanges Crokes were level 8 points all on 15 mins Seanie Morris and Barry
O Grady (2) adding to Crokes tally. The Abbeydorney goalie was in superb
form making good saves from Jim Kennedy but in the 17 min an innocuous shot
by Adrian Brennan deceived the goalie and Crokes went into a lead they never
relinquished. Hurling with a bit passion and style Crokes added further
points from Jim Kennedy (2), Keith Curtin and Tim Hourigan (2) to finish out
deserving winners on a score of 1-13 to 0-11 to most enjoyable game by two
sporting teams
On the night all our players played well with Brian Darcy, Jim Kennedy and
Keith Curtin playing exceptionally well. The only disappointing note was the
dismissal of Adrian Brennan with a straight red practically on the final
whistle.

Crokes will have to wait now to see if they play quarter or semi final in
the knockout stages.

Coiste na Og: Our U11`s opened  their season in EKL.last week with a comprehensive victory over a gallant Rathmore side on a score line of 4-12 to 1-08. these young boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves many having their first competitive outing and their displays augurs well for the future.  U14 Hurlers:There was no game last week.  But this coming Friday we travel to Kilorglin to meet Laune Rangers.  This will be a tough game as both teams are well matched.

Preparations for Féile continue and good attendance at training every Tuesday and Friday has helped enormously.  Here are some more profiles of the Crokes Féile team.

U14 Girls are through to the final of the league after a very impressive win over Rathmore. Played in blustery conditions every player performed admirably particularly the defenders who were quick to block down the ball and not allow our opponents any leeway in the second half. The early exchanges were pretty even but the ability of our girls to get a number of scores in quick succession was the difference between the sides. Panel: Laura Moloney, Ciara O`Shea, Kelly Payne, Trish Murphy, Sophie Daly, Blathnid Cronin, Karena O`Leary, Rheanne O`Shea, Edel Croniin, Megan Buckley, Rebecca Galvin, Megan Kiely, Sarah Brosnan,Ellen Buckley, Laura Kelly, Emma Cronin, Arianne Kennedy, Caoimhe Bonner.

East Kerry Junior Q/Final  Dr. Crokes 1-05 Currow 0-06.Played at Lewis Road on Tues. 16/05/06 we reached the s/ final of this competition with a 2 point victory over Currow. To be truthful the standard of football was poor with both teams guilty of some appalling marksmanship. We opened the scoring with a point from David Looney in the 2nd minute but the forwards failed to capitalize on some good possession from midfield where Nicholas Murphy was dominating the exchanges. Currow settled and kicked 3 unanswered points, in the 20th minute Mike Nash blasted a thunderous  rebound to the net to  give us a narrow advantage. Currow added 2 more minors before the interval to lead by the slenderest of margins 0-5 to 1-01. We showed a marked improvement in the second half kicking 4 points, 2 a piece from David Looney & Rory O`Sullivan. the solitary Currow score came in the 29th minute  Best for Dr. Crokes on the night were Donal Kavanagh, James Cahillane, Tommy Ryan, and Barra O’Connell in defense, Nicholas Murphy in midfield while up front David Looney & Rory O`Sullivan were best. A marked improvement is required if we are to make further progress in this competition

Our rd.1 Co. Junior league game v Austin Stacks fixed for Fri. last was postponed due to the unavailability of a number of their players. They were involved with  their minors in co. league s/final.

In  the Senior Co. Championship we were drawn against Kenmare. A home fixture it will be played on the weekend of June 16th/17th/18th.

Co. Hurling league: Dr  Crokes Hurlers collected a badly needed brace of points on Wed. May 17th to keep their sights on the knockout stages by defeating Causeway 3-9 to 2-2. The game was originally fixed for Causeway but due to their pitch being waterlogged, the game was switched to the Crokes field. As a result Causeway fielded an under strength team and only offered token resistance to Dr. Crokes on the night. The highlight of the game was an impressive hat trick of goals by Jim Kennedy and some excellent point taking by Earl Tuohy.

While the team in general played well, one cannot read into the performance due the weakness of the opposition on the night and much sterner tests lie ahead. Training continues on Monday and Friday night at 7.30pm with our next game at home to Abbeydorney on the 24th May.

Team: John Cagney, Cain O Toole, Gary Landers, Paul Griffin, Shane Kavanagh, Tom Murphy, Seanie Morris, Brian Darcy (Capt), Keith Curtin, Adrian Brennan, Timmy Hourigan, Barry O Grady, Jim Kennedy, Tony Mackey, Earl Tuohy. SUBS John Ryan for Cian O Toole, Fergal Clarke, Dave Cotter

Coiste na Og; The under 14 hurlers travelled to Duagh last Friday without a few of their key players.  It was always going to be an uphill battle, as Duagh are unbeaten this season.  Then to make matters worse Senan Lavery, a titan in the Crokes defence, had to leave the pitch with an injury.  But to their credit, Dr Crokes took the hand they were dealt and played their hearts out.

Ignatius Curtin opened the scoring with a well-taken point from out the field and Bryan O’Shea followed up with a goal fired to net from a narrow angle.  However, Duagh proved too strong, although the Crokes boys never relented.

This team will travel to Cork for the weekend June 16-18 to participate in the Féile na nGael competition, the premier national club competition for under 14 year olds.  This will be a big occasion for these young players. Here are some of that team.

Ciarán O’Donnell, current captain of the under 14 team, plays at wing back.  Ciarán is 13 years old and is a first year student at St Brendan’s College.  He was on the Dr Crokes under 12 team that won the County League in 2004 and was on the recent St Brendan’s team that won the All-Ireland first year schools’ basketball competition.  Ciarán also plays golf and basketball.  His favourite footballer is Colm Cooper and his favourite hurler is DJ Ryan.

Graham Fleming is Dr Crokes goal-keeper, but also known to play on the full-farward line.  He is 12 year’s old and attends sixth class in St. Oliver’s school.  Graham also has a County league winner’s medal from 2002 for hurling and South Kerry indoor hurling honours.  A very active young man, he also plays golf, tennis, basketball, soccer and rugby.  His favourite footballer is Eoin Brosnan and hurler Donal óg Cusack.

Alex Goggin plays at full forward and is 12 years old.  He also attends sixth class in St Oliver’s school. Another member of the under 12 hurling County League winning team, Alex played a vital role.  Sports mad Alex likes to play golf, tennis, badminton, darts and soccer.  His favourite footballer is Colm Cooper and his favourite hurler is Henry Sheflin.

Senan Lavery is our last line of defence at full back.  He is 12 years old and attends first year at Milltown secondary school.  Senan has an under 12 County League hurling medal to match a similar medal he won with Dr Crokes for football.  A keen footballer and soccer player, Senan’s favourite footballer is Colm Cooper and in hurling he is a big fan of Cork’s Diarmuid O’Sullivan.

Our under 12 hurlers played their third county league game against Kenmare  on May 16th. While the end result  was not in our favour there were a lot of positives to be taken from the match . The most important of these being that  there is a bright future for our juvenile hurlers . We fielded a young team and they acquitted themselves well against a team that has won all their games  and we played them in their own pitch. Our established players showed the way and inspiring performances by Cian O'Lionard, Aodan Burns and Alex Goggins brought the best out in  all our players. Alex scored  four goals and posed a constant threat . The game was close and tight with scores even for long periods. Billy Courtney made an impressive debut in goal,  in defense Dan Healy, Jack Lenihan, Conor McSharry and Mark Buckley showed tremendous courage and skill. John Ivory and Aodan Burns supplied good possession at midfield and the supply was not wasted by Alex  Goggins, Micheal Burns, Caolan O'Donoghue and Chris Buckley.  In the end we were unlucky to lose by a narrow margin , however this performance gives great  hope for the future. Training continues on Mondays and Fridays at 7.00pm .

U12`s Team 1 defeated Austin Stacks on Sunday last. Played in Lewis Road we were victorious on a score line of 5-07 to 1-12 .Paul Clifford our goalkeeper made a return after injury. We were quick off the mark with goals in the first periof by Will Horan(2) and Gavin O`Shea. We led at the break 3-04 to 0-04. In the second half Stacks scored 4 points without reply to narrow the gap but goals from Gavin O`Shea & Tony Brosnan gave us a little breathing space. Best on the night were Johnny Courtney, Cian O`Lionaird, Lawrence Byrnes, Jason Lyne, in defense Niall O`Riordan Aodan Burns in midfield, while up front Will Horan, Gavin O`Shea, Gearoid Coughlan and substitute Tony Brosnan always posed a threat.

Team 2 drew with Austin Stacks on Sun. on a score line of 5-03 a piece. Played in blustery conditions these youngsters performed admirably on the night. Outstanding on the night were Jonathan O`Leary, Cillian O`Regan, Gary Murphy, Ollie Collins, Darren O`Doherty, Risteard Clifford & Shane Lyne

Team I were defeated by Laune Rangers on Wed. 17th. Played in stormy conditions our opponents started brightly and led 2-07 to 1-03 at the interval,  will Horan being the scorer of the goal. In the 2nd period a goal from Tony Brosnan brought us back into it and from there to the end it was nip and tuck. Laune Rangers held on to win by 2points. Team: McDara Willis, Eric O’Connor, Johnny Courtney, Keith Flynn, Damien Kerins, Cian O`Lionaird Jason Lyne, Niall O`Riordan, Aodan Burns, Lawrence Byrnes, Gearoid Coughlan, Gavin O`Shea, Tony Brosnan, Will Horan Mike Sexton.

Team 2 suffered a heavy defeat by Lispole played in inclement conditions at home, we were under pressure from the outset against a physically stronger Lispole side. Cillian Regan, Michael Burns, Conor Murphy, & Gary Murphy were our best performers on the night.

17/05/06

Minors We reached our 3rd  in a row Div. 1 Co. Minor League Final defeating Spa on a score line of 3-14 to 2-09(AET).  Played in Beaufort on Friday night last the differential of 8 points in the end would definitely flatter us and certainly not do any justice to our opponents. This was a tremendous game of football played by two committed teams who contested for every ball with tremendous gusto. Heart, guts, determination, will to win were there in abundance by both sides.  Scores were difficult to come by in the opening half due mainly to the dominance of defenders and we went in at the interval behind by a goal on a score line of 1-03 to 0-03. the Spa goal was an 18th minute penalty expertly converted by their centre forward Paul Cronin. On the resumption we scored 4 unanswered points inside the first 5 minutes to give us a slender lead but then scores seemed to dry up on both sides and by the twentieth minute it was level 0-9 to 1-06. each side score 3 points from there to the finish. Two tired teams that lined up for extra time and again the first period was nip and tuck and it was only our ability in the second period to take our  goal chances and our refusal to lie down that eventually won the day. A wonderful game of football played by two well prepared teams, pity there had to be a loser. On a night when all were heroes and missing the influential Ian Howard special mention must be made of the contributions of Fionn Fitzgerald, Barra O’Connell, David O’Leary Jonathan Clarke and man of the match Philip O’Connor. Team: Alan Kelly,  David O’Leary John Bartlett Fionn Fitzgerald, Barra O’Connell, Michael Moloney, Jonathan Clarke, Johnny Buckley, Gavin Tucker  (0-3), Denis Galvin (1-01), Philip O’Connor Michael McMahon, Shane O’Neill, (1-01), Ruairi Mangan(0-04), Jamie Doolan (1-05) (1-0 pen.) Subs: Donal Cronin Diarmuid O’Donovan. ( A  plea to the administrators of our games and one is aware of the constraints they are under at this time of year with exams looming and pressure to complete competitions  please endeavor to streamline the fixtures better, four of our starting fifteen had played an U16 championship s/ final the previous evening, one feels that competitions were players may overlap should not be played in such close proximity. Too many games burn out young players and rest is a vital component of their development.)

E.K.J.L. We were defeated by Spa in last weeks round on a score line of 1-06 to 0-06. we are due to play Currow in q/final on Tues. of this week.

Hurling; we were well beaten on our last competitive outing by Kilgarvan in the Co. League on a score line 2-11 to 0-06. We are due to play Causeway on Wed. of this week, home venue.

Ladies: Training for U16, Minor, & Senior Ladies every Wed. 7.00p.m. to 8.30p.m. & Fri. 7.00p.m. to 8.00p.m.

Coiste Na Og: U16 final Dr. Crokes 2-08 Spa 2-07 played in Fossa on Monday night an injury time point by substitute Cian Buckley earned us a dramatic victory which gave us 6 in a row East Kerry Championships. Trailing by 8 points with 9 minutes of the second half played our fellows dug deep to conjure up a victory. There resilience, will to win, and never say die attitude were the hallmarks of this success against a gallant Spa side. Driven on from midfield in the second half by the outstanding Jonathan Clarke ably assisted by captain Fionn Fitzgerald we whittled away at the Spa lead and goals from the penalty spot from Shane O’Neill and Mark O’Donoghue gave us the advantage with the end of normal time approaching but it is to Spa credit they leveled matters and looked like they would come out on top but our full back line of Joseph Keogh, Eoin Clifton, & Kieran Ward kept them at bay. Along with the aforementioned Daithi Casey, Keith O’Leary, T.J.Cronin all  made valuable contributions. We were forced to line out without the injured P.J.Lawlor which necessitated making a number of positional switches to the side. Team: David Neeson, Joseph Keogh Jonathan Clarke, Kieran Ward, Niall O’Connell, Fionn Fitzgerald, (capt.) Kieran O`Sullivan, Daithi Casey, Eoin Clifton, Alex O`Sullivan David O’Leary, T.J.Cronin, Keith O’Leary, Mark O’Donoghue Shane O’Neill sub: Cian Buckley. The cup was presented to the winning captain Fionn Fitzgerald and the wonderful Stephen Brosnan once again made the acceptance speech

U16  East Kerry S/final Dr. Crokes 2-14 Legion 2-11. this was the second occasion these sides met in competition in the last three weeks and again we came out on top. This game was always going to be cracker and punters were not disappointed. Played at a fast pace we led at the interval 2-05 to 1-04 thanks to two magnificent goals by Niall O’Connell and Daithi Casey. With ten minutes remaining the teams were level it was then that the true character of this team was shown and they finished strongly with 3 unanswered points. On the night Kieran Ward, Daithi Casey, David O’Leary, and substitute Keith O’Leary caught the eye,

Our U,8 & 10`s enjoyed a successful outing to Castleisland on Sat. last.

History will be made by our U14 hurlers who for the first time this year will compete in Feile. Further details to follow in the coming weeks.

E.K.J.L. We defeated Glenflesk in the latest round of this competition on a score line of 1-09 to 0-06 last Tuesday. Playing against the elements in the opening half we trailed at the interval by 0-05 to 0-01. everyone stepped up their performance in the second half and we ran out comfortable winners.

Minors: we completed our premlinary programme in this league with an away game against Ardfert on Friday last. Short a number of regulars and with qualification virtually guaranteed for the S/final management took the opportunity to give more game time to the younger members of the panel. On a night that was not suitable for good football we came away with a share of the spoils 0-07 apiece. Our best performers on the night were John Bartlett, Jonathan Clarke, Johnny Buckley, Gavin Tucker. S/Final v Spa fixed for Beaufort tonight (Friday) @ 6.30p.m.(extra time).

South Kerry/Duhallow  League :  Dr Crokes 1-5 Meelin 0-16
A weakened Crokes side lost to Meelin at home on Monday evening last.
Management were disappointed at he no show of some of our players with
others being unavailable due to injury. Crokes put up a great effort
despite their shortcomings and even lead at the quarter hour mark on a 1-3 to 0-3
score line, the goal coming from Earl Tuohy. Meelin took over in the last
10 mins of the half scoring 6 points to Crokes 1. Half time score 1-4 to 0-8.
The second half saw a continued effort by Crokes but a tiring forward line
could only manage 1 point from Barry O Grady.  Meelin added 8 more points in
this half to run out comfortable winners. While being under strength on
the night it was a worthwhile exercise for Crokes ahead of their County League
clash with Kilgarvan away on Wednesday night.
Outstanding on the night were Seanie Morris and Keith Curtin (second half)
with Seanie scoring one memorable point in the first half. All the backs
played well on the night and Crokes struggled in all other areas with Tony
Mackey and Barry O Grady (first half) being the best of the forwards
It would be great to have more support from Club Members and extra help is
 always appreciated.

Coiste Na Og: On Sat. last we hosted Listowel Emmet’s in a series of games at U`8, 9, 10, Boys and Girls. What a sight to behold as hardly a square metre of both fields went un-occupied and all the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Juvenile Hurling - U 12 County League.
On Friday May 5th, Dr Crokes U12 hurlers played Dingle at our home venue.  The wet evening was not conducive to open fast hurling however great credit was due to both teams for   the great and honest effort that was evident all over the pitch. Due to the weather conditions, scores were at a premium however Crokes  got on the scoreboard  with a lovely point  from Laurence Byrnes and that settled the team well. Cian O'Lionard was playing well  in defence and Matthew Moynihan was excellent in goals.  The teams were level at half-time after Crokes had a few goal chances saved . It continued as a close affair in the second  half until Dingle got a decisive goal  and that coupled with the  wind advantage allowed them to hold out for a 2 point victory.  This was an impressive performance by a young  under 12 Crokes team and it will give great encouragement to our players  for the future. team:- M Moynihan,D Healy,CO'Lionard,C McSharry,M O'Shea,J Lenihan,A Burns, C O'Donoghue, L Byrnes,J Ivory, M Burns, A Goggins.

Under 14 Hurling Last Sunday Dr Crokes were home to Austin Stacks and needed a win badly.  Stacks gave us the start we did not need by slotting an early goal.  However, the Crokes boys were patient and took their points.  Brian O’Shea banged over the first from way out followed by Aodhán Burns and two from Evan O’Donoghue to leave the score at 0-4 to 1-0 in favour of Dr Crokes. The second half saw the Crokes boys take charge of this game.  First Evan O’Donoghue fired a 13 meter free straight to goal.  Acting as captain for the day, Evan added three more goals to his tally, one from a sideline cut.  Conor Fitzgerald blasted one of the sweetest goals of the night to the back of the Stacks net.  This was followed by a goal from cousin David Leacy, the Wexford blood in his veins coming to the fore.  Alex Goggin was also on the score line by taking another great goal.  Cian McDermott was unlucky with some of his attempts on goal and provided a lot of ammunition for his team-mates.  During this blitz of goals Brian O’Shea scored an excellent point and Aodhán Burns banged over two to finish the game 7-7 to 1-0 in favour of Dr Crokes.  This score line shows the great job our backs did.  Graham Fleming and Matthew Moynihan in goal and Senan Lavery, Jonathan Cleary, Paul Clifford and Anthony Keogh, as usual played like tigers and closed down every attack.Lotto: The Jackpot on Sun. night last was not won, numbers drawn were 18, 20, 22, 24. 2 people matched 3 numbers each receive €250.
