U-12 Co. Hurling Championship Dr. Crokes 6-08 Ballyduff 3-05 Dr. Crokes U-12 Hurlers had a great win over Ballyduff in the Co. Championship last Sunday morning 27th September 2009. In a magnificent pitch, at St. Pat’s Blennerville, Dr. Crokes young hurlers were really up for this match. While there were many stars all over the field, this was surely their best team performance of the year and they now qualify for a home game V Causeway, another stronghold of North Kerry Hurling in the ¼ Final of the Co. Championship next weekend. The Dr. Crokes Club have been promoting the Juvenile Hurling Board to allow soloing in juvenile games and as an experiment full rules now apply to this Championship. Dr. Crokes certainly appeared to benefit from this new freedom and their hurling was quick and decisive. The defence was very solid with Gavin White, Michael Owen Buckley, Mark O’Shea, Daniel O’Brien clearing great ball all through, the mid-field pairing of Jack Lenihan and Dean Farrell worked very well together, while up front Billy Courtney, Oscar O’Connor, Jason Brosnan, Paul Clarke, Ciaran Kennedy put in a great effort. Others to impress were Michael Lenihan in goal, Anthony Murphy, Cian Heffernan, Jack Murphy, Aodhan de Brun, James McAuliffe and Adrian Murphy. Scorers - Jack Lenihan 2-5, Ciaran Kennedy 2-0, Billy Courtney 1-1, Oscar O’Connor 1-1 and Daniel O’Brien 0-1. Ballyduff were very magnanimous in defeat and paid the team huge compliments after the very sporting game. Crotta O’Neills Ground Hurling Tournament Dr. Crokes U-12 Hurlers participated in this Ground Hurling Tournament for the very first time. This is an excellent run tournament which promotes ground hurling. Great credit goes to the Crotta Club and especially to Sonny Egan for his continuous efforts in promoting the game. Dr. Crokes played 3 games V Crotta, Ardfert & Ballyheigue but unfortunately we were beaten by small margins in all 3 games. However, winning is not everything and we certainly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot. Any day you learn, is a day well spent! The trip was well worth while and we intend going back again next year

Their opponents Moycarkey/Borris, contained four of the Tipperary senior side who played against Kerry in this year’s Munster senior championship semi-final. Maeve Corcoran, Kelly Hackett, Maeve Hackett and Catriona Walsh also played significant roles in this game but it was the Killarney girls who prevailed thanks to a very solid second half performance. Dr Crokes raced into an early lead thanks to an opening goal from a penalty by senior inter county player Cassandra Buckley and some good points by the returning Amanda Brosnan, Laura Buckley and Rheanne O’Shea and the inspirational Mairead Finnegan. A late three goal first half salvo by the Tipperary girls however left the half time score of 3-4 to 1-9 in favour of the Premier champs. Dr Crokes however upped the ante in the second half and were inspired by 2 goal heroine Joanne Spillane who moved up to the attack. Amanda Brosnan fielded well on the edge of the square and Finnegan, Buckley, Rheanne O’Shea and 14 year old substitute Jessica Edwards all combined well to point Dr Crokes to victory. The Killarney club now face a difficult assignment against Clare Intermediate champions Liscannor. In the other semi-final Clonakilty face Dunngarvan also on the weekend of October 3rd/4th. Liscannor have a number of inter county senior players like Olivia Lucas, Marie Considine and Carmel Considine but the Crokes ladies who are jointly managed by Catherine Keogh and James Fleming should be confident that they are good enough to advance to the Munster Final. Dr Crokes: Marie Cahillane, Karina O’Leary, Katie Gleeson, Edel O’Carroll, Joanne Spillane (2-1), Caoimhe Willis, Emma Galvin, Lyn Jones, Cassandra Buckley (1-0), Mags Cronin (0-1), Mairead Finnegan (0-4), Laura Buckley (0-2), Rheanne O’Shea (0-4), Amanda Brosnan (0-2), Maura O’Callaghan (1-1) Subs: Edel Cronin, Kerry Beckett, Jessica Edwards, Rebecca Galvin, Chloe Doherty, Aisling Stack, Amy Donovan COISTE NA OG Our u 8/9 Hurlers travelled to Newtownshandrum on Saturday to participate in a very prestigious Munster Blitz. Six teams representing the Munster Counties partook. Clonoulty/Rossmore (Tipperary), Six Mile Bridge (Clare), Abbeyside (Waterford), Munroe/Boher( Limerick, the host club and ourselves. The emphasis here was on learning and the host club have always gone out of their way that this event is not about winning but rather a fun event that the kids will develop and learn from experience. Well, the kids certainly enjoyed the experience to play against teams from other counties and we were delighted with the performance of each and everyone of our panel of 19 players. In all we played 4 games and while they were even we came out on top in three beating Abbeside, Murroe/Boher, and Six Mile Bridge and drawing with the host club in a great contest. We wish to thank the Newtonshandrum Club again for this opportunity and also the parents who travelled in huge numbers. Most of all, well done to all the players who represented the Club and County with distinction. KEEP IT UP. They were presented with medals by Cork Hurlers Cathal Naughton and Jamie Coughlan. CO. LEAGUE resumes this weekend with an away fixture with Tarbert on Saturday. Please check time of throw-in. All members will be contacted over the coming days with tickets and we are confident you will participate. AFTERNOON SHOW On Friday last Four members of Dr. Crokes were invited on to the RTE 1 Afternoon Show for some light hearted banter prior to the All Ireland Final. John (Yogi) Keogh, Sheila Dickson, Brian O’Callaghan, and Niall (Botty) O’Callaghan were our chosen representatives and they represented the club admirably, although the jury is still out on Yogi’s knowledge of Crokes history. You will be notified of the verdict???. CONGRATULATIONS to Colm Cooper and the Kerry team on yet another All Ireland victory. This is Colm`s fourth Celtic Cross a tremendous achievement in the modern age. SYMPATHY to the Hussey family on the death of Mary. 16/09/09 O`SULLIVAN CUP Dr. Crokes 1-08 Glenflesk 1-07 we qualified for the O`Sullivan Cup final with a narrow 1 point victory over Glenflesk on Sunday last. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Keith O`Leary who suffered a nasty hand injury. This young talented player has suffered more than a fair share of injuries in the last while. East Kerry Minor League Final Kilcummin 3-14 Dr. Crokes 0-7. We started very well in this game and mid-way through the first half, we were just one point behind, four points to three. A few missed opportunities cost us dearly and we trailed at half-time by nine points to five. As the score suggests, Kilcummin were by far the better team in the second half and ran out convincing winners. James Barry, Conor O' Neill, Kieran Ward, Killian Fitzgerald and Sean Coppinger were our best performers On the day, things just did not go right for us but we still have the East Kerry Championship to look forward to. COISTE NA OG U12 Girls EK League Dr Crokes 3- 07 Spa 2-07 Our U12 girls continued to make good progress with a 3 point win over the EK favourites Spa. It was once again a magnificent team performance from the backs through to the forwards. We lead at half time 3-04 to 2-03 following some wonderful score taking; Seodhna O Donoghue with (2-02), Siobhan Burns (1-01) and Christine Cooper (0-01) secured for us a comfortable 4-point half time lead. The second half was a much tighter affair where scores were at a premium. There was some terrific blocking down by the defence ably assisted by the midfielders and half forwards that limited Spa to just 3 pointed frees. Three points from Annie Potts secured another vital win for this young and enthusiastic bunch of girls. Team and Scorers. Laura O Sullivan, Rachel McGowen, Chrystal Doran, Chloe Bartlett, Deirdre Sheahan, Megan O Callaghan, Lynn O Shea, Annie Potts (0-03), Christine Cooper (0-01) Rebecca O Shea, Olga Ryan, Siobhan Burns (1-01), Seodhna O Donoghue (2-02), Kayleigh Dewhurst, Niamh O Sullivan Roisin O Doherty Rebecca Bruton, Rosha Courtney, Allison Keogh, Elaina Galvin Jessica Galvin. Hurley’s and helmets are now available. 09/09/09 WEB TRANSMISSION Saturday game the first of its kind to be broadcast on the web was a total success when we had 1,117 individual hits. This successful venture was the culmination of weeks of preparation and the realisation of John C O`Shea of Studio 51 productions dream. The feed back we have received has been tremendous coming from all corners of the globe and it was great for many of our diaspora to have another link with home. Dr. Crokes club are deeply indebted to all concerned who helped to make it the success that it was, our IT committee, Supporters Club “ The Clear Air Boys”, Commentators Diarmuid Kelleher and Niall “Botty” O`Callaghan, Editor Jackie O`Mahony, camera Denis O`Leary Jnr. and of course the guru himself John C. CO. LEAGUE DIV. 1 Dr Crokes 2-14 An Gaeltacht 1-9 Dr Crokes virtually secured their place in this years League final with an eight point victory over An Gaeltacht. We pressed the accelerator button in the last 10 minutes and with wonderful goal by Kieran O’Leary ending the game as a contest. We began well with Johnny Buckley and Ambrose O`Donovan dominating the midfield exchanges in the early stages to lead 0-6 to 0-3 after 20 minutes. An Gaeltacht stuck with us however and finished the half stronger thanks to the efforts of Sean Mici and Tomas O Concubhair with Tomas providing a big threat from centre-forward. The home side suffered a blow when Luke Quinn had to go off injured before half-time as the gap closed to just one point at the interval, 0-7 to 0-6 in favour of Crokes, their last point coming courtesy of a superb link up between Eoin Brosnan and Brian Looney, which the latter tapped over. The second-half began the same as the first, Kieran O’Leary with a point straight from the throw-in but Rici Aghas operating in a roving role for the visitors replied instantly as Kerry panellist Ronan O Flatharta at centre-back began to gain more influence on the game. The West Kerry side went in front for the first time thanks to a Sean Mici O Concubhair goal, taking advantage of a defensive error for an easy finish in the 38th minute. Our response was instant; Kieran O’Leary found Andrew Kennelly in space and he nearly burst the netting with a rocket of a shot well to put us ahead . both sides traded points with us holding a slight two point lead but we were made to sweat in the 52nd minute when James Cahillane and Eoin Brosnan combined brilliantly block down what appeared to be a certain goal for O Concubhair and scrambled substitute Eoin Durhaim’s rebound away. Ambrose O’Donovan stretched their lead to three before Kieran O’Leary lobbed the ball over Marc O Mainin in the Gaeltacht goal with a minute of normal time left securing an eight point victory and maintaining Crokes’ unbeaten record in this year’s County League. JUNIOR CO. FINAL Final ------ Austin Stacks 1-9 - Dr Crokes 1-7(Played in Keel on Tuesday 1st September). This was a game we could have won. On paper we looked to have the better players. Austin Stacks did however deserv their win as they seemed to more easily carve out openings for score. We did have at least three goal scoring chances during the game but either finished poorly or had the last pass put astray. Our opponents also did miss chances but in analysing a game you are only concerned with what your team wasted. Our congratulation to the "Rockies" on their victory. The teams exchanged points three times in the first twenty minutes. Our opponents went a point ahead three minutes later. In the next five minutes we had 1-1 without reply, the goal, a great individual effort by TJCronin, followed by a point by Andrew Kenneally. When it looked as if were going to go in a goal in front at half time, Stacks struck for a goal in injury time and level the game at 1-4 each at the interval. There were only four scores in the first twenty minutes of the second half, all points and three of them recorded by Austin Stacks. We reduced the deficit to a point five minutes later but our opponents had points in the 58th and 59th minute to go a goal ahead. We had a chance to equalise in injury time but Gavin Tuckers effort just sailed over the bar. Best in defence were Kieran Ward, James Cahillane and Brian O'Donoghue. We found it hard to exert supremacy at midfield throughout the game. Andrew Kenneally and T.J.Cronin were best in attack. Our thanks to our mentors, John O'Shea, Eamon Fitzgerald and Mike Neeson for the great work they did. It was a pity they were not rewarded with victory in the competition. Team and Scorers; David Neeson; Kieran Ward, James Cahillane, Keith McMahon; David O'Leary(capt), Btian O'Donoghue, Gavin Tucker 0-1; James Jones 0-1, Kieran Brosnan; Shane O'Neill, Andrew Kenneally 0-3, Shane Myers; TJCronin 1-0, David Moloney, Denis Galvin 0-2(0-1free). Subs; David Looney, Ruairi Mangan, Keith O'Leary. LADIES CO. FINAL Dr Crokes 1-17 Sneem/Kenmare 2-05. For 30 minutes this game featured everything that is good about ladies football in Kerry. Two fine sides met toe to toe in battle on Friday evening, in front of large and vocal support with some fine individual displays of talent and endeavour. The setting was also superb. The Dr Cokes back pitch was resplendent under the glare of the floodlights and the silvery full moon. The home side shaded a tight first half and led by a solitary point, 0-7 to 1-3, at the interval and everything seemed set fair for a thrilling second half. Sneem/Kenmare continued the form that saw them defeat pre tournament favourites Scartaglin in the semi-final. Opening points by Laura O’Sullivan and Christina Foley after five minutes handed the visitors an early two-point cushion. The Crokes finally got a footing in the game mainly through the surging runs of Mairead Finnegan who was the game’s star player at centre forward. Finnegan finished the contest with a personal tally of 11 points, 8 of which came from play. Gina Crowley did everything in her power to curb Finnegan but there was no stopping the inter county star who simply stamped her class all over this final. Finnegan contributed six of the seven first half points after full forward Marion O’Callaghan fired over the home side’s opening score. Sneem/Kenmare however entered half time buoyed by a first half goal from the penalty spot by team Captain Michelle O’Sullivan. The second half failed to live up to the opening 30 minutes as Dr Crokes’ management made some key switches and Finnegan continued to shoot point after point. Cassandra Buckley dropped back to centre back and Caoimhe Willis and the brilliant Lyn Jones took over in midfield, while Rheanne O’Shea’s introduction added extra pace to the attack. Four quick Finnegan points in succession followed an opening Lynn Jones point as Crokes surged to a 5-point lead after 40 minutes. Sneem/Kenmare continued to battle bravely and a Laura O’Sullivan goal was some consolation for their efforts but they will few complaints about the overall result. Dr Crokes were worthy winners of the County Junior Final and will now go on to represent Kerry in Munster. With former inter county player Amanda Brosnan available for the Munster campaign the Crokes outfit stand a very good chance of competing well in the competition that is due to commence next month. Dr Crokes: Marie Cahillane, Karina O’Leary, Katie Gleeson, Edel O’Carroll, Joanne Spillane (0-1), Caoimhe Willis, Emma Galvin, Cassandra Buckley (0-1), Lynn Jones (0-2), Megan Buckley, Mairead Finnegan (0-11,3f), Maggie Cronin, Jessica Edwards, Marion O’Callaghan (1-2), Kerrie Beckett Subs used: Rheanne O’Shea, Edel Cronin, Rebecca Galvin, Chole O’Doherty Aisling Stack, Amy O`Donovan. U12 Girls EK League. Legion 1- 03 Dr Crokes 5- 15 Our U12 girls continued their impressive start to the EK league with a win over our near neighbours at Direen. Played in terrible conditions we got off to a wonderful start with a goal from Annie Potts after 5 mins, however, Legion replied with 1.02 to leave us trailing by 2 points after 12 mins. The girls became more composed and hit the legion for 1. 06 in a wonderful 6 min spell with a goal from Christine Cooper and points from Seodhna O Donoghue (3) Siobhan Burns (1) Annie Potts (1) and Niamh O Sullivan (1), further points from Olga Ryan (1) and Siobhan Burns (1) saw us lead at half time by 2-08 to 102. In the second half the girls continued with some wonderful play and notched up a further 3. 07, Annie Potts was outstanding scoring 1 .05 Seodhna O Donoghue 1. 02, and another goal from Kayleigh Dewhurst put the game out of reach of the opposition. The pleasing aspect about this display was every player from number 1 to 19 was outstanding and can look to the future with confidence. Everyone at the club would like to wish Elaina Dawson a speedy recovery from her recent injury. Team and Scorers.Laura O Sullivan. Rosha Courtney. Chloe Bartlett. Lynn O Shea. Rebecca O Shea. JUVENILE HURLING On Saturday last we held a very successful juvenile hurling festival to coincide with the All Ireland final weekend. Blessed with good weather and a great attendance of over sixty juvenile hurlers this event could easily become an annual event. Our festival included a number of skill drills, team building exercises, skill demonstrations and of course plenty of hurling over a three hour period and was followed by some refreshments. It was the ideal way to get all concerned back into the hurling world after our "summer" break. It has been a good year for juvenile hurling in Dr Crokes and this event, in addition to many similar events held so far this year will insure that the skills and thrills of hurling will be enjoyed by many local juveniles into the future. A great day was had by all, well done to all concerned. Training for all ages up to and including U10 continues every Saturday at 9.45 and U12/U14 training continues on Wed & Friday at 5.45 to 7.00pm. Under 10 Mark Cooper 086 1693891 Girls Catherine Keogh 0872827626 Hurling Matt O Neill 087 6836415 Summer Camp: Over 110 kids thoroughly enjoyed this year’s summer camp. The weather was kind and all the kids participated in skills development, fun games and mini blitz’s. Camp co-ordinators Pat O’Shea and Vince Cooper were ably assisted by a willing band of minor and under 16 players from both the male and female side of the Club. This year we introduced workshops geared specifically for goalkeepers. Goalkeepers from all age groups were put through their paces by senior guardian of the net Kieran Cremin. Kieran passed on tricks of the trade he has garnered through his considerable Club and County experience. This innovation proved very successful. Many of the senior players called in throughout the camp and Kieran O’Leary, recently returned from his travels to the US, was on hand to present every participant with an O’Neill’s football. So, the Club expects these balls to be put to a lot of use in practicing the skills of football. Hurling in Muckross House: Over 30 of our under 8 and 9 hurlers gave a great demonstration of the skills of hurling in Muckross Farms last Sunday, when they played Kenmare. A large crowd of locals and visitors from many parts of the world gathered around the pitch to watch this exciting game. Iar Uachtarán and MEP, Seán Kelly, hurling legend Cormac Bonnar, our own inter-county player Seánie O’Shea made up some of the spectators. County Coiste na nÓg Officers Butch Fealy (Hurling Officer) and Paddy White (PRO) was also in attendance along with the respective Chairmen of the South Kerry Hurling Board and the South Kerry Hurling Coiste na nÓg. So the game was played in the presence of very high profile spectators. Football legend Mick Gleeson was on hand to throw the sliotar in to start the game. This was a fast flowing game, where the players from both sides showed off their skills to the delight of spectators. Many of the spectators visiting from abroad were amazed at the strength and bravery of these young players. Their amazement was heightened when a few hurlies were broken in the fury of this ancient game. The setting in middle of Muckross Farms was truly spectacular with a backdrop of the Lakes of Killarney and Tomies Woods and Mountain to the west with Torc Mountain towering in the south. This was a fantastic initiative by Muckross House and Farms and the Club are very grateful to Toddy Doyle for the invitation. Plans are being hatched for further games in the wonderful venue. Festival of Hurling: In conjunction with the Hurling All-Ireland Final this Sunday, Dr Crokes are running a festival of hurling at our Lewis Road venue. This will take place between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm on Saturday 5th September. Hurling skills, drills, fun games and mini leagues will be taking place. Everyone from Killarney and the surrounding areas, with an interest in hurling are invited to come along to see our young players in action. Speak to one of the coaches if you would like to take up hurling in a safe and fun environment under the guidance of qualified coaches. U12 EAST KERRY Our u 12 team started their East Kerry campaign with 2 very different results. Our first game was away to Rathmore and we won 2-17 to 1-06 playing well in all sectors, our second game was the oppsite against a very strong Spa side, we were well beaten 3-17 to 1-07. We were beaten in most sectors. The half time score was 2-10 to no score which tells it own story but at least in the second half they went out and put a brave effort in. No doubt they will learn from this and bounce back strong from it. U12 GIRLS EAST KERRY LEAGUE Dr Crokes 7- 07 Scartaglen 4- 07 Our U 12 Girls got their East Kerry campaign underway with a win over Scartaglen at Lewis Rd on 26/08/09.
