25/11/09 O`DONOGHUE CUP Dr. Crokes 2-15 Legion 1-03. We had an emphatic victory over our opponents on Saturday last, from the opening seconds when Colm Cooper pointed the gulf in class was evident all over the pitch. Points from Cooper(f) Johnny Buckley and Jamie Doolan(2) stretched our lead after 12 minutes and when Cooper rattled the net in the 18th minute this game was over as a contest, further points from Cooper (2) Luke Quinn, Doolan and Kieran O’Leary left us leading at the short whistle 1-09 to 0-00. On the resumption we kept our foot on the pedal and continued to press home our advantage further scores from Cooper (2) Daithi Casey (1-01) Buckley, Doolan, and Fionn Fitzgerald stretched our advantage. Management had the luxury of withdrawing top class forwards Colm Cooper and Kieran O’Leary in the third quarter. While the home supporters were delighted with the victory neutrals in the large crowd were short changed such was the paucity of our opponents challenge. Our management team had an easy task in motivating the players and the result was the perfect riposte to the in-appropriate comments which appeared in the media and text messages in the previous fortnight. Another agonising 1 point defeat on Sunday last. Or preparations were not ideal, due to a combination of illness and injury, and having to make eight changes from the co. final upset the balance of the team. This was a game where we had the opportunities but did not avail, our opponents were far more committed especially in the opening half and richly deserved their half time lead of 5points. It took us a long time to get going but the introduction of Johnny Buckley, Daithi Casey and Shane Doolan midway through the second half gave us the impetus to up our game, we took the lead with 4 minutes remaining but a number of defensive errors resulting in two frees gave our opponents the opportunity to inch ahead which they duly did. EAST KERRY MINOR C/SHIP S/F Dr. Crokes 2-10 Legion 1-12. a penalty in the 22nd minute of the second half expertly converted by Chris Brady was the difference between the sides. This was a tremendous performance of wholehearted passion commitment and never say die by our lads despite between the underdog. The first half exchanges were fairly even until a fortuitous goal by our opponents gave them a 4point advantage, two Bryan O`Shea points narrowed the gap to leave the score at the interval 0-7 to 1-06. on the resumption our opponents increased the lead with two minors but Cian O’Neill was on hand to finish to the net to narrow the gap. It was nip and tuck all through the second half until Brady converted the aforementioned penalty that gave us the advantage, the closing moments were electrifying but our defence stood solid to close out the game and qualify for the final where our opponents will be Kilcummin. U13 GIRLS CO.CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Dr Crokes 6 03 Rathmore 3 06 If one ever looked for an example that goals win games then this was it. Olivia Dawson put Crokes ahead with a point after three minutes, however Rathmore hit back scoring 1 02 without reply. Dr Crokes responded well and the next four scores were all goals from Olivia Dawson (3) and Sheodhna O Donoghue (1) to leave the half time score 4 01 to 1 03. In the second half Crokes were under severe pressure from a very well orgsanised Rathmore team, and were it not for outstanding defending from our backline in particular Annie Potts, Maggie Horan and the outstanding Kayleigh Cronin the end result could have been different . However again this team showed tremendous resolve and stepped up another gear. Olivia Dawson and Sheodhna O Donoghue scored 1 02 each to capture the u 13 County Championship. This was a fabulous team performance where all the girls played their hearts out. Leah O Shea accepted the cup on behalf of her team and paid particular tribute to Paula and Catherine for all their efforts during the year. They have now captured the U12 and U13 county championship which bodes well for the future of ladies football within the club Team. U13 County Championship Semi Final Dr Crokes 3 -13 Milltown/ Castlemaine 2- 03. Played at Lewis Rd on Sunday the U13 girls have qualified for the county final with a 13pt win over a strong Milltown /Castlemaine team. Our opponents got off to a flier with a goal after 3mins, however, as always with this team they hit back straight away and scored 2 04 in a ten minute spell with goals from Michaela Bruton and Sheodhna O Donoghue following some terrific work by the impressive Kayleigh Cronin who scored three points to leave the half time score 2- 06 to 1-01 in favour of the home side. We started the second half in fine style with points from Maggie Horan, Kayleigh Cronin and Sheodhna O Donoghue, however the away side were not finished and put 1-02 on the board before Amy O Shea played her part with a magnificient individual goal followed by a point to close out the game and another county final looms for these up and coming players. FINAL South Kerry 1 - 08 Dr. Crokes 0 - 10, unfortunately we were again on the losing end by the minimum margin in this game. A game that had many talking points none more so than the penalty calls beginning with a penalty that might not have been given, but was, and ending with a penalty that might have been given, but wasn't. Our fellows tried their heart out and should be proud of this years performances, the management who did a magnificent job ably abetted by the executive. Special thanks to all our supporters for their loyal following and the colour they brought to the occasion. To our sponsors your support is greatly appreciated. There is still plenty of football to be played O`Donoghue Cup and the Co. League final and one have no doubt that in the true Dr. Crokes tradition the players will dust themselves down and return to winning ways.
