U14
HURLING BLITZ The Dr Croke’s inter-county U14 hurling
blitz which was held on Saturday Oct 17th
was an outstanding success. With teams from
Newtownshandrum and Kanturk (Cork), Tournafulla
(Limerick) and Dr Crokes representing Kerry the
hurling was of a high standard and an enjoyable day
was had by all.
The
weather was excellent and the condition of the
pitches helped in producing a high standard of hurling
from all sides. All teams played four games and the
various skills of the game were illustrated by all
players. We had some great games with intense, but
sporting rivalry. There were some good goals scored and
some fine points while the art of defending and goal
keeping was also on view. All four teams were evenly
matched , however in the end of the day the overall
honours went to Newtownshandrum.
Their team
was that bit stronger and very skilful and these
factors proved decisive. The other three teams did well
and played their part in a great day’s hurling. This
blitz is part of the learning process for our young
hurlers and the experience will stand to them in the
future. The Dr Crokes Juvenile hurling committee would
like to thank our three visiting clubs, the referees,
Paddy White and Sean Roche and the ladies who provided
the refreshments for the day. Go raibh maith agaibh go

DR. CROKES JUVENILE HURLING - 2009 Autumn Hurling Promotions .
As part of our on-going efforts to promote hurling in the Dr Crokes GAA Club and in the Killarney area generally, the hurling coaches in Dr Crokes GAA club have planned the following events during October.
On Sunday Oct 11th our U10 and U12 hurling teams travelled to the famed Glen Rovers GAA club in Cork where we they played their U10 and U12 teams. This was a very exciting prospect for all our budding hurlers and will be a great experience for them. Following the games we will travelled onto Pairc Ui Chaoimh to see the Cork county senior and intermediate hurling finals, which were both exciting and entertaining. We feel that the exposure to hurling at this level, in addition to earlier trips this year to both Thurles and Croke Park will benefit all our juveniles.
Saturday Oct 17th:- We are hosting our intercounty U 14 Blitz in Lewis Road. This blitz will include teams from Newtownshandrum -Cork, Tournafulla - Limerick, Lattin - Cullen- Tipperary and Dr Crokes. This will be a stern test of our U14’s who reached the county final this year, however we believe that by pitting ourselves against teams from
other Munster counties we will improve our skills and foster hurling friendships that will be of benefit to us in the future. The action on Oct 17th will commence at 1pm. |

JUVENILE HURLING On Saturday last we held a very successful juvenile hurling festival to coincide with the All Ireland final weekend. Blessed with good weather and a great attendance of over sixty juvenile hurlers
this event could easily become an annual event. Our festival included a number of skill drills, team building exercises, skill demonstrations and of course plenty of hurling over a three hour period and was followed by
some refreshments. It was the ideal way to get all concerned back into the hurling world after our "summer" break.
It has been a good year for juvenile hurling in Dr Crokes and this event, in addition to many similar events held so far this year will insure that the skills and thrills of hurling will be enjoyed by many local juveniles into the future.
A great day was had by all, well done to all concerned.
Training for all ages up to and including U10 continues every Saturday at 9.45 and U12/U14 training continues on Wed & Friday at 5.45 to 7.00pm. Many of our U16 hurlers remain involved in the South Kerry team which is progressing well in the Duhallow league.

U15 Co C'Ship qtr
final --- Dr Crokes
V Lixnaw.. Played on
a good evening for
hurling in an
immaculate Dr Crokes
pitch, this game was
full of skill and
honest effort.
Lixnaw showed that
they had taken no
summer break from
their hurling and
their lifting and
striking skills were
very good. On the
Crokes side we had
some very skilful
players but not
enough of them .
However this
rustiness was
compensated for to a
large degree by hard
work and good
effort.
Lixnaw got down to
business quickly and
had five points on
the board before
Aodhan Burns opened
the Crokes account.
While Crokes defence
was under severe
pressure, they held
out strongly and
Alex Goggins was
superd in goals.
While Crokes did
concede points the
opposition were
finding it hard to
get goals. This was
down to Miceál
O'Shea, John Ivory
and Michael Casey in
the full back line.
Further afield Shane
Hanafin David
O'Connor and Aarom
Murphy worked hard.
At half time we were
nine points down.
Some positional
switches at the
break worked and
brought Crokes back
into it. A goal from
Aodhan Burns after a
pass from Ivan
Hurley was followed
by a brace of points
from David O'Connor.
While these scores
restored pride the
game was effectively
over. To their
credit Crokes kept
working away and
inspired by David
O'Connor
who worked
tirelessly and some
good forward work by
Laurence Byrnes who
got a fine goal the
match ended on the
score of 3-20 to
2-05.
Lixnaw were fully
desrving of their
victory, however
this Crokes team has
potential for the
future and with some
more hurling under
their belts and a
full squad available
there will be better
days. Team :- A

It may have taken
125 years, but it
was worth every day
of it. The first
ever Dr Crokes
hurling team ran on
to Croke Park last
Tuesday. Twenty of
our under 12 team
had the opportunity
to play three games
at GAA Headquarters
– and did they take
that opportunity.
We first met old
friends, Lattin
Cullen, with whom we
had a joint training
session earlier in
the year. Plans
were made for
another meeting in
September, before
the current business
was attended to. As
expected, we had a
very sporting game
with Lattin. It was
close, but they put
up a few extra
points by the time
this game was over.
Our second game
brought Patrickswell
from Limerick. This
was a very exciting
game and our lads
were really getting
into their stride.
The Crokes hurlers
had most of the
possession, but did
not always convert
this into scores.
It was point for
point until
Patrickswell grabbed
a late goal. There
was not enough time
to claw this lead
back before the
final whistle.
Finally, we met
another Kerry team,
Abbeydorney. Again,
both teams played
some skilful
hurling. This was
Crokes best game and
scores came more
readily and it was
good to finish off
on a winning note.
This was a hugely
enjoyable day for
everyone, players,
coaches and parents,
alike. There were
many promises to be
back again, when the
stakes would be
higher. But for
now, this experience
of playing in Croke
Park would suffice.
Finally, a number of
mentors were seen
fulfilling lifetime
dreams. Hurlies
were smuggled in and
the senior “kids”
got to score several
goals, points and
the odd wide on this
field of dreams.

Dr Crokes are back
in Croke Park,
again. This time it
is not our senior
footballers, but our
under 12 hurlers.
Our young hurlers
will have the honour
of playing three
games on the
hallowed turf of
Croke Park, meeting
Lattin Cullen,
Patrickswell and
Abbeydorney.
Afterwards they will
take in the Museum
at GAA Headquarters.
This hurling team
were promoted to
Division two this
year and hurled
extremely well to
win through to the
league final against
Ardfert. They were
unlucky in that
game, but were very
satisfied with the
progress they have
made this year. It
is fitting then that
they are the only
hurling team from
South Kerry to be
selected for this
trip of a lifetime.
A lot of work has
gone on into
ensuring that this
event would happen
and our young
hurlers can not wait
to grasp this
opportunity. This
is in keeping with
Club policy to
provide the best
coaching, best games
and best sporting
experience for our
young members.

Long day's journey into night -
indeed it was last Saturday. Crokes
underage players certainly had a
busy day. It all began with
hurling. Over 50 young hurlers at
under 10 and under 8 were out at
9.45am to put in a hard morning's
training in beautiful early morning
sunshine. This group are increasing
in numbers every week and skill
levels are greatly improving. News
broke during the week that Dr.
Crokes under 12 hurlers are the only
Club in South Kerry to be selected
to play on the hallowed turf of
Croke Park in July. This will be an
experience of a lifetime and is
being looked forward to with great
anticipation by players and mentors
alike.
17/06/09
Played in Ballyheigue on a breezy
evening this game pitted Dr Crokes
against Ardfert/St Brendans. This
started very evenly and Crokes
could have drawn first blood on a
few of their early attacks, however
the Ardfert defence was tight and
their keeper was having a blinder.
This did not deter our lads and they
fought bravely. At the other end our
young keeper
was not being outdone and Michael
Lenihan kept our chances alive with
a string a fine saves.
The pressure on our defence soon
showed and by half time we were
trailing by three goals.
In the second half we fought hard
and got a few nice points from Mark
O'Shea and Billy Courtney.
These scores steadied things
and Daniel O'Brien, Jack Lenihan,
Gavin White and Jason Brosnan
winning more
possession the last quarter was
close but the first half goal
concessions had done the damage.
In the end we lost but the second
half performance restored some
pride. Overall it has been a good
league for our lads and the
experience will stand to us in the
championship later in the year.

U12 hurling Dr.
Crokes 3-08 Ardfert
3-02 In the final
game before the semi
finals of the U12
county league, we
hosted a good and
very competitive
Ardfert team. Crokes
started comfortably
and a few early
points from Billy
Courtneyand Jack
Lenihan settled the
team.
The hurling was
quick and tough
and Ardfert
responded with two
points.
The Crokes pressure
paid off and Paul
Clarke and Jack
Lenihan both got
goals to leave the
half time 2-04 to
0-02.
Our defence was
sound and Gavin
White was in
brillant form with
good help from Mark
O'Shea, Anthony
Murphy
and Adrian Murphy.
In the second half
Ardfert really
played well and
their
pressure resulted in
two goals . With ten
minutes to play
there was not too
much between the
sides but a second
Paul Clarke goal and
a further points
from Jack Lenihan
and Billy Courtney
eased Crokes past
the winning post on
the score of 3-08 to
3-02.
We will now await
the semi final draw
to see who our
opponents will be in
next Friday's game.
U14 Co. hurling
final Played in hot
conditions and into
a strong wind in the
first half, Dingle
made good use of the
elements and settled
into a routine. They
scored four points
without reply and
our defence was
under siege. We did
have a few attacks
but they did not
bear any scores.
After a few
positional switches
we settled to the
task in hand and
should have got a
few points before
half - time. However
they did not come
and at the break we
were down by seven
points after being
under severe
pressure in defence.
In the second half
we used the wind
toour advantage and
the scores started
to come. A point
by Laurence
Byrnes was followed
by a Gavin White
pointto leave just
five points in it.
A penalty awarded
to us was superbly
turned over the bar
and Jack Lenihan
added another point.
There was now just
three points in it
and it was tough
going. Dingle stood
firm and added two
further points.
In a dramatic last
five minutes John
Ivory blasted a good
shot just wide and
finally Kevin
O'Sullivan found the
Dingle net.
Final score Dingle
0-09...Dr Crokes
1-04
This was a gallant
effort by our
lads but they ran
out of time. They
can be proud of
their run in this
league and of the
fact that they have
set a high standard
for the future

26/05/09
For the second year running our u
10/11 hurlers did themselves proud
in the Newtownshandrum Hurling Blitz
on Saturday 24th May 2009.
This trip to Newtown was again a
tremendous success with 31 young
hurlers travelling by bus from Dr.
Crokes.
We certainly had the largest panel
there and each and everyone of them
contributed over the course of the 4
games.
In our first game, we overcame
Ballyhea (Cork) in a tough and close
battle with Mark O Shea, Daniel O
Brien dominating midfield and Eodhan
de Brun , Anthony Murphy and Michael
Owen Buckley strong in defence and
Michael Lenihan, James Flavin and
Sean O Neill showing up well in
attack.
This performance set the tone for
the rest of the day and we knew we
would have to keep it up in the
other games.
In our second game, we made many
changes and still kept up the
pressure. We did very well to come
from behind to beat Mungret
(Limerick) by 6 pts with Michael
Lenihan getting a cracker of a goal
in the last second. Other good
performers were Daoire O Hare, Gary
Cronin, Shane Currans, Mark
Fitzgerald, Ruadhan MacCurtain, John
Joseph Buckley, John Hannigan,
Jonathan Mee , Roisin O Hare
Doherty, Lorcan O Hare Doherty.
While the underfoot conditions were
somewhat wet and sticky, it did not
dampen our spirits and will to win
and some of our lads really enjoyed
themselves in the muck.
In our third game, we were well on
top against Charleville (Cork) with
Daniel O Brien getting 1-3 in th
first 5 minutes. Oscar O Connor also
showing up very well.
They were well assisted by Cian O
Hare who took over the goal keeping
duties to great effect, Joseph
Collins, Conor Quirke, Fionn O Hare,
Jamie O Shea ,Dean Griffin in
defence and Tomas Fleming, Mark
Harnett, Conor Murphy, Frank
McQuire, Ruari Mee, Brian Friel in
attack.
So now we had 3 wins out of 3 and
took a well deserved break for
refreshments.
At 2.15 we were back on the pitch to
face the famed Na Pairsaigh of Cork.
After 3 very tough games in mucky
conditions, we were now facing our
strongest opposition. Na Pairsaigh
are one of the best juvenile hurling
clubs in the country and after
drawing with them last year at the
same venue, were out for revenge.
This game was a step too far for us
but we battled away and never gave
up but we were well beaten in the
end.
They were very skilful and much
faster with their wrist work but we
will learn from this experience.
Overall, we were very happy with our
performance in this fun event and
everyone of the panel contributed
over the 4 games.
All members of our panel were
presented with a nice trophy by
Jamie Coughlan (Cork Minor Star )
and John Twomey (Chairman of
Newtownshandrum Juvenile Club)
afterwards for their efforts.
3 wins out of 4 games is not bad
going in fairly hot competition. We
will continue to improve our
standards by competing with these
teams on a regular basis Well done
to all the 31 players and thanks for
great enjoyment all through.
Special thanks to the mentors and
coaches, Matt O Neill, John Lenihan,
Tommy Murphy, Mike O Keefe and Liam
Bergin.
U12 V Dingle Played
on a dry evening
this was a keenly
contested game and
the hurling was
quick and skilful.
Crokes started well
and an early goal by
Jack Lenihan settled
the team. It was end
to end stuff , but
Crokes appeared to
be in control and by
half time we lead by
5 points. In the
second half with the
wind at our backs.
We built on the
first half and a
goal from Paul
Clarke and some
points from Ciaran
Kennedy and Oscar
O'Connor helped
maintain the lead.
In the end it was a
good victory for our
lads and
give us confidence
for the next round.
Daniel O'Brien was
man of the match and
was ably assisted by
Gavin White, Billy
Courtney, Jack
Lenihan and Oscar
O'Connor.
U14 CO. S/FINAL
Crokes/ Laune
Rangers V Kilmoyley.
Played in good
hurling
conditions on a
perfect pitch the
Crokes / Laune
Rangers combination
settled quickly.
They were eager to
make amends for a
loss to the same
opposition three
weeks ago.
Good teamwork
and honest effort is
their hallmark and
this attitude bore
fruit.
Caolan O'Donoghue
got an early goal
and this was
followed by points
from Kevin
O'Sullivan, Aaron
Murphy and Ciaran
Twiss.
The defence was
tight and well
marshalled by
Laurence Byrnes,
John Ivory, Lorcan
Howe and Shane
Hanafin.
The hard work of
Shane Daly and Aaron
Murphy at midfield
paid dividends and a
goal from Gavin
White followed
by a "peach" of a
goal from Aaron
Murphy left the
half time score at
3-04 to 0-02.
Our lads kept up
their intensity and
built on this lead
in the second half.
There was some good
points scored from
Jack Lenihan, Miceal
Burns Kevin
O'Sullivan and the
overall team effort
was pleasing to the
mentors.
A good win on the
score of 4-14 to
0-03 in the finish
maybe
flattering and we
know that a repeat
performance and more
with it will be
needed in the final.

U12 HURLING Played
in good conditions
on a fine May
evening , this was
our first outing in
the county league.
It was a good, fast
and sporting match
Crokes were quick to
settle thanks to an
early goal from Jack
Lenihan. We built on
this and with Gavin
White, Mark O'Shea
and Aodan De Brun in
good form in defence
we were four points
up at the break.
Daniel O'Brien and
Jack Lenihan were in
control in midfield
and the constant
supply of ball to
the forward reaped
rewards. Goals from
Paul Clarke, James

Kennedy put the
result beyond doubt.
There were many fine
performance
throughout the team
with Adrian Murphy,

U14 HURLING Played
in Duagh on a fine
evening this game
showed that the
recent good form is
being maintained
and hopefully this
trend will continue.
We started briskly
and with the breeze
at our backs we took
control of the first
half. An early goal
from Miceal Burns
and points from
Aaron Murphy , Jack
Lenihan and Gavin
White settled the
team. Before half
time Johnny O'Leary
added a goal and up
to that time our
backs contained any
threats.
In the second half
Crotta Duagh tested
our defence and
despite losing Shane
Daly to a niggling
injury we held out
and scored some
points to settle the
game on the score of
2-13 to 2-05.
Our defence was
solid with Tim
Foley, Shane Lyne
and Shane Hanafin to
the fore. Next game

away to Kilmoyley on
04/05/09. This game
was out first
outing of the year
in the county league
and our combined
Crokes/Laune Rangers
team acquitted
themselves well.
With a little luck
we should have won
the game.
Played in a blustery
conditions but in a
very good and
sporting manner we
had the wind at our
backs in the first
half. The hurling
was quick and tough
and our lads were up
for the battle.
Johnny O'Leary and
Kevin O'Sullivan
kept the scoreboard
ticking over with a
goal apiece and
Laurence Byrnes
added a few points.
At the break we lead
by 2-02 to 0-04. It
was backs to the
wall for the second
half and some great
defending by John
Ivory ,Shane Lyne
and John Billou kept
the game alive. We
trailed once by
five points but
after an exchange of
goals by Johnny
O'Leary and Chris
Doncel it was all to
play for in the
final five minutes.
Our staunch defence
finally conceded a
goal and a few
points but Kevin
O'Sullivan replied
with a
great goal. It was
hectic stuff however
in the end we lost
by four points on
the score of 4-09
to 5-02. For our
first outing it was
good
and had a lot of
positives for the
future .

Away to Dingle on
May 8th.
Played in dry but
windy conditions,
this was a good
overall performance
from the
Crokes/Laune Rangers
combination.
Playing with the
wind in the first
half we setteld into
our task and took
advantage of the
elements. Míceal
Burns made an
impressive return to
action and was ably
assisted up front by
Kevin OSullivan and
Jack Lenihan. Our
defence was tight
and
in control while the
forwards made use of
the advantage.Some
good team playing
and accurate
shooting put us in
control at half time
on the score of 2-08
to nil. The second
half onslaught by
our hosts
materialised in the
second half but our
defence remained
mean and in
fact we added some
scores. Some good
switches and a great
work ethic all over
the field paid
dividends and we ran
out winner on the
scoreline of 3-13 to
2-02.
We had leaders all
over the field and
we will hope for a
repeat performance
on Monday 11th
against Crotta /Duagh.

Our U12
hurlers travelled to Kilgarvan to take on the
local team in this U12
game. Played in windy conditions on a fantastic
hurling pitch this game provided a stern test for
our lads. We were missing five of our usual team and
this was a chance for other players to prove their
ability and they were not found wanting.
The
opening 10/15
minutes
were brisk with both defences on top and we were
leading by a point coming up to half time when
finally our defence was breached and we conceded a
goal to be 2 points down at the break.
The
second half started with the concession of an early
goal, but it was after this that our lads really
showed their worth. Every player put in a great
effort and following a goal from young Michael
Lenihan and a few points from his brother Jack we
were set for a titanic last five minutes. Some
heroic defending by Gavin White, Dan O'Brien and
Adrian
Murphy kept the opposition at bay. Cian O'Hare, Alan
O'Doherty and Anthony Murphy offered sound defensive
support to our
keepers, Michael Lenihan and James McAuliffe.
Further outfield Billy Courtney, Paul Clarke, Oscar
O'Connor, Dara O'Hare and Mark Hartnett triedall
they knew to good effect. In the end we lost by
three points but there was a lot of positives to be
taken from this game a s we now prepare for the
semi-final next Friday evening .

TRIP TO
TIPP On Sunday April 19th our U12 and U14 hurlers
and their coaches travelled to Lattin-Cullen in
Tipperary and then onto Thurles for the Tipp V
Limerick NHL game.
This
was a perfect day with great weather and good
experiences for 37 juveniles and 8 of their coaches.
We started with 11am mass in Lattin where we were
acknowledged and applauded by the congregation and
afterwards we had a very interesting training
session with the local juveniles and their coaches.
This session was exciting and fruitful and lots of
new friends were made. We then had an U12 and an U14
match with the local lads and this was followed by
some refreshments provided by our hosts. We then
headed to Thurles for the inter county match which
offered our juveniles a chance to see some quick and
skilfull hurling at the top level. We met a lot of
the players from both teams and got photos and
autographs. All in all it was a great day.
Special
thanks to Sean Browne of Jades Bar for insuring that
a photo of the Dr Crokes U12 team appeared in the
match programme and Sean also supplied a
complimentry programme for all the juveniles. Thanks
to Kieran Crehan and Timmy Hourigan for organising
this with the Lattin-Cullen coaches and a special
thank you to all our juveniles for being so well
behaved all day ...true ambassadors for their club.
Go raibh maith agaibh go leir.
U12 Hurling Dr Crokes U12 hurlers
hosted and participated in the
second blitz on Friday evening which
was ideal for hurling.
Our first games against
Kenmare/Kilgarvan was very
competitive and close with both
sides playing open and fast hurling.
Jack Lenihan lead the way for Crokes
from midfield and he got some fine
points from play and placed balls.
He was ably assisted by Daniel
O'Brien Michael Owen Buckley and
Gavin White.
Despite a great team effort we lost
in the end by one point .
In our second game against Dingle
our lads showed a great work
rate and backed each other up very
well. Thanks to goals by Jack
Lenihan and Oscar O'Connor we were
ahead at the interval.
In the second half it was nip and
tuck and our lads put in a great
effort. Mark O'Shea and Billy
Courtney
were to the fore however in the end
we lost out by a goal.
This team shows great potential and
are improving all the time and the
future is bright for them.

Former Tipperary All Ireland winner
and All star gave a very good
training session to our juvenile
hurlers last Saturday. The session
was very well attended despite the
inclement weather and Nicky did not
disappoint. He gave freely of his
time, experience
and
he really encouraged our hurlers.
This was a great learning experience
for both coaches and players and it
was warmly appreciated by all
present.
Sessions like this will improve the
skill levels and promote enthusiasm
amongst the players and it gives us
all an insight into skills and
speed required for the best field
game in the world. A big thank you
to
Nicky English for his time, it is
really appreciated.

Dr Crokes Juvenile hurling are pleased to
announce that
former Tipperary hurling great and Allstar, Nick
English will give a coaching session to our
juvenile hurlers on Saturday April 11th at 2.00pm
at Lewis Road.
This session is for the U12,U14 and U16 hurlers
and offers them a fantastic chance to gain valauble
tips, insights
and knowledge from one of the game's best players.
This is an opportunity not to be missed and all
hurlers in these age groups are urged to attend.

Dr Crokes GAA Club.
Report on our participation in the Feile na Gael U 14
Hurling blitz.
On last Saturday a combined Dr Crokes and Laune Rangers
team took part in
the
Feile blitz in Tralee. It was good day for hurling which
was enjoyed by all
and this
team promises to open a new era for all those who want
to play hurling and
compete at a high level.
In our first game against Dingle we hurled well and
bravely, but some
rustiness
was evident after the winter layoff. In the end we lost
by a single point.
In our second game we played Abbeydorney and our lads
showed a big
improvement
from the first game. We had many starts but Laurence
Byrnes,Ciaran Twiss,
John Ivory and
Aaron Murphy lead the way. The hurling was quick and
competitive and some
great teamwork was
evident. Laurence Byrnes excelled in midfield and ended
with 2-02 to his
name . Johnny O'Leary got
a goal and Jack Lenihan got a point. We won this game by
3 goals.
In our final game we played Kilmoyley and this was a
very competitive
encounter with
some great passages of play from both sides. Our defence
was sound in all
games
and both of our 'keepers kept clean sheets in all games
- Tim Foley and Ger
Murphy were our goalies.
Jack Lenihan got a fine point to edge us in front but
soon afterwards
matters were level again.
In the final minutes we played a good deal of the game
in their halh but
were unable to get a winning score.
A draw was the final result . All in all it was good
day's work and with a
little luck we could have
won all three games. This team showed good character and
teamwork and we
look forward to the year
ahead with great hope and excitement.
