27/09/09 Hurling: Dr Crokes hurlers produced one of their best performances this year in the South Kerry Senior Hurling Final where they were piped at the post by the newly crowned County Intermediate Champions Kilgarvan on a score line of 2-12 to 2-11. The hurling was of a very high standard and played in a sporting manner, which is why the sending off of corner back Cian O Toole early in the first half was harsh as both players were niggling each other. While this incident was a major blow Crokes re grouped and finished the half stronger, trailing by 1-8 to 0-8. It was another decision (or lack of) that proved too costly for Crokes as Kilargarvan goaled when the side were evenly balanced as it was clearly a throw ball that set up their goal. Crokes upped the ante and while they lost Brian Darcy to a badly twisted ankle they put tremendous pressure on the Killgarvan goalmouth which resulted in 2 goals in quick succession. Unfortunately the final whistle came too soon for a gallant Crokes side. It was heartening for John Lenihan and his team to finish the season is such an upbeat manner and augurs well for next year. On an evening where all Crokes players played well it is unfair to mark out any individual. Goalkeeper John Cagney was always in control. Cian O Toole (until sending off), Gary Landers and Shane Kavanagh (who improves with every game) played very solidly in the full back line. Kevin Landers, Tom Murphy and Barry O Grady who scored 3 great points from frees were hurled with skill and passion. Our midfield pairing of Keith Curtin and Seanie Morris were always in the thick of things and gave as good as they got. Fergal Clarke had an excellent first half and eventually made way from Pa Morrisey to don the Crokes shirt for the last time before he returns to Cork. Captain Brian Darcy hurled to usual high standards and was improving before twisting his ankle. New recruit John Bergin showed just why he will be a big asset to Crokes in the coming years. Inside this trio Patrick Landers had his best game of the season allying his great stick work with strength and commitment. The evergreen and great clubman Tim Hourigan played well at corner forward and them at wing back when moved there early on. Young Mike o Keeffe from Glenflesk also played his best game of the season and belied his tender years with a gutsy and skilful display. Team and Scorers John Cagney, Cian O Toole, Gary Landers, Shane Kavanagh, Kevin Landers, Tom Murphy, Barry O Grady (0-3), Keith Curtin, Seanie Morris (0-1), John Bergin (0-1), Brian Darcy(0-3), Fergal Clarke (1-0), Mike O Keeffe(0-1), Patrick Landers (1-2 ), Tim Hourigan. Well done to Colm Cooper, Eoin Brosnan & Kieran Cremin on winning their second Celtic Cross and 19year old Kieran on winning his first. A special word of praise for Eoin Brosnan who when introduced at the break showed his resilience, athleticism and mental strength to play a stormer after the injustice of the original team selection. Eoin you will always be a hero in the Dr. Crokes club. Unfortunately the Kerry Minors did not hold out but lived to fight another day and gives Michael Moloney, Johnnie Buckley, Jamie Doolan, and Alan Kelly along with selector Vince Cooper a second chance for glory. Many thanks to those parents under the coordination of Ms. Breda Neeson without whose co-operation it would not have been possible also to Mossy Foley and Richie Kelly for all their technical support which contributed greatly to the overall success. 13/09/06 We got back on winning ways on Friday last in the co. league with an away win over table toppers K. O`Rahillys on a score line of 3-05 to 0-09. No doubt about it this was a tough uncompromising game where no quarter was asked for or given. It was a joy to see so many of our players step up to the plate after their recent losses and this augurs well for the rest of the season where a lot of football is still to be played. We lined out minus the services of Colm Cooper, Kieran Cremin and Eoin Brosnan, and lost our talisman Kieran O`Leary in the early stages with a leg injury(not as serious as the early prognosis) and opened up a 2-3 to 0-2 lead John O’Sullivan and Bryan McMahon the goal scorers. O’Rahilly’s were dependent on Declan Quill for the bulk of their scoring returns, and points from Quill and Mark O’Sullivan brought the Blues back into contention. when Andrew Kennelly scored the third goal to put us 3-3 to 0-6 clear we never looked back. Best for Dr. Crokes on the night were James Cahillane, Luke Quinn, Bryan MacMahon, Brian Looney, Andrew Kenneally, Johnny O`Sullivan. n.b. what criteria is used by GAC to postpone games in this division. We are one of 3 clubs who have completed our full complement of fixtures but when we requested a postponement we were point blankly refused but on checking other games were not played. this situation is not acceptable. Team; 1 Andrew O’Connell, 2 Shane Doolan (0-1, 0-1f), 3 Luke Quinn,4 Keith McMahon, 5 Batty Moriarty,6 James Cahillane,7 John Payne 0-1,8 Kieran Brosnan, 9 Brian McMahon 1-0, 10 Brian Looney 0-3 (0-2 frees),11 Nicholas Murphy, 12 James Fleming,13 Kieran O’Leary,14 Johnny O’Sullivan (1-0), 15 Andrew Kennelly (1-0). Sub: Ambrose O’Donovan for K O’Leary (inj). O`Sullivan Cup: we were beaten comphrensively by a well prepared and totally committed Listry side in the q/final of this competition on Tues.last. It was a poor overall performance by us and one where we definitely left our shooting boots at home. Coiste na Og: U12 B East Kerry Div.3 Dr. Crokes played Gneeveguilla on Wednesday night in the East Kerry Div.3 U12. We started very brightly and had a dead cert goal not given, but it was the visitors who had the luck and 2 quick goals gave them a lead at half time. In the second half we played much better and got some lovely scores, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit of the first half. There was little rest for the team, on Friday night we were on the road again. Currow were the opposition. Again we started ok but Currow got the vital goals that made life difficult for us and in the end Currow ran out the winners. This bunch of U12 B players never gave up and played hard right to the final whistle. Great credit is due to all our players for never giving up on either of their games. Sat. morning sessions beginning at 10.30a.m. for U6`s 8`s 10`s boys and girls have resumed and will continue for the foreseeable future. Learn the skills of football and hurling in a safe, fun and friendly environment from qualified coaches. Mini Leagues, fun games, challenge games with other local teams will be part of the package. Best wishes: To the Kerry Senior & Minor Teams in Sundays Matches. It is a great honour and shows the strength of our Club to have so many players involved in both teams in this the showpiece day for Gaelic Football. Here’s hoping that Eoin Brosnan, Colm Cooper, Kieran Cremin Kieran O’Leary, Johnny Buckley, Jamie Doolan, Alan Kelly Michael Moloney, Minor Selector Vince Cooper, Masseur Harry O’Neill team attendant Niall O’Callaghan along with our Club Chairman and Co. Congratulations to Tim Brosnan who celebrated his 50th birthday with a surprise party on Sat. Night. 6/09/06 Co.League Div. 1: Gneevegulia 0-12 Dr. Crokes 1-07. Played in Gneevegulia on Sat. last we lost another brace of points to the home side in an exciting Div. 1 clash. Short a large number of regulars due to a variety of reasons this was a game we were always chasing after Gneevegulia ran into a 5 point lead in the early stages. While we had plenty of possession and amble opportunities taking the wrong option and alarming poor finishing on numerous occasions left us with the paltry total at the break of 1-01. the goal finished to the net by Nicholas Murphy, and Brian Looney kicking a 45. leaving us trailing by 0-08 to 1-01. on the resumption we took the game to our opponents and points by Kieran Brosnan, Brian Looney, and substitute Michael O`Donoghue narrowed the gap to two, Gneevegulia extended their lead again to 5points with some excellent shooting 0-12 to 1-04 but on another wave of attack we again managed to narrow the gap with points from James Fleming, Shane Doolan, and Nicholas Murphy. We bombarded the Gneevegulia goal in the final moments but some stout defending we were unable to breach their last line of defense. Best for Dr. Crokes were Luke Quinn James Cahillane, and John Payne in defense, Ambrose O`Donovan toiled manfully at midfield while in the forwards Nicholas Murphy and Brian Looney tried hardest. Team: Kieran Cremin, Shane Doolan,(0-01) Luke Quinn, Keith McMahon, Batty Moriarty, James Cahillane, John Payne, Ambrose O`Donovan, Kieran Brosnan,(0-01) Johnny O`Sullivan, Nicholas Murphy,(1-01) James Fleming(0-01), Kevin Smyth Andrew Kenneally Brian Looney 0-02. Subs: Michael O`Donoghue (0-01), Ian Howard. Coiste na Og: A sincere thank you to East Kerry Board on the recent presentation of gear for Juveniles. Hurling: played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Tues. last we were completely overwhelmed by a much fitter and focused Kilgarvan side in the s/final of the Intermediate Championship. Senior Ladies .Following a tremendous victory in the championship we faced Corca Dhuibhne in the next round this was played in Lewis road last Monday evening and it turned out to be a fantastic game. The game opened with some wonderful scores from Laura Buckley, Amanda Brosnan, Niamh Sheehan after some good support from Muirassa Galway, Orla Kavanagh, and Caoimhe Willis, we had hard luck for a few goals with the post being tested on a number of times. However some opportune scores by Corca Dhuibhne left us down by 5 points at half time. On resumption of the game we conceded a goal and a point to leave us 9 points down. That was when the girls got down to work and began a comeback that saw us kick 8 unanswered points and again sent 3 balls skimming wide. The game eventually finished with a 2 point victory for the opposition and we were left to rue the missed chances. The final score was Corca Dhuibhne 2 - 9 Dr. Crokes 0-13. However we now have the semi- final of the intermediate championship against Laune Rangers to play so it may yet be an exciting finish to our season. U16 Ladies. Our U16 Ladies gave one of the best displays of ladies football was on show last Wednesday night when this young team with quite a few of the U14 County Champions playing showed that the future is bright following the victory over Listowel Emmetts, The teamwork that yielded a score of 4-16 was worth watching, and indeed as solid a display that this team has put together so far this year. Some super individual scores by Lisa Courtney,Edel Carroll, and Edel Cronin, werethe result of wonderful build up play by Blaithen Cronin,Reanne O Shea, Megan Buckley,Rebbeca Galvin and Fiona Sheehan. The ever running Caoimhe Willis and the superb display of the backs Niamh O Shea, Kerry Beckett,Fiona Brady,Mags O Connor, Laura Moloney, Karina O Leary, with Megan Kiel, Katie Looney, Aileen Hurley and the brilliant goalkeeping of Danielle O Brien, made sure this game was never going to be lost. well done girls Lotto:The Jackpot of €6,00 on Sun.
