All Ireland Club -- Semi-Final.
Played in Nenagh on Saturday 24th February07.
Dr Crokes 2-9 ------- Moorefield(Kildare) 0-8
In a game which ebbed and flowed for
forty five minutes resulted in a seven point victory for
us in the end because of a storming last quarter
display. While no one could dispute our deserved victory
we were flattered to have won by so much.Moorefield must
be complimented for their sportsmanship and football
ability and no doubt they will be contesting Club finals
in the not too distant future.
Our opponents opened with a point in the 2nd
minute but we were on level terms two minutes later. The
Kildare boys went ahead again in the eight minute but
Colm Cooper's second point made the scores even. Just
before the end of the first quarter Moorefield had a
point but we went ahead for the first time in the 17th
minute with the first of our two goals. This resulted
from a great passing movement between Kieran O'Leary,
Colm Cooper and David Moloney with the latter clinically
finishing from close range. Three points from our
opponents between the 20th and 25th minute drew them
level. Just before half time David Moloney expertly
converted a 45 into the breeze to give us an interval
lead of 1-4 to 0-6.
It took eleven minutes in the second have for a score
to be recorded, a Colm Cooper point to put us two points
in front. The fact that there was only one score during
this period was not because of inaccuracy on the part of
forwards but because defences were on top on both sides.
By the 16th minute our opponents had clawed back our
lead, so it was even Stephen with less than fifteen
minutes to go in normal time.It was all to play for and
a Titanic struggle was in prospect. Surprisingly,
scoring wise the period completely belonged to us. We
scored 1-4 without reply, points from David Moloney,
Kieran O'Leary and Ambrose O'Donovan and a super goal
from Eoin Brosnan that ranked up their with the best he
has scored for Club and County. Kieran O'Leary closed
the scoring with a point just before the end.
A great days work done but so much more to do. We
will be going into the final against Crossmaglen with an
even chance and we know we will even have to step up on
our great semi final display to give us our second All
Ireland Club title.
Our defence performed heroics once again and
behind the six backs Kieran Cremin was faultless,
keeping a clean sheet in all five games in the
competition. Our midfield of Ambrose and Eoin were very
good for three quarters and outstanding in the final
one.Our attack played very well once again as a team and
have now scored nine goals in the campaign. If I mention
Colm Cooper, David Moloney and Kieran O'Leary it is no
reflection on the other forwards but because our inside
line scored 2-8 between them.
