South Kerry
2-8 -------- Dr Crokes 0-7.(Played
in Lewis Road on Tuesday 17th June).
In a Competition that was once the second most
prestigious in the County and that has now become
farcical for Club teams, we went down by seven points to
South Kerry. There are players in several Clubs
including our own who have played in this years Senior
County Championship and are not eligible to play in the
under 21 competition. Colm Cooper was never able to
assist us at this level and players like David Moran and
Tommy Walsh look as if they are heading down the same
road. It seems as if the competition is being geared for
Divisional teams but in a democracy Clubs should be able
to compete and should have all eligible players
available to them when they take the field.
Both sides were short a number of players but
we probably were more affected as we wouldn't have had
the resources to replace at least eight players,
including three who were on the first fifteen of this
years All Ireland under 21 winning team.
We took the lead with a point in the first
minute. Our opponents had a goal in the 5th minute to go
in front. We hit back with a point but four unanswered
points by South Kerry between the 10th and 25th minute
put the visitors 1-5 to 0-2 in front. We finished
strongly with two points without reply to leave us four
points behind at the interval.
The teams exchanged points on two occasions in
the third quarter but a South Kerry goal in the 48th
minute more or less ended the game as a contest. Both
teams had two points each in the remaining minutes to
leave our opponents worthy winners, 2-8 to 0-7.
Our scorers were; Jamie Doolan
0-5(frees), John Bartlett 0-1, Brian Looney 0-1.
Dr Crokes Best Player; Jamie Doolan.
