29/10/08 O`DONOGHUE CUP Dr. Crokes 3-13 Fossa 0-02. We had a comfortable q/final victory over Fossa on Saturday last. Played in wretched conditions we were slow to get moving in the opening half and led at the break 1-03 to 0-00. On the resumption, our opponents took the early initiative and kicked the opening two scores but once we composed ourselves, we proceeded to kick 2-10 without reply. We would like to wish Brian McMahon a speedy recovery from an ankle injury sustained in the warm up. S/f v Scartaglin fixed for Sunday November 16th Sem James Barry, P.J. Dr. Crokes v Fossa Saturday October 25 4pm @ Fossa COISTE NA OG U16 County Champions 3-08 Lispole 1-06 Played on Sunday 19th October at Healy Park Tralee, this was a day to remember for the boys in Black and Amber Crokes got stuck in from the start and battled for every 50/50 ball – most of which they won. Playing into a strong wind in the first half, our lads made the most of any opportunities that came their way. Both teams traded scores at the start and Crokes led by 0-2 to 0-1 when Lispole struck for their goal. Crokes response was swift and within minutes a long ball in from Robert Watson finished up in the net with a possible deflection from corner forward Anthony Cronin. Lispole responded with a number of long range points aided by the increasingly strong wind. However the Crokes boys would not let them out of sight. Brian O’ Shea had 0-3 in the first half which kept Crokes in touch. Half time score - Dr. Crokes 1 – 3 Lispole 1-4 If the effort in the first half was good, then it was outstanding in the second half ! The Crokes attack made it very difficult for the Lispole defence and were rewarded with a number of frees which were converted by Brian O’ Shea. Crokes defence was superb – every player took responsibility for closing down their opponent who in many cases were much bigger physically than the Crokes lads. Crokes drove on aided by the great defending and the strong wind. Mid way through the second half the Crokes boys did what they do best – score goals ! The first goal came from a great run by Conor Magill who laid the ball off to Brian O’ Shea and Brian finished as he does with style. A few minutes later Conor Magill was on the move again and this time he did the business himself ! With ten minutes remaining Crokes were in the driving seat and Lispole, to their credit, battled on. For the remaining minutes Lispole sent wave after wave of attack forward. This was the time for the Crokes defence to really put on a display. They showed a remarkable desire and hunger to keep the Lispole lads out and we were treated to some dazzling blocks and saves from our Goalie Ryan Patten and his defence. There was no way they were letting this title get away from them. When the final whistle blew Crokes were ahead by 8 points having conceded only two points in the second half and having scored 2-5 themselves. On the day, our keeper was outstanding, our six backs were awesome, Chris Brady and Robert Watson never stopped all through the game, our forwards worked as hard in defence as in attack and Brian O’ Shea had his best game all year with a remarkable tally of 1-7 Our subs who came on fought just as hard and those who didn’t play have made their contribution at other times this year. It was a great day for these boys , for their mentors and for all those who came to support them. It was particularly satisfying for our club to see such a display of skill and determination and in particular, to see such discipline throughout the game. Team Ryan Patten, Mark Egan, Gordon Buckley, Iggy Curtin, Cillian Fitzgerald, Chris Lawlor, Michael Beckett, Chris Brady, Robert Watson (1-0), Conor Fitzgerald, Conor Magill (1-0), Cian O’ Neill (0-1), Neily McEntaggart, Brian O’ Shea, (1-07) Anthony Cronin. Subs: Derek Maye (for Anthony Cronin), Senan Lavery (for Neily McEntaggart), Brian Murphy (for Cillian Fitzgerald), Daniel Healy, Dean Daly, David McSweeney, Cian McDermott, Dylan O’ Neill Selectors: Denis Coleman, Harry O’ Neill, Joe Maye, Enda Ward and Der Brosnan U-10 Munster Hurling Blitz. The Club Hosted another Hurling Blitz last Saturday 18th October. This time it was the turn of the U-10’s held in conjunction with the Munster Council promoting the “Fun Do” initiative. This is a special series of games with clubs from all over Munster and we were partnered with Kanturk, Newcastlewest & Mitchelstown. Unfortunately Mitchelstown were unable to travel this time but both Kanturk and Newcastlewest came in great numbers so each team entered 2 teams of 9-a-side and each team played 5 games of 15 minutes duration. Again, this was a very good work-out for our young hurlers and many of them went home very tired especially some having played a football game v Spa before this blitz on Saturday morning. We had 26 players in all at this age group and it was great to be able to give everyone a taste of the action. These games are not about winning and the emphasis is all about learning and having fun. All participants were presented with a t-shirt with a Munster crest and also a “fun-do” sliotar. We want to thank all the players both girls and boys for supporting this event and also a special thanks to all the parents for their attendance. Next week our U-8’s will travel to Kenmare to participate in a fun mini-blitz. Bus leaves Crokes at 10.00 sharp and we should be back at 1.30 pm. This is the last hurling session of the year so we hope to finish off the year with a fun-day. During the winter months, we will organise a number of hurling evenings for players and their families. These evenings will include hurling videos and presentations on different aspects of hurling by cork county players, Ben O’Connor and Ronan Curran, National Director of Hurling, Paudie Butler and others. It will also provide an opportunity for hurlers and their families to socialize and meet the mentors and trainers. EAST KERRY U12 FINAL Dr. Crokes 2-03 Spa 2-10 played in Fossa on Sunday last we were defeated by a stronger Spa side in this decider who we congratulate on their victory. We played well in the opening half but had no answer to our opponents superiority in the second period. We would like to put on record the input of all the players, mentors and parents which gave us such an enjoyable year and we will return next season hopefully stronger. LOTTO there was no winner of the Jackpot of €4,200 on Sunday October 19 numbers drawn were 1,14,22,24. Seven patrons matched 3 numbers each receiving €75. Jackpot on Monday October 27 is €4,500. ALL STARS Congratulations to Colm Cooper on being selected on the 2008 All Stars. This is the fifth occasion that Com has been honoured a magnificent achievement. PAT O`SHEA We would like to wish Pat every success in the future following his resignation as Kerry Manager. His two year stint as Kerry Manager was a success. No doubt we will see Pat in a more active role in the Club in the not too distant future. Following the disappointment of our exit from the Co. Championship the previous Sunday this was potentially a tricky outing and it is to the credit of the players who dusted themselves down and were ready for the fray. Forced to line out without the injured Eoin Brosnan & Keith McMahon who we wish a speedy recovery a number of our panel were making their O’Donoghue Cup debuts and were not found wanting. Colm Cooper was yet again the Star finishing with a personal tally of 1-08. Luke Quinn and Michael Moloney picked up knocks and we wish them a speedy recovery. COISTE NA OG U12 East Kerry league Dr. Crokes 6-18 Legion 1-08 On Monday October 6th we entertained our neighbours in what was arguably the first ever u12 game played under lights in East Kerry. In this eagerly awaited tie we started well and excelled in all areas and kicked some wonderful scores to lead at half time 4-06 to 0-04. on the resumption we continued much of the same and we were afforded the luxury of being able to use the full panel and all were able for the task. Dominant in all sectors, our defenders were tight, midfielders towering, and forwards scoring at will. Our goalkeeper while having little to do responded magnificently on the few occasions he was called upon. We ran out comfortable winners in a very sporting game and both sets of players are to be congratulated in their approach and the playing of the game. This victory sees us top the group and we now play Spa in the final on Sunday next October 19 at 12noon in Fossa. This should prove to be a cracker and best wishes to all. Dr. Crokes U-11 Hurlers continued their progress on Saturday 4th Oct. last winning the first ever hurling blitz hosted by Laune Rangers GAA Club in Killorglin. Dr. Crokes were delighted to have been invited to the 7-a-side event and congratulate Laune Rangers GAA for this initiative in promoting hurling and Camogie in South Kerry. Dr. Crokes played 5 games in total and were the only club to win all their games. The competition was challenging all through and there was very little between all the participating teams. Dr. Crokes beat Crotta 1 & 2, Kilmoyley, Ardfert and Kilgarvan on their way to a victory and great credit is due to the entire panel of players: Ger Murphy was again very reliable in goals, Michael Owen Buckley & Daniel O’Brien excellent in defence, Mark O’Shea and Jack Lenihan formed a very skilful and hard working mid-field partnership while up front Billy Courtney and Oscar O’Connor did what good forwards do – score. Jack Murphy and Mark Hartnett also contributed greatly to this magnificent success. Alan O’Doherty, Conor Murphy and Conor Quirke were also on the panel and gained valuable experience from this event. Again well done – it was a pity that one of our star players Gavin White missed the blitz due to illness but no doubt, he will be back in action again soon. U-13 Hurling blitz Our U13 hurlers participated in this 7 a side blitz and for many of the players it was their first hurling game in a few months. We played against a fancied Kenmare/Kilgarvan team and put a good show before eventually tiring and losing by two goals. In our second game against Kilmoyley, our lads showed their true colours, fought right to the end .This was a good battle, and had some good hurling exchanges. Miceal Burns in goals was decisive and hardworking and Aaron Murphy in the backs was first to every ball. He was able assisted by Connor McSharry. John Ivory in midfield was the engine of the team and drove on tirelessly and he had willing accomplices in Caolan O’Donoghue, Denis Fleming and Ivan Hurley. This game was in the balance right up to the end and with Mark O’Shea and Chris Doncel tormenting the opposition defence we hope that the victory would be ours. Despite our heroic efforts and a defiant goal by John Ivory, we lost by a point and failed to make the final . All in all it was a good workout for the lads in advance of the Dr Crokes U13 blitz which will be held on October 11th.
GIRLS The under 14 girls team played Spa in the Division 2 plate final last LOTTO there was no winner of the Jackpot of €3,900 on Sunday October 12 numbers drawn were 1,7,15,24. PARTYNITE at the racecourse hosted by Dr. Crokes, Legion & Spa GAA clubs again proved to be a mega night for our U15-17 year olds on the 3 October. The night as in previous occasions ran off without a hitch and all in attendance of 400 well behaved. As long as the boys and girls continue to enjoy all three clubs will have no hesitation bringing the Roadshow back to town. We thank our members on the steering committee Anne Byrnes, Joe Maye, Seamie O`Doherty, along with the members of the other clubs, Killarney Racecourse, Order of Malta and Killarney Gardai. We urge all members and fans to come along and support. COISTE NA OG U 12 County hurling C/Ship blitz hosted by Dr Crokes on Sept 27th, 2008. The 2008 county U12 hurling championship was played as a one-day blitz and hosted by Dr Crokes. We were blessed with a warm sunny day and the hurling was top quality. Teams from Abbeydorney, Ballyheigue, Lixnaw, Kilmoyley, Kenmare/Kilgarvan and Dr Crokes all played their part in making this a very successful event. Each team played four games with the final being played between the top two teams. Dr Crokes fielding a young, but experienced side gave a very good account of themselves despite having just recently returned to hurling after their summer break. We were also missing two of our stalwarts, however all those present made use of the opportunity to impress their mentors with their skills. Our first game against Lixnaw was a tight affair with some good hurling from both sides. We were looking good for a victory but for a few points from outfield and in the end we lost by two points. Against Kilmoyley, our lads showed that the pre-summer break touches were returning and the quality of the hurling was very good from both sides. Leading by two points with as many minutes remaining, our brave goalkeeper and defence were finally beaten for a killer goal. Kenmare/Kilgarvan provided the opposition for the third match and Again the scores were well taken by both sides with some nice points. Ger Murphy was a revelation in our goals and provided a defiant last line of defence. This game was won by KK on the basis of their long range points. The final game was against Abbeydorney and our "best wine" was kept until last. A great team display and some good scores from Jack Lenihan and Miceal Burns were rounded off by a lovely Chris Doncel goal to earn us a well deserved draw. This blitz provides our U12 panel with lots of experience and encouragement. It is great to see our lads holding their own in the company of some of the strongest hurling clubs in the county. Players like Ger Murphy, Gavin White, Daniel O'Brien, Shane Lyne, Jack Lenihan, Miceal Burns and young Mark O'Shea were prominent , however the team effort of all the players was most encouraging for the future .Well done. Panel :- G Murphy,S Lyne,C McSharry,J Murphy,M O'Shea, D O'Brien,G White,M Burns,J Lenihan,M O'Shea,B Courtney, C Doncel,D Fleming,J O'Sullivan,O O'Connor,Ml O Buckley,L McCarthy,J McAuliffe,L Howe,M Hartnett. U12 EAST KERRY we overcame the challenge of Spa on Sunday last, we now meet Legion on Monday October 6th. U13 GIRLS Having overcome Milltown in the first round of this competition, the girls U-13 football team played Firies at home last Thursday evening. The team got a fantastic start with two early goals from Olivia Dawson, followed closely by points from Jessica Edwards and Kayleigh Cronin. The backs, led by Captain Samantha Marcos, worked tirelessly on the night and were unfortunate to concede two goals before half time. The second half again saw some outstanding teamwork, against a very capable Firies team. Annie Potts, Sorcha Hickey and Tara O' Shea covered great ground from the half back line and as Firies pushed to reduce Crokes' lead, goalkeeper Katie Cronin made some fantastic close range saves. Further scores from Sarah Potts, Alannah Grealey and Olivia Dawson and with Clara Kate Doherty, Claire Buckley and Maggie Horan keeping the Firies full forward line scoreless, Crokes held out for a superb victory. Overall, a fantastic team performance by all the girls involved. We now look forward to the semi-final as we await confirmation of whom we will be playing. Final score Crokes 6-10: Firies 3-8 LOTTO there was no winner of the Jackpot of €3,000 in the Lotto draw on September 23 numbers drawn were 9,13,15,24. four patrons matched 3 numbers each receiving €125.
